There are a few possible explanations I’ve been pondering since we got confirmation that he really wasn’t getting any taller... apart from some random genetic issue.
Instead of it being something genetic, that probably would have affected both of them, it could be embryonic, which could easily have affected both or just one of them. Like... their genes are essentially the same, but gene expression was a bit different because of the distribution of hormones in the amniotic fluid. This could also help explain why only our earl ended up with their mother’s asthma.
Something about the way he and his twin were treated by the demon cult permanently stunted/halted their growth. Meaning that even if real Ciel had survived, he also might have stopped growing. Malnourished and drugged for about a month, the twins might have suffered some permanent physical damage. This is a long-shot, but something like this could be used as an excuse for it, even if that’s not something that’s been known to happen. One month, around the age of ten, seems (to me) like a rather short time to cause absolute cessation of growth spurts. The slightly smaller waist measurement when Nina rechecked his measurements was probably due (in manga canon) to our earl wearing a tight corset for a little while. 😂
Both of the twins would have grown normally if real Ciel had survived and our earl hadn’t made the demon contract. This is the crackiest one, the idea that our earl stopped physically growing as soon as the contract terms were sealed. Sebastian wouldn’t make such comments about an adult who hadn’t physically changed in about four years, and neither would anyone else, because major changes wouldn’t be expected of an adult. In fact, it’s commented how much Diedrich has changed in such a short time. Sebastian has never had such a young contractor before, and Othello had never before seen a contractor “still alive”. Is it the stress of the contract that’s causing our earl to not grow? Is it something odd about demon contracts themselves? 🤷🏻♀️ Again, if this is true, it’s not anything that would be obvious for adult contractors.
So, that’s all I’ve been able to come up with, but I’m sure there are other possible explanations Yana-san could go with, if she even wants to explain it. Really, she doesn’t have to. Our earl not getting any taller in almost four years could remain an unexplained phenomenon that exists simply to allow for the twins to remain the same height, almost four years after real Ciel died (when we know that neither of them actually got any taller).
