11/288 - Apparently, true acting happens at the Optometrist. I recently learnt about Ed Hooks and his teachings after attending a lecture he gave in Viborg. I’ve also got his books at the library and there’s a certain place, where every time I read over it, I am reminded about the one time I went to an optometrist and had to walk on a straight line and catch a ball while avoiding a swinging pendulum and answering questions about my family. Talk about having your character “play an action in pursuit of an objective while overcoming an obstacle.” (From “Acting for Animators” by Ed Hooks) I can recommend his books! Always nice with food for thought!

On Purpose

I have a morning ritual. Bruce the Cat wakes me up at 5AM. While the kettle boils he and I go outside for a breath of fresh pre-dawn air. I define an adrenaline moment as one that the character will remember when he turns 85 years old and looks back on his life. I am convinced that effective story telling necessarily includes at least one adrenaline moment, and it may include many.

Animators begin with a disadvantage when it comes to gestures because the dialogue is usually recorded first. The temptation is to listen to the words and then make the gestures and mouth sync to them. New animators too often create over-gesticulation because they are trying to put a gesture with every single word. This puts dialogue on a pedestal that it really does not deserve. The impulse to communicate comes from within, and gestures are as primary a form of expression as words are. Think of them as a form of truth-telling for the character. Get inside and connect with his feelings, and let that be the motivation for gesture.
