Groups of queer people I think Shane would feel at home in:
- Finance gays, I'm talking Wall Street homosexuals that will financially destroy someones life at a dinner and then tut about how bottom prep will take extra time tonight because they ate a steak
- a group of self conscious trans women that are passive aggressive about how well they and everyone around them passes. I think the layers upon layers of psychological torment would feel just like home for him
- farmhands and ranchers. Will not elaborate
- any Californian queer person that shops at erewhon and works out at equinox
- in the same vein as the previous one, gay gym bros that cruise at equinox. Any gay gym bro tbh. They would bond over meal prep and feeling most comfortable in your own body when it is a tool you can wield
- bisexual women that stan kpop and take it as seriously as a full time job. Like yes you're right Cheyenne blackpink has been lacking cohesion since debut
- any lesbians overly invested in professional sports. The more seriously they take it and the more studs/butches/futches the better.
- horse girls. While not inherently queer he feels a kindred spirit because if hollanov were a horse movie Ilya would of course be the horse. Many people are saying this already but it bears repeating
- gay people with a degree in literature that judge the fuck out of everyone around them in a cafe
Anyways hope you enjoy my tedtalk. To conclude Shane does not hate gay people and canonically is interested in engaging more with the queer community but is worried about being an outsider & you guys are weird to imply he would be hateful when he has not indicated anything of the sort

I believe this goes by stages, for me. This man is NOT comfortable outside of the very limited types of people he knows, but then we can see when he meets Rose that it's not because of a lack of interest in hanging out with different types. He's just unmoored, out of his comfort zone, and anxious.
I think jocky lesbians would be the exact type of queer people who would get him to open up and loosen up quickly and painlessly, but after that it's just time
Maybe when he's still a competitive hockey player he doesn't have that much time to be meeting people and exploring, but well, for me as soon as he's out he's going to be working on learning more about queer culture (and he's going to be weird about it) and when he retires he's going to have so much fucking time!
I think some of these are fun to picture canon Shane interacting with (passive aggressive judgemental dolls for example)
But most of these are fun just to picture a canon divergence au where he just makes one random weird friend while exploring a city he's playing an away game in, and it changes the trajectory of canon forever
For example? I want to read Shane Hollander having three games in the New York Area (where there is three teams) in the same week and how he would use his free time doing his version of sightseeing...
That is, booking a super expensive half day tour of New York shit which some random Wall Street gay is taking his visiting foreign client on.
They end up in some ridiculously expensive rooftop restaurant overlooking central park and as soon as the client is gone they hit it off complaining.
This is heaven to picture, all of these :) I want to write/read all these interactions lol
