The majority of Medusa sprite expressions are found on her right one, as she often converses with Athena and the other characters of the demo to her left.
It took some time to get her snake hair right again, and we'd nearly forgot to flip her snake charm so it was also properly mirrored.

The rest of Athena's default sprites from Extra Credits with Athena. Though Athena tries hard to keep up the perfect student image on campus, her resolve often crumbles when babysitting Medusa.
Sometimes we were fortunate enough to reuse certain parts of other sprites to cut down on the work - the lightbulb sprite, for example. Others like Proud and Call Minerva needed to be drawn from the ground up.
The first alternative sprites for Medusa's default outfit.
Unlike Athena, most of Medusa's sprites are positioned on the right-hand side of the screen, with her left-facing sprites appearing only five times throughout the game. Because of this, we ended up creating two versions of her default outfit: one facing left and one facing right, and made her snake hair reacted along with her.
These left-facing sprites are primarily used during the many scenes where Athena and Medusa explore Olympus University together, meeting Athena's friends, exchanging wits with the ever-snarky Artemis, or crossing paths with the unsettling Professor Poseidon.
Hello everyone! Kawada Studios is currently in search of several voice actors to fill supporting roles for the demo of Extra Credits with Athena.
We've set a payment of $0.35 per word spoken, with $20 dollars as the minimum payout.
These include:
Rector Zeus — Male, 40–60
Athena’s father and the leader of Olympus University.
We’re looking for a warm-hearted voice actor who can capture Zeus’s overwhelming pride for his daughter, his tendency to embarrass her in front of others, and the eccentric personality that's always bubbling underneath the dignified exterior.
429 words across 56 lines
Payment: $155
Nike — Female, 18–25
A confident, athletic go-getter and a member of Athena’s inner circle of friends.
Think Rainbow Dash from My Little Pony: competitive, energetic, outspoken, and endlessly driven. Nike is one of Olympus University’s most decorated track-and-field athletes.
91 words across 17 lines
Payment: $40
Note: Nike is being designed as a Black woman, so Black actresses and actresses from other POC backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.
Hephaestus — Male, 18–25
A reclusive but kind soul beneath a harsh steampunk exterior.
Hephaestus spends most of his free time tinkering in his workshop and generally prefers the company of robots to that of other deities. He is also part of Athena’s friendship group and quietly nurses an unrequited crush on her.
93 words across 14 lines
Payment: $40
Artemis — Female, 18–25
The resident gossip of Olympus University.
Years spent hunting wild game have somehow translated into an extraordinary talent for spreading salacious rumours about her classmates—especially Athena and Medusa, both of whom she holds a particular dislike towards.
45 words across 7 lines
Payment: $20
Note: Artemis is currently being designed as an Indigenous American woman, so Native American and Indigenous actresses are strongly encouraged to apply.
Ahura Mazda — Female, 40–60
The head librarian of Olympus University and one of two Zoroastrian deities working there, alongside her daughter, Ahriman.
Ahura Mazda is widely respected by the Greek faculty and shares a friendly rivalry with Zeus over board games.
4 words across 2 lines
Payment: $20
Note: Our version of Ahura Mazda is female, and actresses from Persian, Iranian, or Zoroastrian backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.
The Sphinx — Female, 40–60
An exchange professor teaching at Olympus University and a transgender woman.
The Sphinx is calm, intelligent, composed, and quietly dislikes everything Medusa represents. She prefers giving her students riddles rather than traditional tests, though she occasionally struggles to manage classroom behaviour—particularly when one green Gorgon girl is involved.
43 words across 9 lines
Payment: $20
Note: Egyptian and transgender actresses are strongly encouraged to apply.

Initial concept art of Medusa's outfits from Extra Credits with Athena.
The perennial troublemaker of Olympus University, Medusa's early outfits were designed around the idea of Keep Your Distance.
After years of bad experiences with her fellow students, she struggles to trust others. We wanted to reflect that through combat boots, studs, spikes and fishnet sleeves - a look that says, don't get too close.
Late '90s and early 2000s snarky heroines from film and TV were another major inspiration for her design, alongside pop punk, nu-metal and alternative rock fashion.
She only begins to let her guard down after she's partnered with a certain red-haired Goddess of Wisdom for her final degree project.

Making sprites is hard work. In total, Athena has 28 sprites for her default outfit, along with 7 for her fencing outfit and 4 for her pond outfit. (You'll get to see those at a later date.)
With each new draft of the demo, we were able to trim her default outfit from 40 expressions down to the final 28. Some, such as her hand-over-mouth expression, are only used in a single scene. Others, like her happy or angry expressions, appear throughout the demo. After all, even a goddess has her off days.

After deciding that outfit 1 would become Athena's default sprite, we still felt that it was missing a few details that would give it the same character as Medusa's design.
The first addition was a red sash, which we wrapped around Athena's robes to break up the white a little more and tie the design together with her helmet and the red trimmings added throughout the outfit.
More importantly, the second addition was a miniature version of Athena's Aegis. Unlike in many retellings of Greek mythology, where the Aegis bears the head of Medusa, in Extra Credits with Athena it instead bears the head of Pallas, Athena's childhood friend, whom she accidentally slew during a sparring match. Athena honours her memory by carrying a replica of the Aegis close to her heart at all times.
We ran into more than a few headaches with Athena's default sprite, repeatedly resizing the helmet, sash, brooch and chin until everything finally felt right. We were able to let Athena's auburn hair fall past her shoulders and let Pallas's face peek through from the Aegis.

Medusa takes precautions to avoid other people. Having snakes for hair isn't enough to scare most people away, she also needs a studded choker, a studded belt, a chain-link necklace adorned with spikes, and a small snake pendant too.
We settled on outfit number 4 as Medusa's default look, after experimenting with a wide variety of sleeve patterns and whether not to make them looser or more form-fitting.
We went for the tighter sleeves, as they created a stronger silhouette and made for a better contrast with Athena's own flowing robes.
