My response to HB135 - Governmental Nondiscrimination Act
Dear Representative XXXXX,
I am writing you to let you know that I stand by the rights of my fellow brothers and sisters of this great nation. I believe in human rights despite gender, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, immigration status or race. I believe that you are all created equally and despite our differences we have the right to stand up to injustices.
I stand by Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights. I am writing to voice my opposition to HB135, the "Governmental Nondiscrimination Act." I believe that if you were to pass this legislation that it would strongly effect our LGBT youth of Wyoming. This passage would send a cultural message that these young people are not equal to everyone else, that they will feel "less than."
The LGBT youth of Wyoming is already fragile trying to find their place in our society. I ask that you recognize how this will affect our youth. LGBT youth are three times as likely to attempt suicide and are bullied more frequently.
Not only are our youth to be effected but also young adults and so on. This great state of Wyoming is called the Equality State. As you are aware, Wyoming was the first state to allow women to vote even before the formation of Wyoming as a state of the union. If we truly stand for "equality" we will take HB135 as a threat to our state namesake.
I am a resident of Jackson, Wyoming and a citizen of the United States of America. I have a voice and I ask that you hear mine.
Sincerely,
Heather C. DeVine
