E-numbers are codes for substances that are permitted to be used as food additives for use within the EU, and are starting to be used in other countries. ▫️ We have compiled a list of non-vegan E-numbers, alongside their corresponding legal names (used outside the EU) and uses below. ▫️ E120 Carmine, otherwise known as cochineal extract, crimson lake, natural red 4 and E120, is a natural red food dye derived from the body and eggs of an insect, and is often used in cosmetics and food products ▫️ E542 Bone phosphate, an anti-caking agent mainly used in cosmetics such as toothpaste ▫️ E469 Sodium caseinate, an emulsifier and stabiliser often derived from milk and used mainly in dairy and milk products ▫️ E441 Gelatine, used as an emulsifier or gelling agent, derived from collagen obtained from various animal body parts, and mainly used in dairy products, confectionery, jellies and meat products ▫️ E901 Beeswax, used as a glazing agent, is a wax produced by the honey bee, and commonly found in cosmetics and confectionary ▫️ E904 Shellac, used as a glazing agent, derived from resin emitted by a certain species of lice, and commonly used as a coating on citrus foods and apples, and in confectionary ▫️ E910/(921) L-cysteine and its derivatives, used as an improving agent, made from animal hair and feathers, commonly used in bread products ▫️ E913 Lanolin, a wax from sheep excreted by the skin of sheep and extracted from the wool, commonly used in cosmetics, and as a source of vitamin D3 in fortified products and multivitamins ▫️ E966 Lactitol, used as a sweetener, derived from whey, and used in bakery and confectionary goods, in particular those who claim ‘low calorie’ ▫️ E1000 Cholic acid, used as an emulsifier, derived from animal bile acid, and mainly used in egg powder ▫️ E1105 Lysozyme, used as a preservative, derived from an enzyme from chicken eggs, and mainly used in cheese ▫️ #animalrights #enumbers #foodadditives #vegan #veganactivism #veganism #veganlife #vegans #vegansof https://www.instagram.com/p/B1_lPIFp9oU/?igshid=2g653x0ivx07
