You laid there, the only movement being the slow rise and fall of your chest. It was the first time in two months that you were sleeping without coughing up blood. If it hadn’t been for the soft wheezing in your lungs and the way your cheeks were devoid of the flush of life, the Cullens would’ve thought you were perfectly healthy.

But they knew, they all knew how serious your condition was and they were constantly on edge. Not even Jasper could calm them. The first time he tried Rosalie threatened to dismember him, which evoked a snarl from Alice.

You were their closest human friend and they had all grown attached to you in different ways. You were one of the few people who could get Rosalie to laugh without a care in the world. Jasper didn’t struggle with his thirst when he was around you. Alice used to use you as her personal doll and not once did you complain. You played pranks with Emmett and showed Esme how to make your old family recipes. Carlisle would teach you about the things he learned over the course of his life and Edward would teach you how to appreciate all genres of music.

You were a friend, a sibling, and a child to the Cullens. They couldn’t lose you to something as simple as an illness. As much as they hoped for the best, they all had the same fear.
