Buffy Summers (BTVS): mi chica, one of the first tv shows I watched and one of the first characters I fell truly and deeply in love. Buffy will always always be in my heart.

Olivia Dunham (Fringe): Okay, I don’t think I need to explain this any further at this point, so just have this awesome gif of Olivia.

Kate Austen (Lost): I mean, Lost is not only the reason I actually started watching tv shows in english with subtitles and started searching for things on the internet and everything (which means without Lost I literally wouldn’t be the person I am today ????), Kate was also one of the first characters I felt the need to defend constantly. So yeah, even though she was probably very poorly written, specially with the passing of the seasons, I will always have a lot of love for her.

Veronica Mars (VM): What? You’re asking why? Here, sweet summer child.

Elizabeth Bennet (Pride & Prejudice): Not only P&P was one of my first “classics”, she is the girl a lot of us identify ourselves with. Yes, it’s a bit of a cliché, but I don’t even care. Elizabeth Bennet will always be in my heart.

Hermione Granger (Harry Potter): She is the brightest witch of her age.

Ellie (The Last of Us): This one is probably the most recent one, but really. We’re talking about my favorite video game, one hell of a story line, and the girl who says more curse words per minute. And I will always love this girl so fucking much.

It works okay. Sometimes, whatever you buy takes more than they say to arrive, but usually it's really fast and in my experience it has never arrived broken or anything.

Hello! I hope I'm not bothering you, but I've just read your "about" and I'm so impressed. I'm in my first year of college, and I'm studying journalism and audiovisual communication (like a cinema degree), but I'm so scared of the future. Could you please give me any advice? Thank you so much.

Hey! I’ve been procrastinating answering all the stuff in my inbox for some reason so I’m soooo sorry this took a while. No bother at all. Even in the slightest! I’m humbled you’d come to me for advice and my ask is always open if you need anything. 

I don’t think I’ve “made it” by any standards, but whatever success I have had this far in my career and the cool jobs in big studio movies I’ve gotten to do comes down to one thing, networking. If there is something that everyone in film and TV will agree on across the board is that success in this industry is 3% talent, 97% who you know. I was lucky enough to go to one of the top three film schools in the US/one of the top ten in the world so I’ll admit I already had a head start by the time I graduated because of the prestige that comes with being an alumna from my alma mater.  I didn’t rely solely on that though. Even then, while I was in school I joined every club, crewed every movie, did every extra curricular activity, and went to every party I could. Our professors/alumni have created some of the biggest shows on television and I got to be in classrooms with them and worked my ass off to impress them leading to several letters of recommendations. Great thing to have coming out of college. Our school had a lot of “industry brats”, aka the kids of film professionals/agents/actors, so eventually I became friends with some of those people and that made getting my foot into this super cliquey industry much easier. In summary, rule #1, always meet new people and always aim for those new people to be the right kind people with the right kind of connections. 

I think the next big thing is always create new content.

On your days off, shoot. In between scenes at work, shoot. If you’re sleepy, shoot. It doesn’t matter what you’re doing, always be coming up with new stuff. Find a group of people who are down to give up their Sundays to go down to the desert and shoot a short film. Then edit it, submit it to festivals, and win awards…and network at the festival. It always goes back to networking. The more content you create, the more you can put out there, the more people you meet. 

To not make it too long, I think the last vital point is all about the personal toll this career takes on you. Film is a great but VERY demanding career so I think my main advice is make sure you really love it before you commit to it. This job is not even close to being a 9-5. It’s long hours that can be just as fun as they are stressful. It’ll screw up your social life because when you have that month when you’re on set every day for 12-18 hours a day, you really just want to go home and sleep before you do it all over again in a few hours. You’ll forget to text people back and they’ll get mad. If you’re dating someone outside of the industry they just won’t get why you have to be gone all night sometimes. They won’t get that you’re going to be on call 24/7 if you’re in the middle of production and that yes, I do need to reply to that email right now while we’re at dinner. I think the consensus between my friends and I is that you need to date someone within the industry because they’re the only ones who get how crazy our lives can be, but then again everyone in the industry is insane…double edged sword lol. Then if you’re a freelancer, it gets twice as stressful. You’ll have months where you get offered 9 jobs that overlap, and then there’s the three month dry spell where you can’t be afraid to eat shit and not be able to go out because you’re too broke so your social life is screwed again. Like I said, you really gotta love this.
