To be honest, the glorification of Columbus happened well after his death, and in reality he was pretty much despised by everyone but his own family.

Isabella only gave him the supplies for the voyage to shut him up and get him out of her goddamn palace. And honestly, their argument about planetary stuff is completely different from how it's presented. 

The wealthy elite of Europe had access to education, and as such, knew about the earth being round and Eratosthenes's estimate for size, which was a very good estimate and only off by about 1.6%.

Columbus however argued that the Earth was shaped like a pear with a nipple on the top. Yes, a pear with a nipple on top. I don't know what Columbus had to prove the Earth could be shaped so strangely, but he believed it with all his little tyrannical heart.

Speaking of tyranny, he also lost his job as a governor in the Americas for his excessive cruelty. You heard right, Isabella of Castile, the woman who created the Spanish Inquisition and had thousands of Muslims and Jews forcibly convert, burned, or exiled from the country, thought that Columbus was a tyrannical maniac who needed to be kept as far away from power as possible.

The only reason we celebrate this megalomaniac's day that he discovered America for the Spanish crown (and yes, you can discover something someone else already knew about. Because you had no idea about it. This is why one can say you weren't the first to discover something, but that doesn't deny that you discovered it.) is pretty much unknown. It's probably because of how if Columbus never sailed to the Americas some other person would've probably done it later and been less of a dick about it I mean, the English would've never realized there was land over there and the USA would've never come to be.
