Poor food budget: week 1.
My stuff: - 3lbs of carrots $2 - 3lbs of onions $2 - 900g penne pasta (2 for $1, or $0.50 each) - 1 resealable jar pasta sauce $ 1.5 - 1kg of vegetarian soup base $2.66 - 5 pack of vegetarian ramen $3 total: 12.16 boyfriend's stuff (he's got a higher budget than I do at ~$20 a week): 2 loaves of bread $4 or $2 each 400g of chicken breast $5 24 pack of processed cheese slices $3 12 large eggs $2.80 head of lettuce $2 total: $16.80 As you can see, I am a vegetarian, but my boyfriend eats a lot of meat based protein, hence why we tend to split the grocery shopping like we are roommates. We also have very different carb preferences (I prefer noodle based dishes and soups, whereas I think my boyfriend's diet is is 90% sandwich.) Today I also got a small bag of popcorn with a gift certificate but I don't know if that is cheating.
Thick and Creamy Spaghetti
1 1lb box of Spaghetti 1 jar of Ragu of your choosing [I use classic with meat sauce] 1 can of Cream of Celery * 1 clove of garlic, minced 1/2 tbsp of basil 1/2 tbsp of oregano 1/8 tsp of salt
Cook spaghetti to instructions (Usually: Boil 8-10 minutes at med-high heat), with 1/8 tsp of salt.
A few minutes before spaghetti is done, heat Ragu, Cream of Celery and spices in a separate pot, mixing well, and making sure to not overheat.
Strain noodles.
You can either mix the sauce in with the noodles, or keep separate.
*You can easily replace this with Cream of Mushroom, if you prefer. :] BOOM! Done! Thick and creamy pasta for about 5 bucks. -Muffy
