El Chamuco and La Noche are in bed in the land of the remembered, sleeping.
La Noche wakes up to hear singing, she couldn’t make out the words because it was so muffled, but it was a beautiful melody with a beautiful voice. She decides to find the source of the singing, she leaves where her and El Chamuco were sleeping, “dark is the night….” The voice rang, she looks around to figure out where the voice could possibly be.
She starts walking around in the castle. “only bullets whistle across the steppe…” A few moments later, La Noche had looked everywhere for the source but couldn’t find it, she was hoping that it wasn’t coming from the basement, where she couldn’t go. “only the wind hums in the wires, the stars flicker dimly….” But the melody is so beautiful and the voice is so breathtaking and soft that it felt familiar and comforting, she hesitates at first, “in the dark night, my love, I know, you are not sleeping…”
She then gets a feeling that someone or something knows she’s awake, she eventually walks down to the basement, the doors closing behind her, “and by the baby's crib you secretly wipe away a tear…”
the stairs were awfully longer than La Noche remembered last time she was here. She looks at the writing on the walls, it was La Muerte’s handwriting, she rolls her eyes, she knew her sister would write all of this, “how I love the depth of your gentle eyes…” as she stepped deeper in the basement, writings turns into murals about how great La Muerte is. “how I want to press my lips to them…”
La Noche starts to get a little annoyed but the singing was the only thing that’s keeping her going deeper in the basement, she keeps walking down and seeing murals about her sister, she gets irritated, what’s so great about her? Just because she rules the land of the remembered doesn’t mean she’s all perfect. “the dark night separates us, my love…” she sees even more murals, and more, and more, until finally, she yells and gives up.
As she was going up, she senses a slight anger in the singing voice “and in the dark, troubled steppe has come to lie between us…” La Noche wonders if the voice knows how she’s feeling and relates to her, she sighs and keeps walking down, she closes her eyes so she couldn’t look at the murals.
After a while she slips and almost falls, she opens her eyes, only to see a family portrait of her and her sisters all together, “I have faith in you, my sweetheart….” La Noche tears up, but immediately wipes them away and moves on.
Once she was in the basement, the voice was getting louder, she must be close. She gets past every obstacle easily, she expected passing them would be easy, “that faith has shielded me from bullets in this dark night...”
La Noche comes across two massive corridors, she opens them quietly and walks in. As she was trying to find the voice, she wonders why it would be here, until she realizes, “I am glad, I am calm in deadly battle…” it’s coming from Lady Micte’s shrine. She immediately runs over to the room where the shrine was.
She approaches another set of massive corridors, La Noche stops for a moment, she rests her head to listen if the voice was there, it was. “I know you will meet me with love, no matter what happens….”
She opens the corridors quietly and peeks through them, her eyes widen, she sees Lord Mictlan in his new body, with his silver armor and red cape, kneeling down at the shrine, singing?? It was very rare of him to sing, very rare. But he was singing with his hosts’ voice and not his. “death is not terrible, we've met with it more than once in the steppe.…”
He stands up and lowers his head, hugging his arms “and here it looms over me once again…” La Noche expression softens, she understands why he’s here, he’s miserable that his love betrayed him and misses her dearly, but he had to do it, for power.
“you await my return, sitting sleepless near a cradle…” he looks up at the shrine and smiles, “and so I know that nothing will happen to me…” he starts humming the melody and paces around. He stops and slowly turns his head to La Noche with that wicked grin of his as he repeats the last verse “and so I know that nothing will happen to me…”
La Noche shivers in fear, she opens the corridor completely and clears her throat, “hola my lord…” she smiles nervously, “I…definitely didn’t come down here to listen to your song…” she chuckles nervously. Lord Sanchez chuckles back with his fused voice again but lowly and softly, “it’s ok if you did, don’t worry about it…” he looks back at the shrine, his expression softening, “but I must ask you…” he then floats up to get a close up of the picture of his deceased wife, “have you ever had someone you love betray you like this?”
La Noche looks away in pain, “yes….he….” She sighs, “he was going to court me…” Lord Sanchez turns to look at La Noche, he immediately knew who she was talking about, his other brother, Xibalba. He heard how it went, Xibalba left her for her twin sister. Lord Sanchez surprisingly relates to La Noche, he floats down back on the ground and walks over to her. “yes, that is heartbreaking…..” La Noche starts to tear up again, “do you still love him?” He asks, she wipes away her tears and looks at him, Lord Sanchez is now looking up at her with empathy. “yes…more than anything….” She says as she hugs her arms, about to tear up once again. Lord Sanchez hums in sympathy, then immediately turns away from La Noche, “well then….we must show them that we’re the ones in control” he grins menacingly again, “all of them…”
