Trying to come up with a mermaid au for mermay.
I have a few concepts, though not VERY many actual storyline details on any of them.
1 — Mermaid Eliote x Human Allets
In a world where mermaids are of the less classically pretty and slightly more fricked up looking kind, Eliote’s parents were killed by mer and by some magical accident she was subsequently turned into one and HATES it.
Allets, meanwhile, is a princess who’s always been drawn to the ocean much to her parents disapproval. They don’t want her getting covered in sand at the beach, they don’t want her splashing around in the water, and they DEFINITELY do not like all the deep deep deep sea creatures she’s fascinated by. For some reason or another she and her parents wind up sailing somewhere, and somehow or other she winds up overboard and having to be saved from drowning by Eliote.
Eliote’s reason for not singing in this AU is due to the whole mer-use-their-singing-to-entrance-people-so-as-to-then-drown-them-to-death thing. Maybe she doesn’t want to unintentionally wind up doing anything like that, maybe it’s just too strong of an association. In any case Allie convinces her out of it eventually.
It turns out at some point, Allets’s parents were not able to conceive an heir naturally, so they turned to some magic that so happened to be ocean-related, hence why Allets turned out like she did with this soul-deep calling to the depths of the ocean.
By the end of the story, Eliote winds up finding some appreciation for being a mer but still wants to be human again and she gets some way of switching back and forth. Allets meanwhile gets to be fully turned into a mer and is much happier that way, like, she was always meant to be one really.
2 — Mermaid Allets x Human Eliote
In this world mer can be the classically pretty kind OR more fricked up or out there (including ones whose bottom halves are other sea creatures) but those that are more fricked up and/or out there are very much outside of or on the fringes of mer society / the mer kingdom that Allie’s parents in this AU are the rulers of.
Allie is very curious about the surface world and humans despite her parents believing them to be inferior.
Eliote’s parents were killed by mer. Ever since, she’s been either staying firmly on land or making it her life’s mission to hunt and kill mer I haven’t decided yet. But then there’s Allie.
Later on in-story, by some magic that brings out your truest self or whatever, Allets gets to be turned into a more fricked up kind of mer, with more inhuman eyes and sharper teeth and webbed hands and murky green skin and a tail to match.
Jewel is a mermaid — on the classically pretty end of the spectrum, though particularly colorful — who gets captured and taken to land, and somehow or other winds up with legs, and needs so so bad to get back to the ocean. She finds the others on the way of that.
I still need to come up with where the rest of the squad is in this AU. I think Luna is like, a kind half-mer hybrid or something? Still orphaned as a baby and taken in by a human couple and everything.
I’ll try to come up with more details.
