‘intimate’ 👀👀👀
listening to heartbeat / breathing.
"There was a study done. They played the sound of a mother’s heartbeat in a nursery full of babies. The babies had better weight development, they cried less, and they slept better.”
Jane is gathering Eurus’ hair as she talks, moving it over her shoulder, away from her ear and the side of her face. Her touch is light, as though she might meet a bruise by accident as she goes, as though she is being very careful not to hurt her.
“A fetus in the womb can hear their mother’s heartbeat. I can understand why they’d miss it. It’s constant. If fetuses had the ability to generalize, maybe they would think the whole world had a heartbeat.”
She pauses, looking at Eurus. She used to be so scared of her eyes. One fingertip traces lightly above her eyebrow to her temple, then down the side of her cheek, feeling the certainty of bone underneath her skin. All her long, thick hair has been moved aside, baring the spare, pale angles of her face.
Jane swallows. “Here.” She guides Eurus’ head down to lay on her chest. "Maybe you’ll sleep better.”
