Just the Tip Tuesday: Tools for Makeup on the Go by Margina Dennis
This staple for every film and TV artist can also be a great secret weapon for the print artist who needs to be able to do makeup on the run and have everything at their fingertips - The set bag.
I’m a multi-media makeup artist that can be on a TV set one day and on location doing print advertising with multiple locations the next. A well stocked set bag keeps you mobile and working without having to pack everything up for each location. My personal favorites are the Eye Line and Miyake Pro set bags. Research and assessing your personal needs will help you determine what will work for you. Manhattan Wardrobe Supply is a great resource.
I keep my Eyeline set bag packed and know that I am going to have what I need to do background on a tv set, or make that corporate client look perfect so that I can grab it and go. Here’s a peek of what I keep stashed in my bag:
1. Makeup Atelier Paris 12 Concealer Palette - creamy pigmented with staying power in a 2x4 footprint
2. Makeup Atelier Paris 12 Eyeshadow Palette - Long wearing and water resistant. I can also use the colors in the brows
3. Yaby Cosmetics Powder Foundation Palette - I make my own palette but here are some presets. I have used other powder foundations and this is still the best I have encountered.
4. Eve Pearl Lip Palette - 18 colors in a tiny footprint, a little goes a long way. She used to sell refills for all the colors, but you can always put your own colors in it as you use colors up.
5. Skinn Plasma Flawless Finish - touch up mattifier and I also keep the Bronze version of this in my kit as well.
6. Kett Set Pressed Powder
7. Skin Illustrator Rescue on Set 2.0 Palette - I also carry activator (alcohol) for this palette.
8. Smashbox Step-by-step Contour Kit - it’s all matte
9. Beauty So Clean and Brush Cleaner and Wipes - self explanatory. Helps to keep everytghing sanitary.
10. Disposables/Sponges - I get my disposables (mascara spoolies, lipgloss doves, liner, q-tips, cotton etc. ) from Qosmedix and sponges from Alcone.
11. Three Custom Concealer Palette - gorgeous as foundation and 10 flattering shades.
12. MaqPro “flashy” Palettes - waxy and durable, I can create bruises, use to customize a foundation color.. deepen lip colors, create cream blush etc.
13. Bdellium tools Brush Roll - I have added eye brush set and some lip brushes to this set, but it has everything to get the job done.
14. Kiko Milano Eyebrow Gel and Pencils - Taupe and Black are basically what you need.. and the black can be used as a eyeliner in a pinch.
15. Armani Eye & Brow Maestro - I have hair toned ones of these because they can be used for brows, eyeliner, root and beard touch-up and shadow base. black, mahogany, auburn, and sand blonde.. Can also be used for mascara.
16. Mascara - Blinc is a staple because it does not smudge so I have black and medium brown in the kit along with a volumizing formula. My new love are the Essence mascaras.
17. Blush Palette - right now a LORAC palette lives in my set bag but it was limited edition and LORAC is in another direction so this Zoeva palette is a nice replacement.
18. Skin care bag - contains mini Embryolisse with gloss, Supergoop! Defense Refresh Setting Spray spf50 mini, eyedrops for regular and contact lens, Kiehls men’s lip balm and Dr. Paw Paw as well as Travel size Avene Thermal water, Nivea body creme, Aveno travel lotion, a dry body oil spray and waterproof eye makeup remover.
19. Sealants and Adhesives - Make Up For Ever Fix & Mist mini, Pros-Aide Cream Adhesive mini, Danessa Myricks Lock-on Lash clear, Ben Nye Liquiset mini
20. Eyelashes - Kiss Ever Ez Trio Lash Collection in Small & Medium
21. Makeup remover wipes, wet wipes, and disposable cloth napkins.
*BONUS PRODUCTS*
These are products kept in a Zucca pouch and that can be thrown in the set bag and will expand the scope of getting things done! I use these if I know I am going to be able to initially set up and then need to be mobile.
1. Senna Slipcover Foundation and Blush Palettes - I only have the light to medium of both of these but they get the job done!
2. Viseart Neutral Eyeshadow and Lipcolor Palettes
3. Makeup Up Atelier Paris Waterproof Fluid Foundation- travel size tan/dark pack of 12 shades
4. Kryolan Dermacolor and Supracolor Interferenz - depotted and put into a Vueset Palette.
5. Natasha Denona 5 Eye Shadow Palette - in 01 deeper color tones for smokey eyes, eyeliner, and fashion colors
A simple hair kit can be easily substituted for the bonus items and would fit into the same foot print.
Love and Lipstick,
Margina Dennis

How do you feel about: cerave foaming wash - tea tree spot treatment - washing face in the shower - st. ives apricot wash - rosehip oil for dark spots - shea moisture african black line - embryolisse
How do I feel about all of them individually?
CeraVe Foaming Wash- great cleanser, but I would recommend the Hydrating over it because its non-foaming
Tea Tree Spot Treatment- not my #1 spot treatment rec, but it’s ok. It’s best to dilute it first.
Washing face in the shower- I think its fine because you shouldn’t be showering with overly hot water anyway. However, if you do shower with hot water, it’s best to wash it outside of the shower with cooler water.
St. Ives Apricot Scrub- lol have you looked through my blog? In short, its bad.
Rosehip Oil for Dark Spots- It wouldn’t be my sole dark spot treatment, but I think it could be a good additional treatment. Go for vitamin C serums, niacinamide, arbutin, etc.
Shea Moisture African Black Soap Line- Looks pretty good, but black soap as a cleanser is not good.
Embryolisse- Not impressive ingredients, but solid products
