Chrissy walked hand-in-hand with Eddie through the park, her tea-length skirt billowed in the wind.
“Chrissy, I’ve got something to ask you…” She looked up at her fella, Eddie Munson. He was so gorgeous. Shaggy black hair slicked back with gel and his signature leather jacket. Her favorite thing about him though was his eyes. They had just been on a date to the malt shop when Eddie suggested they take a walk through the park.
Eddie stopped in his tracks and reached into the pocket of his leather jacket. He pulled out a shiny gold ring. His class ring. Inside the band was an inscription - Eddie & Chrissy Forever
“Will you go steady with me, sweetheart?”
She and Eddie had been dating for six weeks. All she wanted was to be his girl. Tears of happiness sprung from her eyes.
“Of course, Eddie!” Chrissy jumped up and down excitedly and let Eddie slip the ring onto her left finger. It was a promise. A promise that one day, a more permanent band would reside on that finger. A promise that she and Eddie would be together forever.
Chrissy threw her arms around Eddie’s neck as he lifted her up into the air. Eddie brought her in for a sweet kiss. All was right in her world…
Until she heard that damned clock.
A cold shiver ran up her spine. She looked toward the woods and saw a grandfather clock embedded in one of the trees.
“Chrissy? Is something wrong?” Eddie frowned, following her gaze to the tree line.
Anger swelled through her. Not here. Not Eddie. Not this time.
Chrissy cheered as Eddie shredded his guitar solo. The whole crowd was fawning all over the lead singer of Corroded Coffin but Eddie only had eyes for Chrissy.
“Ladies and gentlemen, this next song is dedicated to my new bride.” Eddie pointed at Chrissy in the crowd, his eyes shining bright with adoration. “And when I say new, I really mean new. We got married two hours ago.”
It wasn’t something they planned, per se. But this was Corroded Coffin’s first gig at Madison Square Garden. Everyone was hopped up on adrenaline and looking for something to kill a few hours before the show.
“We could just get drunk in our hotel room.” Jeff suggested while they rode in the limo to the Four Seasons.
“That is such a cliche!” Gareth whined. “We’ve got to do something memorable. Something crazy! Something worthy of the name CORRODED COFFIN!”
“Chrissy and I could get married.” Eddie said through a chuckle. The other guys joined in the laughter, but Chrissy just stared at him with wide doe-eyes.
Eddie let out a half-laugh at his fiance’s obvious joke. They’ve been engaged for about two months but he was sure Chrissy would have wanted a grand affair.
“You’re pulling my leg, baby.”
“No, Eddie. I’m serious. Let’s do it. Let’s get married right now!”
Eddie’s laughter died out and his heart started to race.
“You don’t… you don’t want a big wedding?”
“Eddie, I love you. The wedding doesn’t matter to me.” Chrissy curled up next to Eddie in the limo, her arms wrapping around his middle. “I just want you.”
That was enough for Eddie.
So, an hour later, Eddie and Chrissy were at a small chapel in New York with the rest of Corroded Coffin as their witnesses.
Chrissy wore a short lace dress with matching white go-go boots. Eddie stayed in his same rock and roll attire with the addition of a tie and blazer.
They sealed their vows with a kiss and two hours later, they were at Madison Square Garden for Corroded Coffin’s New York debut. Chrissy couldn’t be happier to be cheering her husband on as he showed off his talent to an adoring crowd.
“Chrissy, this is for you.”
Eddie started strumming the chords to Master of Puppets. Chrissy enjoyed the familiar tune until a striking dissonant sound echoed through the arena, harsh on the blushing bride’s eardrums.
“AH!” Chrissy winced, holding her hands over her ears. When she looked up at the stage again, she didn’t see her husband and her closest friends- she saw a sea of red and a giant grandfather clock on the big screen.
“Not again…” Hot tears began to streak down Chrissy’s cheeks. Why was this happening again? She and Eddie were happy. Why couldn’t she be left alone for once?
“Mrs. Munson, your scan looks great. The little one is progressing just fine.” The doctor tucked Chrissy’s sonogram into her file.
Eddie was beaming with pride, his arms secure around his wife.
Her pregnancy couldn’t have come at a more perfect time. Corroded Coffin just finished their last tour so Eddie could take some time off to be with Chrissy before the baby came.
After the doctor sent them home with a clean bill of health, Eddie went to the kitchen to brew Chrissy a cup of tea. Herbal green tea with two teaspoons of honey, just the way she liked it.
“Tea’s ready, sweetheart.” Eddie called out.
Eddie carried the cup into the living room but his wife was nowhere to be seen. Eddie smiled to himself, having an inkling as to where she might be.
Eddie padded into the nursery, finding Chrissy running her fingertips over the stork wallpaper she picked out.
Chrissy grinned as Eddie placed the cup in her hands. She thanked him with a quick kiss and settled into the rocking chair.
“Do you think it’ll be a boy or a girl?” She asked.
Eddie hummed to himself as he dug around one of the boxes of baby stuff they bought.
“A girl. Roxanne Munson.”
“Roxanne?” Chrissy made a face. “How about Rose or Daphne?”
“It’s a baby, Chrissy, not a perfume line.”
Chrissy sat her tea down and stood up, walking over to Eddie.
“Well, there’s only one solution.” Chrissy popped a kiss on her husband’s cheek. “Hope for a boy.”
“I’m not so sure a carbon copy of me running around is a good idea. Might be too much chaos for one household.”
Chrissy pouted. She hated hearing Eddie talk about himself in such a negative way, even if he was just joking. She wrapped her arms around Eddie’s neck and pressed a kiss to his lips.
“If our baby is anything like his father, he’ll be perfect.”
Eddie’s cheeks flushed. After all these years, Chrissy still managed to keep him on his toes. He slipped his hands around his wife’s waist and brought her closer to him.
“Well, instead of squabbling over names, how about we decide on something less daunting?” Eddie reached inside the box of baby supplies and pulled out two stuffed animals- a bunny and a teddy bear. “Baby’s first stuffie.”
Chrissy eyed the stuffies with intensity.
“As you wish. Would you like to do the honors?”
Chrissy giggled and took the bunny from Eddie’s hands. She walked over to the crib and gingerly placed the bunny on the head of the pillow.
Eddie slid one hand around Chrissy’s shoulders and the other rested on her baby bump.
“In about five months, it’ll be our baby sleeping there instead of Mr. Bunny.” Eddie said wistfully.
“Wow, you are really bad with names.” Chrissy teased.
Eddie playfully bit the tip of her nose and Chrissy squealed. She rested her head against Eddie’s shoulder. She sighed contentedly.
Sometimes she couldn’t believe this was her life. It felt too perfect, almost like it was some kind of fantasy. How did she get lucky enough to deserve this life? To deserve a family and a home with Eddie?
Chrissy took in a sharp breath.
She looked back at the crib. Mr. Bunny was gone, replaced by a gaping hole. Her future baby’s crib sunk into the floor and the sounds of a child’s cries filled her ears.
Chrissy looked up at her husband, but she didn’t see the love of her life, she saw a clock. That goddamn clock. Only this time, the glass shattered and an army of spiders began to crawl out of it.
“No. No. You can’t do this to me! NO!”
Chrissy woke up with a start. It took a moment to get her bearings but she was in Eddie’s trailer. It was 1986. Senior year.
She felt the top of her stomach. No baby bump. Just Eddie’s Hellfire t-shirt.
Chrissy’s head snapped over to Eddie’s sleeping form. His bare back was toward her and he was snoring into his pillow.
She couldn’t put into words the wave of relief that washed over her. Still, she was too unsettled to go to sleep. Chrissy debated for a few minutes but ultimately, she reached over and shook Eddie awake.
“Hmm? Whas ‘appen?” Eddie mumbled, rubbing at his eyes. He looked up at Chrissy. Even groggy from sleep, he could tell when something was off with her. “You okay?”
“I had a nightmare. A bad one.”
Eddie sat up immediately.
“You wanna talk about it?”
Eddie opened up his arms and let Chrissy crawl into his embrace. She tucked her head into his chest and he wrapped his arms tightly around her frame.
“I’ve got you. When you’re ready to talk about it, I’m ready to listen, yeah?”
Chrissy nodded into his chest. She tried to focus on his scent and the feeling of his thumb running up and down her back.
She was safe. She was with Eddie. Nothing bad was going to happen to her, not as long as Eddie was around.
“Just out of curiosity… What do you think of Roxanne?”
Eddie blinked his heavy eyelids, still not awake enough to fully process her question.
“Roxanne from English? Um… I dunno. She kind of smells weird and she always pops her gum really loud–”
“No,” Chrissy giggled at her boyfriend’s confusion. “No, like the name.”
“Oh. Yeah, it’s okay I guess.” Eddie moved his head so he could get a better look at Chrissy. “Why?”
She reached up and pressed a kiss to Eddie’s lips.
Eddie got a good look at Chrissy’s eyes now. He frowned. He could tell something was bothering her. It’s that same look she had in the forest the day they reconnected.
“That nightmare really bothered you, huh?”
Chrissy sighed. She nodded sadly and Eddie’s heart broke for her. He was no stranger to nightmares and he hated it when Chrissy was scared. At least in the real world, he could protect her. If there was a way he could march into her subconscious and beat up her dream demons, he absolutely would.
But instead, he reaches for his copy of Lord of the Rings on his nightstand and opens it up to the first page.
“How about I read to you until you fall asleep again?”
“That would be great.” She pressed another kiss to Eddie’s cheek. “Thank you.”
Chrissy cuddled up against Eddie’s chest once more as he started to read. She was lulled to sleep by his dulcet tones and this time, she dreamt of nothing more than hobbits, elves, and Eddie.
