Hey, hi, hello. I didn't play enough otomes to make a favorites lists for 2025 (I am hoping to play more in 2026!), but I did read like...180+ volumes of manga, most being shoujo/josei reads. I read some really great ones, and while some of these are still ongoing, I'm still talking about them because they're great and I loved them.
With that said, let's get started!
5. Ore to Mo Ichido, Hatsukoi by Hasegaki Narumi
LISTEN, objectively, I recognize the pacing of this was fast and that the ending wasn't the most satisfying, but there was just something about the vibes of this manga that really drew me in. I like a reverse harem where all the guys are given equal weight and it doesn't feel obvious who the lead is going to end up with (and the fact she didn't end up with who lowkey felt the most obvious was kind of a plus). The main plot about our girl trying to figure out who she was in love with before she suddenly lost her memories isn't revolutionary, but the characters were written with such a specific type of tenderness that I ended up enjoying it a lot.
4. Penguin Revolution by Tsukuba Sakura
This would have been an all-time favorite shoujo series in another timeline, where it had never been cancelled. I mourn for that timeline-
This is an idol/model story about a girl who can sense the talent people have, as that talent takes the shapes of wings on the person's back. Through a series of events, she becomes a manager to a boy trying to debut in the industry. And I loved every second of it (until the end, where it's immediately obvious it was cancelled and I am very much upset by it, can you tell?).
The examination of what talent is, how to nurture it, the different forms it takes, and how it's a mix of hard work and being in a healthy emotional state was just so good. I loved everything this had to say about art and passion. I don't even like idol stories or anything to do with famous people, but there was just so much here thematically I resonated with. This was also an older series, it came out around the mid-2000s, and so it was all wrapped up in a nostalgic bow.
3. Last Quarter by Ai Yazawa
If I may be so honest, I...don't like Nana lol. In fact, I'm not really the biggest fan of Ai Yazawa. But there was just something about this series in particular that worked for me.
So you follow a group of elementary school kids who are trying to help a girl who is a ghost (but also not a ghost), try to remember who she is and get information on her lost love to help her be free from the current state she's in.
I think the emotional draw that people talk about in Ai Yazawa's other works was finally present for me in this one. I know this is a more unpopular one of her series, but I actually really like kids solving mysteries a lot. It's always very fun, and it being broken up between the hazy memories of the ghost their trying to help creates a nice ebb and flow of brighter moments and somber ones. It also made the emotional moments more impactful, and there are some scenes that have stuck with me vividly, despite having read this in the beginning of the year.
2. Pizzicato no Nemuru Mori by Yukimura Alto
Do you want something so soft and cozy it feels like a warm hug? Because this is it. I loved this so much, I honestly thought it was going to be my favorite read for the year.
It follows Emilie who has sorta run away from home to her great-great-grandfather's old cottage in the countryside. While she's there, she meets the house spirits who live there, as well as boy who has also run away from home. Together, the two of them learn about the history of the cottage as well as more about each other.
This will pop up in my honorable mentions, but I love reading about musicians and learning to love music despite all the other complicated emotions around it. Emilie's journey with her piano playing it running parallel with her growth as a person is so lovely to witness. I also loved her friendship and hint of a romance with Shura. They have such a soft dynamic, and have such a gentle and understated support of each other that's really sweet. Since we got Collette Decides to Die in English by this mangaka, I'm hoping there is a chance we get an official license for this one as well because I would kill to own physical copies.
1.Angel Sanctuary by Kaori Yuki
This is an insane pick for number one, and I feel like I need to give a million content warnings for it because this series has it all, but it's so cool??
This is about a boy who is a reincarnation of angel. And that angel waged a war against heaven, which left her cursed to be reborn as a human for all eternity. Setsuna is that current reincarnation, although he doesn't know it yet.
If you know anything about this, you've probably heard of the incest, and it's like a major part of this. I'm a big fan of gothic fiction in general, so it didn't exactly bother me, but I know that's a major 'no' for people, so here's the warning. With that said, I love 90s animanga aesthetic and its obsession with technology as horror and gore. I love all the weird religious themes and criticisms going on. I love how visceral and detailed the art was (and also how stunning it was, too).
There's a lot going on in this story, and it did take a few rereads to fully digest what exactly was happening, but once I reread the first few volumes again, I was locked in. I know neither of these games are well known or popular but it reminded me of the JRPGs "Baroque" and "deSpiria." The angelic horror and the feeling of despair between all three of these are really similar. It's so well done, and also a wild ride. If you don't mind the content warnings in this and like weird things like I do, please give this a read if you haven't yet. I fully understand why it's a classic now.
Honorable Mentions
Green Yuri aka The Guy she was Interested in Wasn't a Guy at All by Arai Sumiko
I don't know what to say about this that hasn't already been said. The bright green visuals are striking and really draws you in, and I can see why this got so popular based on the art alone. The story itself is a standard slice of life romance, but the leads are well written and really bring this manga to life. I just had a fun time reading it, and I'll probably continue having fun with it in the future.
La Corda d'Oro by Kure Yuki
This was a reread but I have to put it in here (and I've never talked about it on the blog, so it gets a pass). I just really love a girl falling in love with music and experiencing all the complicated feelings from wanting to do well by the art form you love and thinking you're not good enough. As someone who played the flute a lot when I was younger, then fell off, rereading this and watching Hino fall in love with the Violin really inspired me to get back into music myself. It's such a comforting, cozy series, and I adore it to this day.
Tenshi Dattara, Yokatta by Yuri Nakagawa
This was also a reread, and tbh I might have talked about this one before, but I'll do it again! This is honestly my favorite short shoujo manga series I've ever read. It's only three volumes, and follows a tangle of complicated friendships and romances. I love the characters in this, and seeing an emotionally abusive friendship depicted with so much weight behind it isn't the most common thing. I also love the ML and how much of a mess he is. The whole thing is just such a fascinating character study to me of these four teens and the unstable mental state they're all in. It manages to depict them so well considering how short the series is. I desperately wish this had an official release in English so I could own it and reread forever.
Hello and welcome to the list I said I’d make like two weeks ago and used to procrastinate doing both edits to sacrificial and messaging a client back about plot stuff!! Because I have a job now and I’m still adjusting to the fact that I’m an adult even now after all these years!!
It’s been a fucking YEAR. Even like for myself personally, like this year’s just been fucking nuts. And yet somehow I found the time to do an immense amount of reading. I keep track of books I read, and well, to make myself feel better about how few books I read this year (and last), I started keeping track of fics I read that were longer than 50k. After all, 50k is what NaNoWriMo calls a novel, so why can’t I? With that in mind, it looks like I read some 60 books this year, most of them booklength fics. Of course, the list I keep is not exhaustive, thought I like to think it’s still pretty thorough. This year saw me starting to peak into other fandoms and read within them on ao3, and it also saw me return to commercial romance in the form of the Bridgerton Novels. There were things that I started and took to long to decide I didn’t like, there were things that I started a few times and finally decided I loved, and then there were things that I finished and allowed to haunt me for days after, when I couldn’t find anything that could compare.
The list below is a selection of my favorites. All of them are works that qualified for a spot my personal “completed reads” list, so that means that, whether they’re finished or not, they hit roughly 50k (or were close enough for me to say it counted). There are only ten because I had to arbitrarily pick a number to limit myself to, otherwise I would be here just listing things for the rest of eternity. Also note that there’s a lot of mxm on the list! On this blog, we are friendly to member x member fics, and if you have a problem with that, you can see yourself out. There’s so little I won’t read that after a certain point, it seemed silly to rule out some tremendous and beautiful stories just because I was worried about people being earnest Twitter shippers. The same accusations of delusional thinking can be easily leveled at those who read and write member x reader fics. In the end, the intent with which something was rendered matters more.
Anyway, that is all to sat that when I love something, I really deeply love it, and I will attempt to scream at anyone who’ll listen to me to read it. Consider this me, screaming at you with love. Happy reading <3

Read for a truly perfect Jimin depiction, awkward and lovable Namjoon, metaphors threaded throughout that truly add to the story while being built upon in all the right ways, moments between two people falling for each other that I just think about all the fucking time.

Welcome back to that time of the year where I actually put out a recommendation list. This time is for fantasy shoujo and josei series! I decided not to do repeats, so any mentioned in my personal favorites list aren't here. I also didn't want to talk about the Big Ones that are always mentioned (like Yona of the Dawn, or Snow White with the Red Hair), since I want to put the spotlight on series that are a little less talked about. With all that said, let's hop to it!
RG Veda
If I can get away with reccing a CLAMP series, I fear I will. This was CLAMP's first ever series, and I came across it randomly in the library one day and was enamored. It's a tragedy following a boy who will bring about the end of the man who decides to take care of him anyway. This very much reads like 80s/90s fantasy, which might make some of the world-building aspects hard to get into at first, but man, I loved this. I loved the characters, the journey, the world. And I certainly love anything that can make me cry lmaO I'm also just biased for CLAMP art, everything they draw is stunning, and there were times this felt more like an art book than just a manga.
QQ Sweeper/Queen's Quality
This a fantasy action series about "Sweepers" who go into people's souls and 'clean' them of their fears, doubts, and anxieties. There's a lot more going on, but it feels a bit like spoilers to go into since the original three volumes don't really touch on it, but know this goes to some really fascinating places lore and character wise. The whole concept of this is oddly comforting to me. Plus I love the main character so much, she's everything to me. The core romance also has a comforting quality to it, which I think is what makes me feel oddly at ease reading this even when the story itself is high stakes. I really enjoyed this one, and I'm sad it's about to be over in a few more chapters. You'll also need to read QQ Sweeper before you read Queen's Quality, as a head's up!
Requiem of the Rose King
This is a "retelling" of the War of Roses which occurred in England in the 13th century. And by retelling, I mean in true animanga nonsense, Aya Kanno takes the name and places and does whatever they want with them for the story. You follow Prince Richard, whose on a quest to kill King Richard, become king himself, while also struggling with his body. This has so many content warnings (gore, SA, child abuse, and interphobia being the major ones), and it's an incredibly dark story, seeing as I'd describe it as a tragedy. (Sorry there are two fantasy tragedies on this list, can you tell my tastes lol). I really enjoyed following Richard and just seeing him slowly break down and become a worse version of himself, but also wishing for hope and peace, as well as his...complicated relationship with King Henry. I also would like to add the caveat that Richard is intersex and I'm not sure how well or not well that was handled (and I haven't really found anyone who is intersex commenting on it), but it was a pleasant surprise to see that representation at all, as well! (Also as a warning, don't watch the anime. The manga is fantastic, the anime is........not.)
From Far Away
Another classic from the 90s. This follows a girl who dies and is isekai'd to another world. However, in this world everyone is hunting down "The Awakening" as it will summon a demon and bring the world to an end, and this girl is The Awakening, although she doesn't know it. This is just a solid series all around. It had the classic fantasy vibe I like, a solid romance, and a world I really enjoyed reading about. I really liked the little details that were added into the story as well, which I've never seen in any other isekai stories (like the MC experiencing a language barrier, and needing to slowly learn the language of the place she's in). If you're in the mood for a classic 90s series, this one is for you!
Nina the Starry Bride
And finally, presenting the only josei on the list. Nina the Starry Bride is about a girl born with blue eyes, which marks her as being one of the "Star People." One day, the princess of her kingdom days, and she ends up kidnapped and forced to pretend to be the dead princess. This series goes in a lot of directions, and while I have my favorite and least favorite arcs, I think as a whole, this is a great series. I personally love a love triangle when the two sides of the love triangle represent specific themes in the story, and what the MC chooses mirrors the overarching message, and that's very much the vibes with the love triangle in this. I think the main draw to this series for me is the lore though. The more that's unraveled about the Star People and who they are, the more the story feels fleshed out and whole.
Since one (1) person mentioned they would like a recommendation list of shoujo and josei mangas, I decided to throw one together of my personal favorites! Some of these are well known, some aren't. I also kept it short, so it's more a sample of my tastes. Future lists will probably revolve around themes/genres, but for now here's this!
My Lovesick Life as a 90s Otaku
Demo: Josei
Genre: Romance, Slice-of-Life, Historical
This is a short four volume series about a middle aged mother who reflects back on her teen years and being a big otaku in the 90s. I honestly loved this? There were so many cameos of classic series, and I enjoyed the characters and themes in this a lot. It did make me cringe, just because it reminded me how me and my friends used to be as teens in all the good and bad ways. That relatability is also the reason I was a big fan. It does wrap up pretty quickly at the end, but for a short series, it's one of the josei series I've read that left an impression on me!
Magic Knight Rayearth
Demo: Shoujo
Genre: Fantasy, Isekai
It feels like a crime to not mention Clamp when talking about any of my favorite manga (Tsubasa Chronicles is my favorite Shonen and Chobits is my favorite Seinen, so they're really just winning). Choosing between this and RG Veda was difficult, but this is such a classic. I loved the characters, the world, and how the story reveals itself to be a gut punch at the end. If you still haven't read it, here's yet another rec post telling you to check it out.
Children of the Whales
Demo: Shoujo
Genre: Science Fantasy, Tragedy
This follows a group of people on a floating island, the Mud Whale, which is trapped in a sea of sand. One day, when they send people out to search one of the sunken islands in the sand for resources, they find another human, and through meeting her, learn the truth about their home.
The story telling in this is gorgeous. The mangaka said she was inspired by a lost journal she found, and you really get that feeling while reading it. This is also a series to read if you just feel like being Really Sad. It's one of my all time favorite series, but I did have to read it with breaks between volumes (for reference, I normally binge like five volumes a day when I'm really into a series). There's a rich world and history in this, and each detail feels so carefully considered and thought out. This is one of the series I wished more people talked about.
Dokuhime
Demo: Josei
Genre: Fantasy, Romance, Tragedy
A group of orphan girls are raised to be living weapons by consuming poison. They're then sent out to enemy countries to seduce and kill the men in charge, as their bodies are all poisonous.
This doesn't have any official English translations and I came across it randomly one day and just fell in love. It's an older series, and there's plenty of triggering content here (violence and SA being major). But I loved this world and characters so much? My summary does not do it justice, but the dynamics with the main character and the three princes in the country she's infiltrating is so interesting. It also reads very much like a dark fairy tale, especially with how it's structured and the way it goes through each scene and chapter. I know this is likely too old and unknown to ever get picked up officially, but maybe if I get more people to read it, we can all bother seven seas via their licensing survey or something-
A Condition Called Love
Demo: Shoujo
Genre: Romance, Slice-of-Life
I don't think this needs a summary since it's a recent popular one lol, but I love messy characters who face consequences for their messy actions and are forced to grow as people!! I love when bad habits in a relationship get challenged, and it doesn't automatically lead to breaking up but trying to fix things. Hotaru and Hananoi just have my favorite relationship in any modern shoujo series I've read, and while the series isn't over yet, I can imagine them remaining a favorite for a long time.
Chihayafuru
Demo: Josei
Genre: Sports, Slice-of-Life (and romance in the background)
If you know about Chihayafuru, it's that everyone who talks about it is Not Normal about it lol I have never encountered a series with such a large cast where each one is given such weight and brevity as this series. I know it's about such a niche Japanese sport, but listen, the growth and story arch of these three main characters, and how they're affected by the people they meet and how they affect others and grow is just...so good. You want God Tier character work, this is the series you read.
Prince Freya
Demo: Shoujo
Genre: Fantasy, Adventure (and romance if you squint)
I love brutal shoujo. The first chapter of this was not what I was expecting, and it's probably because I went in blind. Anyway, this follows the story of Freya who lives in a kingdom trying not to get conquered by an Empire taking over the continent. The only person keeping the kingdom standing was the Prince, who was poisoned and killed. Since Freya looks almost exactly like him, she's forced to pretend to be the Prince of this country in hopes the kingdom won't fall to the empire.
Freya's character growth in this is a lot of fun to witness play out. I also really have been enjoying seeing the way the world keeps expanding and growing with each volume. I will say, the first few volumes have pacing issues, but by volume 3/4 it was all smooth sailing. I also really enjoy how unflinching it can be, and it doesn't shy away from death or violence when needed, but it also doesn't overdue it either. It's just a solid shoujo fantasy series, and the only bad part about it is waiting for the next volume to drop (Viz it's been 6 months, please-).
It's that time again! Normally this list is just whatever I played in the year and not new releases, but uh, for once I pretty much only played new releases lol. I'm gonna be honest, I hardly remember what I played because it's been a Year for me. But looking back, these are what stood out!
Norn9 Last Era
Look, I felt the need to add Norn9 on here in some capacity because it was one of the first big otome titles I played way back in 2015. I've been wanting the fandisc ever since, and getting it felt like a dream come true. If you played Norn9 recently you might enjoy this less, but since it's been a hot minute since I last replayed the original I didn't mind the rehashing of the story through the boys' perspectives and I enjoyed seeing their lives after the events of everything! This also helped with my biggest issue of the OG game; world building. Things were filled out and plot holes fixed and overall, it was nice to be with the cast again!
Titan Arum
I'm not sure I would have found this game if I hadn't joined the Velox Fabula game jam, but I really enjoyed this! Ironically, I also read one of the main inspirations for this game (The King in Yellow) this year as well, so seeing it being referenced was really cool. If you've been here a while, you know horror otomes are some of my favorites and I'm glad to have another one to add to the list of otomes I love!
Intertwine
This was just a feel good game that had my whole heart. Van was a lovely character through all life times, and considering I played it during the Worst Part of the Year for me, it really helped get my mind off things! I also will never shut up about the GUI in this game, it's so beautifully designed and some of the best I've seen in a VN!
Jack Jeanne
Is anyone surprised by my number one lol I was yelling about it for the entire month of July, and it was my most played Switch game of 2023 as well! The characters were fully realized and didn't just feel like the usual archetypes, the art was beautiful, the stories were wonderful (including the stories of the plays), and the music slapped. This game was truly the It Game of the genre this year and for good reason! Kisa is also one of my new favorite protags, she was fantastic. I'm really glad we were able to get an English release for this!
It's been a hot minute since I've done a recommendation post but I am suddenly in the mood for another one! This one for otome/amare games with fall vibes! Some of these are demos, most are complete! Also if you have any requests, feel free to send an ask.

7'Scarlet

This game takes place over summer vacation, but it's also a horror which makes me want to place it here! It's also the only game on this list that isn't an indie title. Follow Ichiko as she ventures into a strange small town in search of her missing brother.
I'm going to be honest, my favorite part of this game is the art/design. The moving backgrounds are super pretty and all the color choices are really nice. Toa's also a sweetheart, and he made the whole game worth it. I know the PC port isn't great, but thankfully Aksys is bringing over the switch version in 2025 if you feel like waiting for that!
Titan Arum

You're a writer whose moved back into your old childhood home. Attempt to finish your novel and not lose your mind.
Honestly, one of my favorite indie otomes I've played. I love the art, the atmosphere, and where the game pulls inspiration from. The UI design is also gorgeous and one of my favorites to date. The three LIs are all very fun and distinct from each other, and seeing how the story unfolds in each of their paths was fun to discovery.
Under Your Moon

You're in a world where everyone has disappeared except for you. You've been alone for a long time now, until suddenly you're not alone. And this stranger might just hold the answer to why everyone in your world has all but vanished.
Is it cheating to do two games from (roughly) the same team? Maybe, but this and Titan Arum are so good and I feel like after Titan Arum, all their newer releases don't get talked about as much? The atmosphere and slow creeping dread this game has is incredible, and I was so invested in it.
X-note

My first otome I played and loved back in the olden days of 2011. I still come back to replay it and it still has a special place in my heart. A mystery otome about a psychic girl whose approached to help solve a series of murders. The atmosphere in this was great, and I love the main character Eri a lot as well as the love interests. It veers more into being sad then anything, and if you want that kind of vibe I highly recommend.
Halloween Otome

And finally we got a light-hearted entry! You get invited to a masquerade challenge where you have to stay in your Halloween costume and not have your identity revealed for two weeks, all while completing various challenges.
This feels like an indie otome classic, and the whole series just feels like comfort food? I have a soft spot for it after all these years, and I've personally been meaning to replay myself soon!
Delphine's Discovery

Delphine is a streamer who, in an attempt to save her family business, goes to investigate an old orphanage. There she meets a strange man and finds herself potentially stumbling upon a murder mystery instead. This was another game that just felt really nice and relaxing to play in the moment.
ITYH

Camille wants Osgoode to notice her, and when he does, everything goes wrong.
This is where we get into more severe horror themes, and I don't recommend this for everyone. With that said, I loved how absolutely wild the plot got and where some of the endings went. It felt like a fever dream, especially on top of all the awful things that happen leading up to the endings. It's such a ride, and it's definitely one of those games I still think about from time to time.
Memory Ghosts

This follows Clara as she starts community college and joins a paranormal club on campus with her childhood best friend. The paranormal club as an interest in the old humanities building Mariposa del Sol, and whatever seems to be haunting the building seems to have an interest in her.
This was the first game I ever made and released and while I've definitely improved since its release, I have a soft spot for it! It only takes about 3 or 4 hours to play through every route, so if you want something to kill time, check it out!
