a/n: i said an hour ago the lucas chapter would be next but apparently i’m a liar, i wrote this instead of studying, divider from @/cursed-carmine

Boys do very weird things for girls on TV. They stand outside in the rain, sing dramatic love songs, and buy out entire flower shops. El likes and doesn’t like the TV, Hopper says this is a “love-hate” relationship.

All those things are very sweet and she’s sure the boys mean well, but they’re also… too much, too much love. There isn’t a word for too much love, but maybe that’s because when there’s too much of it, it doesn’t feel like love.

Dustin complains about getting points off on math tests for not showing his work on basic math. Maybe that’s what it is, if it’s something basic that everyone already knows, why show it?

El is starting to have a love-hate relationship with the word “maybe.”

She decides that love is easier to understand when she’s watching it instead of thinking about it.

Right now she’s sitting cross-legged on the floor of the cabin with a paper plate in her lap and music playing too loud. Will is sitting next to her, setting up his paints and the canvases he brought to teach her “blending.”

He makes pretty paintings where the sky looks whole. When she paints the sunset it just looks like lines of pink, yellow, and orange. Maybe Hopper will put it on the fridge when Will is done teaching her, Mrs. Byers puts Will’s there.

Max and Lucas are arguing over the rules of some card game. Dustin is off to the side with Mike, trying and failing to teach him a trick to shuffling cards in a way that looks fancy.

You and Steve are here too, you’re supposed to be babysitting but Steve is doing a much better job than you. He’s got an arm around you while he eyes Max and Lucas’s argument, waiting to see if he needs to step in.

Meanwhile you’re curled up next to him on the couch under a blanket, chewing your pencil in thought as you work on a crossword puzzle in the newspaper. El tried a crossword puzzle once, people on TV said it’s good for her brain, but it just made her head hurt.

“Baseball rookie of the year in 1983, or a common fruit?” you furrow your brow as you read the clue out to Steve.

“1983…” Steve mumbles in thought, he unwraps his arm from around you to dig his nail into the skin of the tangerine he had in his other hand.

You frown a little and lean more into his side. Steve smiles and turns to kiss the top of your head.

“Oh it was Darryl Strawberry,” Steve unwraps the skin of the tangerine and lets it fall into his lap. “Answer is probably just his last name.”

“His last name is ‘Strawberry?’” you repeat in disbelief, as he splits the tangerine in half.

“Yeah I thought it was funny too when I first heard it,” Steve snorts, he breaks off a slice from one of the halves and starts to peel the white fuzzies off it.

You wrinkle your nose at the slice in his hand. “You didn’t buy the seedless ones?”

“You’re a baby.”

“It’s a texture thing.”

“You’re still a baby.”

Steve lifts the slice up to your mouth and feeds it to you. You chew it and he leans over to grab a napkin from the coffee table. You spend another few seconds swishing the fruit around your mouth so you don’t accidentally swallow the seed.

Steve wordlessly brings the napkin to your lips and you spit the seed out. His eyes crinkle with a smile when drool catches on your lip and wipes it with his thumb.

You go back to your crossword and he licks his thumb clean then pats it dry with the napkin. He places the napkin back on the coffee table and snaps off another slice of tangerine, peeling the white fuzzies again.

El’s tummy feels warm and she only looks away from you two when Will asks what she wants to paint.
