As a non-Washingtonian, Washingtonians didn't bother to teach us to pronounce the names. We got made fun of for trying to read them and they are hard to read when you don't know what they're aupposed to sound like.
I wouldn't think that "saguaro" or "ocotillo" are hard to pronounce, but that's because I know what they're supposed to sound like. Non Southwesterners still struggle with them!
That's actually a good point, you're right! It is a fun game to play at first of "how do you think this is pronounced", but ultimately, we should teach each other how to say our region's native words!
