But then came someone to pull him out of the gutter

“Bedrock,” he called it, as Arthur stumbled and puttered

But then he was gone, and there was a voice

Talking and describing, giving him a choice

Arthur had given a gift unlike any other:

His eyes, for a being that had no mother

And so they went, in search for an answer

But along the way they lost what they were after

More human than not and more not than human

The voice, John Doe, had become a new man

Arthur Lester wanted to be a good man.

And so did John Doe, but who can?

Two souls, fractured in different ways

Hands of all kinds block his airway

But Arthur Lester was never a good man.

He knew he couldn’t accomplish that in his lifespan

So he gave one last gift to Dear John Doe

The ability to leave him, to let go

And John Doe was a good man.

So he was hesitant with Arthur’s plan

But nonetheless Arthur convinced him

One last hug before all went grim

Arthur Lester had been many things in life.

He had faced all kinds of hardship and strife

But his last action was one last gift

“I love you,” “I owe you,” and then Arthur’s soul was set adrift
