no offence to mike wheeler but no teenage boy would be that upset for that long about losing a girl he knew for a week unless she represented something more than just a romantic interest to him... perhaps maybe something like his one chance at performing heterosexuality so he doesn't have to think about his repressed feelings and neither does anyone else.... like he's at the age when people really start becoming interested in relationships, and subconsciously he knows that he has to use this time to "prove" his heterosexuality to the world. eleven is the perfect girl for this because she looks like a boy (obviously i don't believe in gender norms but they are definitely prominent in the 80s and she's repeatedly mistaken for a boy) and so with her he can feel like he's satisfying his need to fit in and his true needs at the same time. losing her is like losing his only chance to perform heterosexuality. i don't think he knows this, but i think a lot of his inner turmoil definitely comes from this subconsciously
