Envy – jealousy is what makes the world go round, everyone wants what the other has after all.
Any conflicts between characters that drives a wedge into their relationship whether it be platonic or romantic due to jealousy?
I had to think really hard about this, but Katie and Collin’s (non)friendship actually has a root cause in jealousy.
Katie is the character with the most without. She was only 4 years old when her parent’s died, so she has almost no memories of them, Eddie being the only real family she has. Since then, she, Eddie and Sloane, have lived on the streets with no home of their own, her relationship to domestic life being through stories Eddie told her about his own childhood. Katie instantly has an issue with Collin, because he had everything that was taken from her at such a young age, and he ran away from it.
Collin had a “normal” upbringing, with two loving parents, a home, and his gf Deirdre. In ch.5, we learn that soldiers had occupied his hometown, so out of fear, he and Deirdre fled, which is how the ended up in Mason in ch.1. Collin is the most fearful character of the main group, while Katie is the most fearless, and he envy’s that. There’s also another reason he’s jealous of her, but that’s a spoiler :^)
Which OCs envy make them feel guilty and wrecks them? Makes them feel like they’re a selfish person for being jealous?
Okay this one is spoiler territory, but just as I said Katie is jealous of Collin, she won’t recognize it as jealousy until book 2. Let me just say that something transpires within the third act of book 1 that becomes a major issue in book 2, and it really hits Katie hard.
Which OCs try to to communicate their Jealousy and solve it in an healthy manner and who just lets it fester and grow?
Healthy: Eddie, Matt, Collin, Sloane, Elliot, Deirdre
Unhealthy: Katie, Adler, Fredrick
Katie’s there only because she has trouble acknowledging her own jealous feelings. Adler and Fredrick just have really bad coping mechanisms, which is why they start off as antagonists.
Any major plot points sparked by jealousy?
How does jealousy fit into your wip and affect the themes and plot?
Jealousy doesn’t really play a major role in Arcadia. Maybe it’s because I personally don’t dwell on my own jealous feelings, so it’s hard for me to write characters that are consumed by it, but idk. Each character feels jealousy at one point or another, but they’re too many things at stake to let it tear them apart.
