Steve: I don't think anyone will ever truly be in love with me.
Eddie: Are you sure?
Steve: Yes.
Eddie, aggressively pointing at himself: Are you fucking sure?!
Eddie opens his eyes and wishes he hadn't. He really doesn't want to deal with his surroundings right now. Because he's pretty sure he knows who that head of hair blocking his vision belongs to and he just - he doesn't have it in him, okay? Not now, not ever.
Dealing with the, still kind of high, walk of shame would be bad enough, but to do it from the guy he's in the middle of saving the world with, who he's sharing living arrangements with at the radio station so the walk of shame is not as much of a walk as it's fifteen steps, now that. That he can't take.
Steve stirs before Eddie could panic his way out of the bed.
Eddie lies there, frozen, as he witnesses Steve come to the same realization as him as he wakes. Steve's arms freeze mid-stretch and his back (his back, holy shit) goes rigid. The back of Eddie's brain notes the tone of muscles for later use, because he's sure he'll never be seeing it again after this.
They got really high last night. Like, really, really high. And they don't like each other! Not like that! They're friendly 'cause they have to be, and because they're in the middle of the whole saving the world thing together, and there's Dustin - oh god. Dustin' s not gonna let them hear the end of it if this fucks anything up between them. How could Eddie have been so stupid?! How could he let himself -
Steve arm drops behind him and hits Eddie's hip, searching around for a beat and then gripping onto the covers over Eddie's waist. Eddie freezes, eyes wide. Steve's not moving either.
"Eddie? That you?", Steve's voice is low and scratchy with sleep. Eddie has to take a few moments to compose himself, blink, lick his lips and finally mutter a pathetic little: "Yeah."
"Oh thank god"
Steve flops over himself without letting go of Eddie, struggling for a beat and then they're nose to nose. Steve's smiling, a little crooked.
"Man, I felt someone behind me and got scared for a second there."
Eddie swallows like this is normal.
"Who'd you-uh. Who'd you think it was if not me?"
Steve's brows twitch.
"No one else really around here to be but you, man."
"Oh. Right"
Eddie's disappointed. This is the best possible outcome he could've hoped for - Steve was just letting out some steam and was cool enough with Eddie to use a guy for that - and he's still disappointed. He's not attacking you or pretending he doesn't remember, take the win.
"I didn't mean it like that!" Steve hurries to babble at his frown.
"Not in like, you're the only person available way - well I mean you kind of are, but not-", Eddie stares at him open mouthed, "It's not only that for me! I - I mean, I guess it looks like that but, I actually think you're really hot, and - not that I don't think you're also a good person, I do, I just think that - I'm kind of bad at explaining myself, but yeah, you're hot and we're here and I think that - hey could you say something and stop me from further embarrassing myself?", Steve pants.
"I like you."
Now Steve's the one gaping.
"Oh."
"Yeah." Eddie wasn't gonna blurt it out like that, but Steve's little speach must have activated his own brain to mouth filter to dissappear.
"... Sooo. What now?"
Eddie shrugs.
They stay quiet long enough to become awkward and then Steve jumps and grabs Eddie's shoulders: "Holy shit, I like you too! Sorry!"
Startled, Eddie stares at him like a fish.
"That was supposed to be the point of my little speach and I just realized I barely called you hot! Eddie, I like you. And I wanna see where we could take this", he takes Eddie's hand between his own (and his hands really are as big as he thought last night, hello). If you want that, too?"
Eddie looks him in the eyes and brushes away a strand of hair with his free hand.
"So you think I'm hot?"
Steve blinks at him, a little bitchy.
"Yeah. I do."
A grin spreads over Eddie's face and he cranes his neck to check the clock behind Steve.
"I wanna see where it goes, too. But for now, we have two hours before everyone else gets here. Show me how hot you think I am?"
Steve groans and slots their bodies together.
"Jesus. The hottest."

Eddie collapsed next to you on his bed, his frizzy hair clinging to the sweat on his forehead. You both stayed quiet for a moment, enjoying the blissful after sex state before Eddie reached over and pulled a cigarette from the carton, eagerly lighting it. He took a slow drag, the end of the cigarette glowing as a trail of smoke twirled upwards toward the ceiling in the dim light.
Eddie passed you the cigarette, his fingers brushing yours, which always made your heart skip, but tonight it made you a little nervous. He exhaled as you inhaled, savouring this moment before you asked him about the party. Again.
You passed the cigarette back to him, "Eds," you murmured, staring at the swirling smoke. "Did you think about it?"
"Huh?"
"Steve's party tomorrow," you reminded him, "you told me you'd think about it."
Eddie didn't look at you. "Yeah, I uh, I'm not going. Jonathan invited me over tomorrow night for a smoke."
You shuffled onto your side, studying Eddie's angelic features carefully, trying not to get trapped in the beauty of his delicate doe eyes, before reminding yourself that he's let you down, once again, after promising to consider joining you at the party.
"You didn't even think about it, did you?"
Eddie agrees to step in as Steve’s second coach one day when they’re down and out of town so he doesn’t have to drop out of the tournament, he agrees to finally participate in Eddie’s next campaign as part of the deal. He doesn’t expect Eddie to be a good fucking coach, pep talking the kids and even giving good technique advice(unfortunately retained memories from when he played little league until he moved in with Uncle Wayne at 12). It’s…really hot, and he doesn’t know what to do about it.
(And then comes Steve joining a campaign, charming his way through and actually kind of rocking it even if he doesn’t really know what he’s doing. He gets eaten by a serpent while and rolls lucky enough to kill the monster from the inside and hack his way back out and the kids are horrified and freaking out from how cool it is and Steve literally leans over at one point to whisper with a smirk because of course he notices, “I gave you a nerd boner didn’t I.” And it’s true so Eddie can tell him to fuck off all he wants but he’s flushed pink while he says it and Steve just leans back in his chair and smiles.)

Someone throw dividers at me please
The flowers were from Dustin.
The oranges were from Max. The magazine was from Gareth.
It arrived on day four of Eddie's recovery, still in its plastic sleeve, slid onto the bed with no explanation and no eye contact.
His right arm was bandaged from wrist to shoulder. Moving too fast still made something in his ribs protest loudly. He was bored completely out of his mind and had been staring at the same water stain on the hospital ceiling for six hours and counting.
He picked up the magazine.
———
It was Hustler. Of course it was. Gareth had probably bought it at a gas station and died internally in the process.
Eddie peeled the plastic sleeve off with his good hand and flipped through it with the idle curiosity of a man who had nothing else going on. The pictures were fine. He turned to the fiction section, as a known literature lover…
He almost missed it.
He was halfway through a story on page forty-seven when something snagged. He went back. Read the line again.
He sat up too fast and his ribs screamed at him but he didn't care.
He read the whole thing.
It was anonymous. A reader submission from [city redacted]. The magazine's editorial note called it "unusually literary for the genre" which, even now, made him grin despite himself. He read it twice more, slowly, the way you re-read something you can't quite believe is real.
The bar with the stage the size of a closet. The band setting up. The guitarist with the dark curls. The gin and tonics. Her watching him through the solo and clenching her thighs. The hallway by the bathrooms. “Drive fast.” The hotel. The shower. All this could be a coincidence. But not “two blocks from the High school”.
He dropped his head back against the pillow and stared at the ceiling with a very different expression than the one he'd been wearing for the last four days.
She'd written about him.
She'd gone back to her city and she'd written it down and sent it to a magazine and it had been published and Gareth had bought it at a gas station without knowing and put it in his hands in a hospital bed in Hawkins, Indiana.
The universe, Eddie thought, had a genuinely deranged sense of humor.
He looked down at the magazine again. Then at the closed door. Then at the magazine.
His ribs hurt. His arm hurt. He had a button he could press that would bring a nurse in approximately four minutes.
He found page forty-seven again, settled back against the pillow, and got his good hand busy.
———
It wasn't hard to get there. The story was good — she wrote direct and precise and liked even more that it was describing how she felt back then. He read the part about his solo and felt something warm spread through his chest that had nothing to do with what his hand was doing.
She'd watched him play and then she'd gone home and written it down.
He stroked himself slowly at first, reading, then faster, the magazine went down on his chest, and when he came it was with his head back and his jaw clenched and her name forming behind his teeth. Not sweetheart. The real one.
He lay there for a moment, breathing.
Then he looked at the ceiling and said, out loud, to no one:
"Come back to Hawkins."
Eddie finds, buys, and then completely overhauls a kilt from the thrift store. It fits him like a second skin and he's proud of it. But. It's Hawkins. He can't exactly throw on a skirt and fishnets and a mesh shirt to sell weed at Tommy's party on a random Friday. So the gorgeous, incredible, basically magical outfit stays buried in the back of his miniscule closet. He puts it on every once in a while, just to make sure it still fits. It literally always does.
And then the world turns upside down, so he's suddenly good friends with Robin Buckley, band nerd supreme, and Steve Harrington, king of the douches. And he'd defend them both with his life. Has defended them with his life.
So when they convince him to go out with them in the city one night, to a very openly advertised rave (which he insists makes it not a rave), he agrees, but also decides if that if he's gonna endure a party night, he's going to dress the fucking part.
He shows up, dressed like that, sure he's going to get mocked all night. Instead, Robin squeals, and Steve Harrington can't pick his jaw up off the floor.
For the entire night, they dance around the situation, both literally and figuratively, until Robin suddenly disappears into the dark corners of the warehouse they're in with a blonde girl and a dream. Then, there's no buffer. Then, Steve's stares get harder to ignore. Then, Eddie stops trying to ignore him. And then, his night gets a whole lot more interesting.
His night, and his week, and his next several years become mapped out by Steve's tongue in his mouth, and Eddie, in the back of his addled brain, thanks the magical freaking skirt.

“Sorry, man, not tonight.”
“Why not?”
Jeff asks a fair question, but it’s not one Eddie can answer. Not truthfully.
His mind is a mess today, has been for the last week, maybe the whole month. Anniversaries always fuck with his brain, he feels deeply, Wayne says. His dad used to say he was soft hearted, but sometimes it sounded like an accusation. Weak. That’s what Al had meant, even if he smiled after he said it.
“I’m not feeling great, man. I just want to flake out on the couch.”
“Well, flake out on my couch. I’ll kick Gareth on the floor. C’mon, man, it’s Headbanger’s Ball. This is our night!”
