My emotional life is a mess and I am so behind on what I’m supposed to write but I found these treasures on the free shelf in the university building. (Especially in love with that cute edition of Eichendorff’s Aus dem Leben eines Taugenichts.)

"Aus dem Leben eines Taugenichts", aber auf die Art und Weise, wie Shrek der Dritte gemacht wurde.
wir sehnen uns nach Hause Und wissen nicht, wohin?

I myself am a fan of romantic songs from the end of the 19th century all through to the early 30's. By reading "The Golden Reign" by Clare Sydney Smith about her friendship with TE Lawrence I found this little gem about their shared love for music, how he helped her with the pronunciation of the german Lieder and that "Verschwiegene Liebe" was his favorite song to be sung by her. It fits beautifully. Those two sound to sweet to be true together. So here it is, in a rendition by the great Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Gerald Moore on the piano. Enjoy!
Verschwiegene Liebe — Secret Love
Über Wipfel und Saaten
In den Glanz hinein -
Wer mag sie erraten,
Wer holte sie ein?
Gedanken sich wiegen,
Die Nacht ist verschwiegen,
Gedanken sind frei.
Errat' es nur eine,
We an sie gedacht
Beim rauschen der Haine,
Wenn niemand mehr wacht
Als die Wolken, die fliegen -
Mein Lieb is verschwiegen
Und schön wie die Nacht.
Over treetops and newly sown fields
Far into the splendour!
Who may divine
And who may restrain
My thoughts that are floating?
But the night keeps its secret
And thoughts, then, are free.
If one were only to guess
Who was thinking of them
In the rustling grove
When no one stands watch
Save the clouds that are flying!
But my love is a secret
Within the beauty of night.

Schaust Du mich aus Deinen Augen lächelnd wie aus Himmeln an fühl’ ich wohl, daß keine Lippe solche Sprache führen kann.
