STEELHEAD COFFEE
by Andrew Hem, Edwin Ushiro, and Yoskay Yamamoto
Raised as the child of Cambodian immigrants in Los Angeles, Pow!Wow! says Andrew Hem’s work “bridges disparate aesthetic influences as well as cultural touchstones and sensibilities.” Between his slightly off color palettes and his typical focus on some individual staring back at the viewer, Hem’s paintings have a eerie ability to draw viewers into his other-worldly scenes. For this Pow!Wow! Long Beach 2016 work Hem collaborated with Edwin Ushiro, a Maui born and Art Center trained designer and artist, and Yoskay Yamamoto, a self-taught illustrator from Japan who moved to the U.S. as a teen and fell in love with the West coast. The painting is at E. Wardlaw Rd. and Orange Ave. in the California Heights neighborhood of Long Beach, on the side of Steelhead Coffee. @andrewhem @edwinushiro @yoskayyamamoto @powwowlongbeach @steelheadcoffee
