I’d like to take a moment to open up a discussion about our trash: when does something become “our trash”? Of course something that we purchase for ourselves and throw away is our own trash; we should take responsibility for that. But what about other things?
-What if someone buys you a gift that’s wrapped in plastic? Is that your trash because it was bought for you, even though you didn’t directly support it?
-What if you share someone’s food that comes in packaging, does that become your trash too?
-What if someone gives you food that’s about to go bad, but it’s in packaging? Is it your trash because you’ve accepted it, or is it theirs because they purchased it?
-Essentially, my big question is: what does and does not go into one's zero waste trash jar?
These are some questions I’ve asked myself a lot lately. When it came to the trash jar, I wasn’t sure what exactly constituted as “my trash”. Was it mine if I asked for no straw at a restaurant but the waiter accidentally put it in? I’m really interested in hearing your thoughts because I’m not totally sure about it myself. Let me know in the comments!
