Coffee grounds have been tested in a laboratory setting for their potential use as a cleanup agent of common agricultural runoff, suggesting that along with compost, snail repellent, and many other uses, used coffee grounds could protect water sources from agricultural pollution. The study looked at bentazone—a common herbicide used in agriculture, and found that when coffee grounds are activated with zinc chloride the carbon molecules therein could remove 70% of the bentazone content from contaminated water.

Some key points:

They recognize that trees both add to underground aquifers and shade above ground water(protecting form evaporation).

They are educating farmers that trees add to the soil microbiome(such as with leaf mulch) and don’t steal nutrients.

They work directly with the farmers and help them to adopt trees by offering them at a low price (thanks to subsidies).

They have been doing this so long that some of the trees are fully grown. Trees planted can be cut down approximately once a lifetime, so farmers are planting different generations of trees to help fund their children’s future.

There is now a tradition of giving out trees as wedding favours, so that people go home and plant the tree in memory of the wedding 🥺

They talk about how the trees can protect farms from both floods and droughts
