Book Review: The Moorchild by Eloise McGraw
★★★★★
Poor unblessed creature, it may be that she has no more wish to be here than we have wish to have her... Does she yearn, as one of us might, for her heathenish home? Does she even remember a place where she once belonged? Did she never belong, even there?
The Moorchild is a beautiful book. It centers on Saaski/Moql'nkkn, a Moorfolk changeling whose half-Folk half-human parentage leads to her being swapped with a human baby in the cradle. Growing up, she strives to connect with her human surroundings, only to fail miserably as the community ostracizes her and her increasingly strange ways.
Saaski is such a wonderful protagonist - she's fiercely herself and never means ill to anyone. If she had her choice, she'd be like the others; but even being different, she always tries to help those who care for her. She's just constantly caught up in the wrong situation and never fails to be scapegoated. I love her so much - she deserves all the happiness in the world!
A tale of outsiders and finding where you belong, The Moorchild is a lovely, powerful story that deserves the most praise.
