How to grow an avocado (the simplest way!)
Hello again!
So you already know I’m crazy about gardening and yes, I can call myself a homesteader, thanks to all of our self-production and a title of a farming family.
But I always wanted to accomplish something special. My speciality is poisonous plants/flowers mostly, herbs - any kind and the new miracle is exotic fruits.
I love avocados. I really love this butter-like texture and the taste is just amazing. My man, on the other hand, hates it the most. Whatever, I still wanted to grow avocados, even in our small apartment. But we are lucky enough to live in a warm weather. So I said yes, let’s do this! (I originally tried mango first and it worked magnificently! You’ll see in the next article, but first our newest baby - avocado).
Just FORGET THE TOOTHPICKS! Oh, gods, I suffered so much while trying the wannabe best method with toothpicks. Never again! I use a simple method for any exo cleaing the pit, zou tic fruits and it works perfectly. But, of course, depending on the state of the seed/pit before growing.
You’ll need:
- and avocado, obviously x)
- knife
- zipper plastic bag or whatever that can be sealed
- 2 kitchen towels (for one pit)
- water and a warm (sunny) place
So let’s begin. First - eat or do whatever you like with the avocado x) This one, what you see below, should have a nice pit with no cracks or something that could make our growing impossible.
After you eat the avocado, take the pit and wash off any remains of the fruit. Like this:
After cleaning the pit, you should be able to peel it off. It’s sometimes kinda tricky, since the peel can be really thin and too cose to the pit. If you harm the pit a little, don’t worry, it’ll survive, just make sure not to cut it too deep, some scratches are ok .)
When you’re finished with peeling off the pit, just wrap it with the kitchen towel, but not too tight, just give it some space. You may also want to mark the plastix bag as I did on the picture below. I just write what’s inside and also write the date when I’ve put the pit or seed in the bag so I know how long exactly does it take for the pit/seed to germinate .)
Now wet the towel with the pit wrapped inside with water. Make sure the paper towel is fully wet, but not soaking wet. You can also spray it with the water.
As you have the pit wrapped, put it into the plastic bag and choose a warm place to leave it for a few weeks. I reccommend the windowsill .)
And this is how our avocado looks like after 8 weeks .) So happy and proud that I could actually do it! So, best of luck with your own growing x)
