I learned to patch clamp! 

Following up on that lecture about electrophysiology from last week, I got a post-doc in a neighboring lab to show me and a couple other people how to do a type of ePhys experiment called patch clamp. By the end of our two day unofficial training, I managed to stick an electrode into a live cell, without bursting it, and record electrical currents that were being generated inside! Twice!!!!

I went to a lecture on electrophysiology, which is a technique in neuroscience that involves sticking electrodes into neurons and manipulating them to define their properties. It’s always been so intimidating for me, all the data is just these incomprehensible wave forms and people are talking about capacitance and current mediation and I have always been so lost. This is only a drop in the bucket but it really helped! And I’m excited to find more opportunities to officially learn ePhys instead of just orbiting around people who talk about it a lot.

Did some more acute hippocampal slice prep and field recordings today! Got a very nice sort-of EPSP; hoping the results are clearer tomorrow. I actually did a successful dissection so I'm v proud of myself!!
