I've never been personal about myself here, but I feel like I need to say this.
I have spent my entire life in the city of El Paso, TX. It's not a large city by any means, but it's been growing in recent years. We have sister cities to our North and South, a unique economy spanning 3 cities, 2 countries, and 2 U.S states.
El Paso is also home to a military base, so our mostly Hispanic demographic is mixed with people who have been stationed and settled from all parts of the country. Despite what outsiders would have you think (despite what our president would have you think), it's not dangerous here; a small robbery here, a minor bar fight there, but nothing major, nothing this heart wrenching and terrible.
El Paso has consistently ranked as one of the safest cities in the country. I have spent all this time watching atrocities like these through a screen, never imagining that it could happen here. But now, this city nestled between mountains has had blood soaked into her ground.
The streets are quite, businesses and public gathering places are empty, the people of this community are somber, and life has changed dramatically for us in such a short time.
Many people will never have to know the terrible fear that comes with frantically messaging/calling friends and family, and not hearing back right away. I have a family member who works in that Walmart, who we have yet to hear from. There are many others like us across the city, who have someone missing, who have someone injured,
who have someone dead.
I almost want to believe that this is just a bad dream. That I'll wake up to our everyday peaceful life, but that won't happen. The fact remains that man drove here for many hours just to shoot at the people of my hometown. He shot at us because of the color of our skin, the languages we speak, and because of where we came from.
I know we'll be okay. One day we'll be okay. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, perhaps not even next week, but one day we will. Because our community is strong, because this city and it's people are resilient, because we have an overwhelming amount of support from within and beyond it's limits.
The day will come when the city of El Paso will be okay again, because we are El Paso Strong.
I will never forget the amount of tears and blood shed one year ago in my beautiful city. It was one the hardest day of my life. We lost 23 beautiful souls 23 peoples’ lives were cut short. All because of xenophobia against my beautiful Latinx community. We will never forget these beautiful people and will hold them in our hearts forever. I remember waking up on the morning of the shooting and my heart breaking. The dead bodies on my TL. My friends who were at the mall next to the site of the shooting. I will never forget the pain and trauma my city had to endure. We are #ElPasoStrong forever 🖤🇲🇽

I woke up today and excitingly checked my phone wanting to see some more pictures of @taylorswift and fans at the Secret sessions last night. But as I scrolled Through my newsfeed my heart dropped as I heard about yet another mass shooting. It seems like I just heard about a mass shooting... which I did 6 days ago. It feels like this is a new “normal” in all of our lives. To think that a shooting could happen anywhere/ any place is so crazy to me. I always heard about mass shootings but I never in a million years thought it would happen to me. And now every time I hear about another mass shooting... it just hits so freaking close to home. It brings back all the emotions. It brings back all the fears. After route 91 (Vegas mass shooting) I swore I couldn’t go to a concert again. I swore I couldn’t be around lots of people again.
But somehow I did that Reputation Tour 22 freaking times. And honestly I was scared. I was so freaking scared. And admitting that is so hard for me because I tried so hard to put on a brave face. Knowing that this shooting happened at a freaking WALMART. Like what??? I can’t stop thinking about the Walmart employees AT WORK when the shooting happened. Or the families who were at Walmart back to school shopping. Or the ones who got shot. The ones who watched others get shot. Or the family and friends at home who are about to find out that their friend was at Walmart when they were killed.
These people are going to be effected by this for the rest of their lives. And unlike me,who could chose whether or not I wanted to attend a concert again.. the Walmart workers will eventually have to go back to work and the children will eventually have to go back to school. And knowing first hand the fear that they will carry with them just breaks my heart💔( ps. I feel weird posting this pic of me smiling on tour with this caption- I just didn’t know what pic to post, posting about my thoughts and feelings help me “talk” my way through my emotions- and I know this is just my fan account but you all get me-thanks for hearing me) @taylorswift @taylornation
