SANTA MONICA COLLEGE
by Andrew Hem
In 2015 renowned @SMCedu alum artist and muralist Andrew Hem went back to school, says @SantaMonicaMirror , but this time only briefly to paint this artistic tribute. Hem told the Mirror that the piece represents him and his sister—the boy standing in a snowy Big Bear setting and the girl standing in the ocean as a nod to the Santa Monica location. Hem also said the "amorphous nature of his characters’ features" was intentional. Born during his parents fleeing Cambodia Hem says he grew up balancing multiple cultures so it's not surprising that he didn't want viewers of this work see a person of any particular race. @andrewhem/
