A Little History of Chakras
Hey y’all!
I have been interested in Hinduism and Buddhism for many years and since I began delving into spirituality I’ve explored many different aspects and avenues. One avenue that has particularly captured my interest is chakras. However, instead of settling for the surface level information about chakras and their associations/how to balance them that I’ve commonly found in books and in videos, I wanted to look into their history to deepen my understanding.
While doing my research, I was able to come across these sources that I found very informative and interesting so I thought I’d share for anyone else who’s interested in deepening their understanding of chakras and the culture it comes from.
To say the least, I was surprised that what we associate with chakras today is far from what the traditional practices entailed primarily due to misinterpretation of concepts when translating texts. I’m not trying to invalidate anyone’s beliefs or practices but learning some more about the history behind something that is becoming increasingly popular in Western culture was very enlightening. I’m in no way claiming to be an expert on the topic either. I simply hope that some of y’all enjoy these as much as I did. (:
If you look into any of these, I’d highly recommend the blog post (last link) by Christopher Wallis (Hareesh). He’s the author of “Tantra Illuminated” and has a B.A. in Religion and Classics, an M.Phil in Classical Indian Religions, and a Ph.D. in Sanskrit. He has translated and explained age old spiritual texts and the way his article is written is thorough yet easy to grasp. Also, the first video listed gives some foundation to some concepts referenced in the second video.
