CB&Q (Burlington Route) E7A Running Fast Out of Chicago, 1971 by Steve Baldwin Via Flickr: “In March of 1971, EMD E7 9936, still lettered for the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy and paired with a sister A-unit, speeds out of Chicago's Union Station with an afternoon rush hour commuter train. The EMD E7 was a 2,000 horsepower A1A-A1A locomotive produced between 1945 and 1949 by GM's Electro Motive Division. 428 of these locomotives were produced, with 44 going to the CB&Q. Only one E7A unit survives today: Pennsylvania Railroad 5901, at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania.”

GM&O E-7's at Glenview IL 1973 by Mark LLanuza Via Flickr: “Amtrak stops at Glenview IL with former GM&O E7s in their final year of operations before retirement. Brand new SDP40 Amtrak will replace these units that year.”
Prior to the formation of Amtrak, locomotives from Gulf, Mobile & Ohio would not have ventured north of Chicago. But in the early years of Amtrak, locomotives provided by many different railroads were used throughout the system.

“CB&Q's eastbound California Zephyr behind E8, E7, E8 (9943B….) arrives at the station, while E9 (9991) awaits departure on the right (with E8 9944B) with the westbound North Coast Limited. The NCL is Northern Pacific's flagship train from St. Paul to Seattle, but the Q handled it from Chicago to the Twin Cities. Often the NCL was combined with the Great Northern's Empire Builder as well as the Q's own Afternoon Zephyr, making a long and colorful train into and out of Chicago. This being the beginning of the Summer travel season, there was evidently enough passengers to justify - or necessitate - running the trains separately.”
