Yuuri either did exceptionally well or exceptionally bad. He had none of an élite skater’s calculating edge—that pragmatic voice reminding him to pull his best moves until the final, to compromise a long-shot road to gold for a sure path to bronze. Had he known restraint, Celestino could have turned him into a medallist, but he never would have worn gold.

When he was younger, Yuri had appreciated the daring of his name-sharer. What was the point of the sport if you were always pulling back for fear of reprisal? He already had enough headaches compromising all the wasted expectations of a normal life for what he was given. All or nothing, he would think in competition, launching himself into a jump too advanced for his age set. Yuri knew, for all Yakov's statements to the contrary, that his daring was what enraptured Yakov and those federation officials, was what compelled them to give him access to resources far above his family's means.

For all his protestations of being Yuuri’s coach, Viktor also found his guilelessness endearing. The next photo was of Viktor tugging Yuuri up to the first place podium. The one after that was the two of them kissing. Standing a tier below them, JJ had his arms stubbornly crossed into the “JJ-style” pose, but his expression was harried. Just for that expression, Yuri kept the news article of the medal ceremony open.

A wonderfully and thoughtfully constructed fic of where thing might go post series one, it balances all these amazing elements of dealing with the way growing up often feels like a betrayal from your own body, the way that every emotion feels heightened and dramatized. There’s also a very nice (and wonderfully savage) shout out to real life figure skating at the 2016 GPF in Marseilles.

I'm doing this with anon off because I still consider "In the Garden of the Commendatore" to be the best Inception fic I've ever read... so, question is, what do you think would have happened had Ariadne not accepted the job extracting from Robert? And do you think Ariadne will ever get out of dreamshare? The story ends so tragically because it feels like right as Ariadne realizes how terrible mindcrime is... she's shuttled back in.

That’s so cool. I appreciate that you came off of anon (not that there’s anything wrong with that). And thank you so much for telling me you feel that way about my fic. ❤❤❤ Forgive me for taking a minute to answer. I wanted to really think about the answer, and then I got distracted by the terrible happenings in my current fandoms. X)

1. Could Ariadne ever give up dream share? The simple answer is: only if she had something more compelling in real life to focus on. The real-world work could never be as “exciting” as the unlimited possibilities of imagination, but the imaginary could never be as satisfying as real, solid accomplishment. Could she give up mind crime? Easily. But I’m not sure that she would feel as guilty participating in an extraction as she would in another inception. In fact, I’d say she’s completely done with inception by the end of the fic. But could Arthur talk her into another, more straightforward extraction? For simple profit from a similarly unethical business tycoon? Maybe lol.

2. What do I think would have happened had Ariadne not accepted the job extracting from Robert? As in, do I think they could have ended up together in a natural way while she was working at his company? I think Robert and Ariadne were pretty much doomed from go, considering the way they “met.” For Ariadne, that crime/guilt was always going to get in the way and make her push Robert away. For her, there would always be the endless cycle of: “Do you really love me? Or do you just think you do? Does it really matter? Of course it does! But does it? Do I deserve this? Does he? Again: does it matter if we both want it and the damage is already done?” Always is the issue of consent. Can Robert really want/consent to something he was conditioned to want in the first place? I suppose the guilt wouldn’t have been as bad if she had refused to participate in the subsequent extraction/inceptions on him, which definitely escalated his feelings for her, but there would still always be the first crime and the manipulation that put them together on the tower project in the first place. She would always feel responsible for him.

That said, I think their shared passion over the tower project would have further bonded them (as it did in the fic), and Robert probably would have fallen in love eventually anyway. The difference would have been that the whole thing would have been more natural and less… desperate? She had the advantage of already being in his subconscious from the original inception, but I think that was just the foundation of what eventually became a real attraction/affection on his part as they worked together.

All the aforesaid ultimately amounting to a genuinely tragic love story. :)

5. What will things be like for the characters 10 years after the main events.

Ohhh, man. Dany would be 10; Viserys 17, and they would have grown up with their mother in Dorne. In this fic, Rhaella knows that somewhere, far off in Winterfell, she’s got another grandchild who the world thinks is Ned Stark’s bastard, but I honestly doubt she’d even attempt to reach out.

Of course, the elephant in the room is Robert. If Rhaella is still alive, House Targaryen remains a threat, so the obvious way to neutralize that threat would be to marry her to someone harmless and find a way to get her children under the crown’s control (which of course she would never allow). And since she made it to Dorne, the likelihood of her marrying anyone outside of Dorne is pretty low--I doubt she’d trust anyone else, for a start. Oberyn/Rhaella would be a pretty crazy crack pairing in most universes, but in this one, it might actually make sense. Rhaella has no interest in additional children and Oberyn has Ellaria. So, maybe.

I do think that, unlike in Brittle Glory, Viserys would be a better-adjusted young man with his mother’s influence. He would probably still be betrothed to Arianne Martell, and likely close to the point at which they would marry. As for Dany, her childhood would be dramatically different with her mother around, and a reasonably stable household situation. The fic did include Rhaella having a prophetic dream toward the end, so it’s not impossible that the dragon eggs still turn up. Now, whether or not Dany will be in a position to hatch them is an entirely different question--on the one hand, she’s the prophesied one, but on the other hand, prophecies are dodgy, so...I don’t know.
