I really really really like the word "nuggy." And saying it over and over.
Hey so uuuuh my dad was playing video games in the living room and I kept repeating noises without realizing it??? Is this an autistic thing (TM) or is it just normal?
Did any other autistics notice that they tend to echo accents?
Like, I’m a native German and I like to think you don’t hear it immediately when I speak English (though you probably do.) I usually speak in a vaguely American (?) accent, because that’s what we used in school and what I hear most of the time.
Except. There’s this dude in my class who speaks with a pretty decent British accent (he’s German), and after a week I can barely remember what my own accent sounded like. Trying to keep my own natural pronunciation is so distracting I can’t hold a conversation at the same time. The same happened when I talked to Tony Attwood (who has a distinct British accent as well.) It doesn’t happen with “foreign” accents, like Spanish or German. It’s as if my brain goes “Oh this is the new standard? Okay.” and deletes everything I used before. I remember Attwood mentioning it but it really messes with my head.
without a constant echocalia word i die
Other people: *consistent vocabulary and dialect*
Me: *in crappy indonesian accent* wow looks like u've gotten urself in some pizdec, my darling. lol get rekt
I've always done this thing where if I hear a different sound made by someone or they pronounce something weird or they have a different voice I feel the need to repeat/imitate them. I can do it pretty well sometimes. I've always done this but I'm super aware of it lately.
