Ecclesiastes 7 | Wisdom From Sorrow, Humility, and the Fear of the Lord
ECCLESIASTES S.O.A.P. ~ CHAPTER 7
Thursday, 5/1/25
SCRIPTURE:
Remember: there’s no one on earth so righteous as to do good only and never make a mistake. ~ Ecclesiastes 7:20
OBSERVATION:
This doesn't mean I shouldn't try to be righteous and only do good...
It also means I should expect to make mistakes and fall short...
...at the same time acknowledging them...
...He already knows about them anyway...
...even before I do many (most) times...
But once again - Jesus!
Not as a "get out of jail free" card...
...but as the One to lean into and on in my weaknesses for His strength...
APPLICATION:
Be righteous - through Him...
Do good - through His strength...
Admit - confess - my mistakes...
PRAYER:
Father God - I confess my lack of righteousness - my inability to only do good - my repeated making of mistakes - my continual willful following distractions and temptations into things I know are not Your will for my life... Thank You for Jesus being my way to approach You - to guide me to righteousness and doing good for those in and around me - May I lean into His strengths with my weaknesses - In His Name, and for Your glory...
Yours, in Him...

23rd 1 Corinthians 12:12 - 25 Prayer: India (The COVID situation as well as Hindu nationalists targeting Christians in their villages...)
You can see the time stamp there. At 33:11, Mazak repeats the fundy fixation on this single verse in Ecclesiastes (more on that here). Let’s expose the whole passage (from the Message) to see Solomon’s point:
A good reputation is better than a fat bank account. Your death date tells more than your birth date.
2 You learn more at a funeral than at a feast— After all, that’s where we’ll end up. We might discover something from it.
3 Crying is better than laughing. It blotches the face but it scours the heart.
4 Sages invest themselves in hurt and grieving. Fools waste their lives in fun and games.
5 You’ll get more from the rebuke of a sage Than from the song and dance of fools.
6 The giggles of fools are like the crackling of twigs Under the cooking pot. And like smoke.
7 Brutality stupefies even the wise And destroys the strongest heart.
8 Endings are better than beginnings. Sticking to it is better than standing out.
9 Don’t be quick to fly off the handle. Anger boomerangs. You can spot a fool by the lumps on his head.
10 Don’t always be asking, “Where are the good old days?” Wise folks don’t ask questions like that.
In the usual parlance of ancient near-Eastern wisdom, Solomon is pointing out the differences between the wise and the foolish. It’s a long list. The funerals v. feasts thing is one facet to the picture he’s creating.
I’d like to challenge Mazak to center on verse 7.

Obscure Texts Sometimes Used to Diminish Women
Recently, I received a note from Marg Mowczko, a blogger who lives north of Sydney, Australia in which she mentions her post dealing with four obscure Old Testament passages sometimes used to diminish women. These four passages have caused much confusion in the minds of many people because of the problems involved in understanding how women are treated in these texts.
