The North Shore Line ceased operations less than a year after this photo was taken, in January 1963, due in large part to commuters choosing to use the new Interstate highway system instead of rail transportation to get to and from Chicago. This is represented in this photo by the Edens Expressway (Interstate 94) bridge in the background at right.
