Redbox is personally one of my favorite modern day innovations. Therefore, I was even more excited about ecoATM when I found out that the same company owned invented and owned both machines. Outerwall is the company that owns both of these brands as well as Coinstar and Gazelle.
However, not many people have heard of ecoATM compared with the other brands from Outerwall. Perhaps you live in an area that this machine is very popular in, but where I live I do not know anyone that has even heard of it.
That’s a shame too, because it is a perfect example of the type of eco friendly innovations that will be able to get us closer to being a sustainable community.
So what does the machine do?
Well, the machine recycles peoples old phones and other electronics, and gives back money to the person turning in teh device. Old electronics have started being a major item in landfills, and they have chemicals in them that are not good for the earth to be absorbing. Of course, they are not the only thing in landfills that really should not be there, but this is step to solving that problem
And wouldn’t it be much better to get money back for your devices instead of letting them sit in a drawer or in a trashcan? Obviously you could sell them on Craigslist or eBay, but this is a much easier way to get some cash quickly for your old devices.
To use the machine: you place the item in the machine, and the machine takes a few minutes to do a scan of the device and decide the best price the company can offer you for it. Then the machine gives you the amount if you accept the offer, and you are done! That’s it. How much easier could it get?
The items are resold if they are good enough, or they are sold as parts. Either way they are not just ending up in a landfill somewhere doing more harm to the environment.
I know we all have electronic devices laying around, especially with Apple putting a new version of iPhone out every two months.
So I am definitely going to be turning in some old iPods, and I hope you will find your nearest ecoATM and get some spending money!
