Origin and History of April Fools Day

A favorite day for tricksters and a light-hearted welcoming of spring, April Fools' or All Fools' Day is celebrated on 1st of April every year. Despite being celebrated for centuries, its clear origin remains unknown. Its origins have been speculated but never confirmed. Some of the speculations include:

• It is associated with the Vernal equinox where Mother nature fools people with unpredictable and changing weather.

• It's link to other joyful festivals celebrating spring from different cultures including Hilaria in ancient Rome, Holi in India and Purim in Jewish calendar.

• Switching to the Gregorian calendar in 1865 in France. - People who received the news late or didn't recognise the beginning of the new year on 1st January and continued to celebrate it from the last week of March through 1st April became the target of jokes and were called April Fools'. This then spread to the rest of Europe.

While we will never know its true origins, we still have a day for harmless pranks, fun and laughter.
