People are always so shocked when investigative journalism shows how badly horses are treated like be absolutely for fucking real.
Abusing horses is so normalized it’s only because of my own research that I learned that it actually isn’t ok. If I didn’t have the internet and all the information within it, I’d still admire people like Andreas Helgstrand.
I’d think that physical and mental anguish for the horse was an appropriate price to pay for an obedient animal.
I’d think that its perfectly normal for horses to be agressive toward people.
I’d think that it’s fine if a horse constantly displays stereotypic behaviours.
And I think thats fucking sad because I love these animals, always have ever since I first interacted with them. And still the horse industry managed to corrupt the mind of a small child. That they needed to ”show it who’s boss!” by inflicting pain, causing stress.
I guess in a way this is an open letter for the horse industry to wake the fuck up. The equestrian sport is starting to loose it’s social lisence to operate and if we cannot find a way — or more so the will to take that road — to work our horses in a way that is ethical and scientific, we’ll loose it all.
This is also a letter to all the beautiful horses I’ve hurt because I didn’t know any better. I’m forever in their debt for the things they taught me and the patience they showed that I didn’t return. No horse shall stuffer in my hands the way they did, and that’s all thanks to their sacrifices. And for that I’m forever grateful.
