No Condemnation For Those In Christ Jesus
1 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for the ones in Christ Jesus. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus set you free from the law of sin and death!
For God Did What The Law Could Not Do, For Those Walking In The Spirit
3 For the thing impossible for the Law, in that it was weak through the flesh, God did. Having sent His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, 4 in order that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, the ones walking not in-accordance-with the flesh, but in accordance with the Spirit.
For The Way of The Flesh Is Death. But You Are Not In The Flesh, But In The Spirit
5 For the ones being in accordance with the flesh are thinking the things of the flesh, but the ones being in accordance with the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. 6 For the way-of-thinking of the flesh is death, but the way-of-thinking of the Spirit is life and peace. 7 Because the way-of-thinking of the flesh is hostility toward God; for it is not subject to the Law of God, for it is not even able. 8 And the ones being in the flesh are not able to please God. 9 But you are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit— since the Spirit of God is dwelling in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, this one is not of Him.
And The Spirit Is True Life In Us Now, And Will Give Life To Our Mortal Bodies
10 And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 And if the Spirit of the One having raised Jesus from the dead is dwelling in you, the One having raised Christ from the dead will also give-life-to your mortal bodies through His Spirit dwelling in you.
So We Are Debtors To The Spirit To Put To Death The Deeds of The Flesh And Live
12 So then, brothers, we are debtors— not to the flesh, that we should be living in accordance with the flesh. 13 For if you are living in accordance with the flesh, you are going-to die. But if by the Spirit you are putting-to-death the practices of the body, you will live.
For Those Being So Led By The Spirit Are The Adopted Children of God
14 For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive a spirit of slavery again leading-to fear, but you received a Spirit of adoption by Whom we are crying-out “Abba! Father!” 16 The Spirit Himself bears-witness-with our spirit that we are children of God!
This Means We Are Joint-Heirs With Christ, Sharing His Suffering And Glory
17 And if we are children, we are heirs also. We are heirs of God, and fellow-heirs of Christ, since we are suffering-with Him in order that we may also be glorified-with Him. 18 For I consider that the sufferings of the present time are not worthy to the glory destined to be revealed to us.
Creation Itself Groans To Share In Our Glory
19 For the eager-expectation of the creation is awaiting the revelation of the sons of God. 20 For the creation was subjected to futility— not willingly, but because of the One having subjected it— in hope 21 that the creation itself also will be set-free from the slavery of decay into the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation is groaning-together and suffering-birthpains-together until the present.
We Groan For The Redemption of Our Body
23 And not only creation, but also ourselves having the firstfruit of the Spirit— we ourselves also are groaning within ourselves while eagerly-awaiting adoption, the redemption of our body. 24 For we were saved in hope. But hope being seen is not hope, for who hopes-for what he sees? 25 But since we hope-for what we do not see, we are eagerly-awaiting it with endurance.
The Spirit Groans To Help Us In Our Present Weakness
26 And similarly also the Spirit helps our weakness. For we do not know what we should pray as we ought-to, but the Spirit Himself intercedes-for us with inexpressible groanings. 27 And the One searching our hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He is interceding for the saints in accordance with God.
This Means God Is Working All Things Together Toward Our Glorification
28 And we know that all things are working-together for good for the ones loving God, the ones being called ones according to His purpose. 29 Because whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be similar-to-the-form of the image of His Son, so that He might be firstborn among many brothers. 30 And whom He predestined, these He also called. And whom He called, these He also declared-righteous. And whom He declared righteous, these He also glorified.
So What Shall We Say To All This? If God Is For Us, Who Will Condemn Us?
31 Therefore, what shall we say to these things? If [at] God is for us, who is against us? 32 He Who indeed did not spare His own Son but handed Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely-give us all things? 33 Who will bring-a-charge against the chosen ones of God? God is the One declaring-righteous! 34 Who is the one who will condemn? Christ Jesus is the One having died, but more, having been raised, Who also is at the right hand of God, Who also intercedes for us!
Nothing Can Separate Us From Christ’s Love; We Are Conquerors Through Him
35 What shall separate us from the love of Christ? Affliction, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36 Just as it has been written [in Ps 44:22] that “For your sake we are being put-to-death the whole day. We were considered as sheep for slaughter”. 37 But in all these things we overwhelmingly-conquer through the One having loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things coming, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other creation will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. — Romans 8 | Disciples’ Literal New Testament (DLNT) Disciples' Literal New Testament: Serving Modern Disciples by More Fully Reflecting the Writing Style of the Ancient Disciples, Copyright © 2011 Michael J. 14. What is something that's brought you closer to God?
21. What is your favorite time of the liturgical year?
- 🍃
Thank you for the ask <333
Grief. “How good is life for those who grieve, because they will be comforted.” I think recently grief has been one of my predominant experiences. Whether expressed though rage or anxiety, grief has been at the root. And how could I not when creation groans in labor and birth pangs to be liberated from its slavery to decay? The Spirit herself groans within me as I groan within the groaning creation. But it is only truly in grief that one can make the choice to choose joy. I have crossed the Sea of Reeds and a wild and waste land lies before me but when choose to sing with joy I am reminded that our God is a God of promises and covenant faithfulness. It is while singing in the prisons that walls begin shaking. While praying in the desert that bread falls from the skies.
Picking a favorite liturgical season is hard. But I think I must choose Advent. “O come, O come, Emmanuel, And ransom captive Israel, That mourns in lonely exile here, Until the Son of God appear.” This is my constant existence. There is never a moment when I am not mourning in lonely exile, awaiting the coming of Our Lord. As I have begun in recent months to meditate seriously upon the liturgical calendar, I think what I have noticed most is that these seasons do not exist so that only then do we focus on the realities to which they point. But they exist to remind us of things we should always have on our minds. Hope. Peace. Joy. Love. Kenosis. Martyrdom. Repentance. Mortality. Slavery. Liberation. New Creation. Unity. Kingship. During our holy seasons we pay special attention to these themes, but there should never be a point when they are not on our minds. We are every day sabbath people: every day is a holy day.
The serpentine figure is crafty and sly- but not because it gives you the answer. No, it gives you information for you to decode and the code you uncover is actually written by God. You see, according to Biblical theology the serpent in the garden "was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made." (Genesis 3:1) and is able to influence mankind to ingest the fruit (sustenance) from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, even after God Thyself warns them it will bring upon death. Mind you, within this same theology Adam and Eve are originally both called Adam or Adom. The serpentine figure wishes to separate the two, not for their independence but to disrupt the bigger picture. However there is nothing that disrupts God- Whom IS the Bigger Picture. When Adom are living freely in the garden, walking alongside God they have access to an infinite library and code of all that is Good & Holy and even so; Adom is One. This paints a picture of completion and satisfaction; the never ending thirst and the never ending quench. That is, the ourboros of Love.
Within the midst of the Garden there is also the Tree of Life, which grants immortality. A tree is akin to eldership or counsel within the ancient hebrew linguistic context- revealing these trees may be applied as metaphors for God and the great Deceiver. So it goes, if Adom already had infinite connection to all that is Good & Holy- the only increase they are met with after eating the fruit (sustenance) from the Tree (Elder) of Knowledge of Good and Evil is solely the possession of evil! How cunning!
This brings about the spiritual death of Adom and the influx of mankind's very first shame, very first guilt, very first fear, and the very first doubt.
What is seen as an act of cruelty (God kicking Adom out of the Garden) is actually an act of mercy. You see, being bound to the garden in immortal shame and spiritual death is an ourboros of misery! And so it goes, what appears to be wilderness is actually shelter.

Romans 8: Life Through the Spirit
8 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, 2 because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh, 4 in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
5 Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. 6 The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. 7 The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. 8 Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God.
9 You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ. 10 But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness. 11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.
12 Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation—but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it. 13 For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.
14 For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. 15 The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” 16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. 17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.
Present Suffering and Future Glory
18 I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. 19 For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed. 20 For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God.
22 We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. 23 Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies. 24 For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have? 25 But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.
26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. 27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.
28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. 29 For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. 30 And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.
More Than Conquerors
31 What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? 33 Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. 34 Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? 36 As it is written:
“For your sake we face death all day long;
we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”
37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord
