I attended my first in-person conference on Tuesday, the British Ecological Society Aquatic Group annual meeting at Lancaster University! It was quite a small conference, but really enjoyable! So many incredibly interesting talks, ranging from global warming and ocean acidification to using meeting sponges to assess community diversity through eDNA!

Despite the grey, drizzly weather, it was a great experience, and I definitely have a few more papers to read and connections to make!

Lancaster uni also had a lovely campus with pretty architecture and lots of little green spaces! There was a gorgeous coffee shop on campus (who do amazing vegan hot chocolate!) called Coastal and co. If you're ever on campus, I highly recommend them! :)

On a cold, rainy, and stormy day in Scotland.

Studying with my favourite blanket, a hot water bottle, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium lo-fi squid playlist really is the best way to study.

Taking a short break from trying to figure out my dynamic energy budget models and switching focus to hydrodynamic & particle tracking models!

Hopefully I'll use this to simulate mussel larvae moving around the Scottish West coast :)

Can't wait to get properly stuck in with model running and playing around with different climate scenarios ect!

My dynamic energy budget (DEB) model using data for my study species finally resembles something coherent!

There's still so much I need to learn about this type of model before it can be used fully in my project though, and some parameters that need figuring out properly. But look! It goes!

Also, it snowed quite well over the weekend here in Scotland. So please enjoy this photo I took of a loch I stopped at while having a car-lunch at the weekend! :)

Sorry for the silence. My mental health has really ✨taken a hit✨ recently.

But! I'm back now, AND I finally, finally got a deb model to run with my mussel species! I'm thrilled!

Now I have to figure out a couple of parameters and find some temperature variable parameters, so that's the next big problem to solve.

Anyway, progress is being made, and I'm trying to get better.

It doesn't look like much, but trust me, it's amazing considering I've just been getting errors for months.

After a week of trying to learn about Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) models, I finally got onto R to have a go today! Always the way, taking too long to learn about the method and not having enough time to play around with it 🙃
