ELST Intro

genre: high fantasy ~ coming-of-age

GENERAL

Can four unprepared teenagers save their city from a war that’s been in motion for decades before their birth? Probably not. Can they be the catalyst for starting that war? Oh, absolutely.

None of our teenagers are prophesied to save the world, all they know is that they’re surrounded by giants who, at first glance, seem unbeatable. Fortunately for them, they’ll get to experience the saying “the bigger they are the harder they fall” first hand. Unfortunately for them, the saying leaves out one important detail: that the bigger they are, the more damage their fall will cause, too.

Setting, Characters, Plot and Theme under cut:

SETTING

The story takes place on another planet, called Elst, which is the satellite of a bigger planet that’s orbiting two suns. While our characters will travel a lot throughout their lives, they will always come back to the one place they call home, which is the capital city Senecens, in the country of Allium, situated at the Nord-West of the middle continent.

Senecens is a lively city nowadays, but it hasn’t always been this way. It was only a mere 30 years ago that a brutal war involving Allium and plenty of other Human countries has ended, with their loss. This loss forced them to yield part of their legal control over to Ophi, a half-human half-snake species they’ve been at odds with since the beginning of time.

Ophi passed a law that changed their countries’ language from its previous French to English, as well as made them accept more Ophi into their countries. While nowadays people have gotten used to Senecens being a hub of different species and cultures, there are those who still secretly wish to turn back the clock and get a rematch.

CHARACTERS

Out friendly bunch is a group of teenagers from all walks of life: a skilled fighter who’s been preparing for years to carry on her family’s tradition, a poor boy who was taken in by a society of demigods, a young man who is too used to depending on other people, as well as a mysterious teen who seems too soft to have survived this far.

CAYN

Cayn grew up fairly isolated from other people due to his family trying to protect him. While his family’s intentions were good, they proved detrimental to his health, as they refused to look past their preconceived notions to try and understand him. The only person who actually made an effort to listen to him was his younger brother, Adélard, and the two of them soon grew inseparable.

But what happens when Adélard gets a serious injury while he is trying to protect his brother?

DESTA

Desta has been many people through the years: a naive friend, a helpful brother, as well as a hardened spy. He holds no alliances, except towards one person: his father, who he’s been trying to appease for years.

Unfortunately, the more time passes, a horrifying thought starts taking root in Desta’s mind. That maybe his father will never accept him, regardless of everything he’s sacrificed.

ELENI

Eleni knew who she was going to be before she was even born: a chance for her family to prove to their clan that they aren’t a failure. With three older siblings who all refused to carry on their parents’ wishes, Eleni is determined to be the golden child.

It isn’t only until she meets people from outside her clan that she realises life is supposed to be enjoyable. After much turmoil, Eleni starts considering a sin greater than that of any of her siblings: changing her magic class.

SIDRI

Sidri grew up on a farm, in a poor but happy family. At least, that’s what he thinks happened, because after joining a group of religious demigods his memories started getting quite blurry. Maybe it’s because he joined their ranks later, or because he’s naturally rebellious, but Sidri was never able to follow any of their rules. Soon after, this behaviour showed him a side of the group that nobody else could see.

Even though he was destined to one day be part of the group’s leaders, he turned his back on it and ran away. Hopefully, this time it would be for good.

PLOT

The four characters meet in some unlikely circumstances, only to find out that they’re going to be in a classroom together. Despite their differences, they start being drawn to one another, and they end up engaging in plenty of shenanigans all while the world is starting to fall apart around them.

THEME

This story is about how no matter what type of rock bottom you’ve hit, no matter how many people abandon you or what horrible mistake you’ve made, you can always come back from it. All it takes is determination, a smidge of faith, and accepting that arms can also be for hugging.
