The carved out hull of the decimated subway car offers little in the way of protection, but with the power out it seems likely not to cause any unwarranted noise.
Eric ushers you in before himself, the light from the fluorescents of the station giving the two of you just enough to see by. The seats and bent handrails cast gruesome shadows across the small space, and you decide to take advantage of one particularly large pocket of darkness in the corner.
Your back presses up against the cool metal, dented from God only knows what. Slowly, you slide down to the floor and Eric lowers himself down beside you. Both of you are caked with dirt and there’s blood smeared against one leg of your jeans. Luckily, it doesn’t seem to belong to either one of you.
A steady stream of water is somewhere near, the comforting sound letting you breathe just a little easier. Eric must feel the same because he dares to lean in towards you and speak softly.
“Are you okay?”
Never did that seem more complex of a question. You’re not okay in the grand scheme of things, but you’re currently still alive and, for the most part, unharmed.
“I think so,” you whisper in reply. “Are you?”
Eric nods, rubbing his hands up and down his shins, the worn brown material wearing even thinner in a few spots now.
The two of you were fortunate to run into one another in an alleyway between two buildings—the only stroke of luck either of you have had lately. A natural ease quickly proved that you worked well together and seeing as neither of you wanted to be alone, the choice was obvious.
Even though it’s only been roughly twenty-four hours since you’ve met, with all you’ve been through in that time, it feels as if you’ve known Eric for ages. There was no denying how cute he was either, but your brain barely had time for fleeting thoughts like that when your focus is on staying alive.
“How’s your hand?” Eric asks.
You look at the offending appendage, purple from bruising, slightly swollen, and throbbing. Though, it’s slightly better since you’d found that bodega and swiped all the Tylenol and ibuprofen they had.
During the initial chaos of the invasion—is that what to call it? —your back was up against the brick wall of an apartment building and a man was sent hurtling in the air towards you. Your hand had the misfortune to get crushed between the high velocity man and the brick wall. Ever since you’ve met Eric, he’s been helping you wrap your hand and always checking in on it.
“It’s sore,” you admit.
“Let me see?” Eric extends his hand.
Taking a deep breath, you place your injured hand in his.
Warm, calloused fingers undo the binding currently covering the wound and toss them to the subway floor. It feels nice to let your hand breathe a bit, get some air. With just a featherlight touch, Eric traces his index finger around the mottled skin. The delicate touch sends goosebumps up your arm. If he notices them, he doesn’t say.
A sense of disappointment fills your gut when he releases your hand to get fresh bandages. You chew on your chapped bottom lip as you watch Eric rummage through the Phantom of the Opera tote bag you’d snagged from one of those tourist gift shops.
He sprays a bit of disinfectant spray on your hand, the mist feeling doubly cold after having the warmth of his large hand enveloping yours. Next comes a fresh bandage. Eric always applies them so carefully, making sure it’s not too tight but gives your hand some support. You watch him as he works, your eyes taking in the small details of his face while he’s busy focusing on something else.
His dark eyelashes are so long that they kiss his cheeks with every blink. The curls on the top of his head are messy from everything they’ve been through, but it’s unkempt in a charming way. It amazes you how dry his lips are from dehydration, yet they still look so pink and inviting.
Eric secures the bandage on your hand, and you momentarily move on to admiring the color and depth of his eyes when you realize he’s finished and no longer distracted.
Heat comes to your face, so you lift your injury up to inspect it, hoping to give you a minute to cool down.
“Thank you,” you whisper when you lay your hand back down in your lap.
“Of course.”
The good thing about needing to keep quiet during all of this is that none of the silences could be interpreted as awkward. It’s just self-preservation.
It goes on that way for about ten minutes before you feel your head get heavy and decide to lean it against Eric’s shoulder. It’s not long before he gently rests his head on top of yours. Despite the circumstances around you, a small smile grows on your lips.
But your peace doesn’t last long. A groaning of metal and the now too-familiar skittering of legs or pincers or whatever they’re called.
By the sound of it, you guess that the creature is coming from your left, somewhere down the subway track. But there’s no reason for it to know you’re here. As long as you can remain quiet, the monster should just pass you by without trouble.
A hitch in breath from beside you grabs your attention though. Your head jerks in the direction of Eric to find his breathing speed up and his eyes widen in that recognizable panic.
Pressing one hand to his shoulder, you get his attention and his head whips to face you. With your other, injured hand, you hold up a finger to your mouth for him to stay quiet.
Eric nods but the rate of his breathing only increases. You shake your head and lean in towards him.
“Breathe.” The words could barely be considered a full whisper.
You’ve helped him through these anxiety attacks a few times now so you try to tell yourself you can do it again. You can’t blame the poor guy for being so scared, either.
The clicking of the approaching monster comes closer then stops. It feels as if time pauses while you wait to see what will happen now.
Smashing the play button, the creature falls from where it must have been crawling on the ceiling, to land on the subway platform.
Eric jumps and you see his teeth clench together as he tries to keep the panic at bay.
Step by crunching step, the being stalks closer to your subway car. Even though it can’t see you, instinct tells you to get further out of sight.
As silently as possible, you scoot over so there’s enough room for you to lay flat on the floor of the car. Eric glances down at you and you motion for him to do the same. He gives you a quick nod and with shaking hands, moves to lay down next to you.
Within the cramped space it’s hard for two adults to lay flat, side by side, so Eric ends up on his side, facing you. If you turned your head to look at him, your noses would brush.
One long black limb stretches out from the creature and crushes a piece of metal right outside your car—probably the remains of an adjoining car.
Eric’s anxiety spikes again and before you can think about it, you wrap your arm around his shoulders and bring his body down on top of yours.
It’s not the most comfortable angle for either of you, almost awkward. But Eric wastes no time grabbing onto your waist, his head falling to the juncture between your neck and shoulder.
Consciously, you slow your breathing down in hopes that Eric’s will follow your lead.
Another crunch of metal rents the air and you both jump, clinging tighter to one another. Eric’s grip on your body changed positions slightly, and now his head is resting right over your heart.
You glance down and watch as Eric visibly calms. He takes a few deep breaths and lets his eyes slip closed as he lays against you.
It takes you a few moments to realize what caused the change. Eric’s head is on its side, his right ear directly over your heart. He’s listening to your heartbeat. And it’s calming him. The thought alone makes your heart rate speed up.
Slowly, you reach up and gently rest your hand in his hair. He tilts his chin up so he can see your face and you give him a small smile. The one he gives you in return brings forward the confidence to begin running your fingers through Eric’s soft curls.
The two of you stay that way, listening as the creature moves farther and farther away, until you can’t hear it at all anymore.
But even then, after the immediate threat is gone and everything seems peaceful and calm around you, you both still stay that way. His hands holding onto your body, his head over your heart, and you carding your fingers through his curls.
Maybe this subway car is a better place to be than you originally thought.

The large and loud raindrops fell with no intention of stopping. Minutes earlier, the helicopters had asked us to move to the water's edge, supposedly to be rescued, but it seemed everything went wrong. The creatures emerged from their hiding places and attacked us. The brief moment of calm vanished in less than five seconds. People were screaming and running in all directions. To be honest, I doubted we would get out of here.
I hid under a car, waiting for whoever was still around to leave. Carefully, I started to emerge from my hiding place, praying that I wouldn't make any loud noises and attract those things again.
As soon as I came out, I couldn't help but look at the sky. It had been a long time since I had felt the rain, and despite the circumstances, I still loved it. I decided to walk toward a sheltered place, taking slow and cautious steps while hugging myself. I looked around; not a single human was nearby, only destruction—or so I thought until I saw a white cat with small black spots in front of me. It looked so unreal that I didn't know if I was hallucinating or not, so with some fear, I abandoned my plan to find shelter and approached the cute kitten.
The rain seemed to intensify more and more. I could hear a couple of thunderclaps in the distance, but I still didn't stop following the kitten, which had stayed still in what appeared to be a flooded subway entrance. The little cat turned to look at me, appearing so calm with its big, bright eyes. It then turned back to the water and bent down to drink. I took this opportunity to sit beside it, simply admiring it.
Everything was peaceful—just the kitten and me—until something emerged from the water, startling us. I jumped back, not caring much about the bump I would get, and quickly covered my mouth with my hands to stifle a possible scream. My heart was racing at an impressive speed. I didn't even want to breathe, thinking it might be one of those creatures. But all the fear vanished when I heard what sounded like heavy breathing. Slowly, I removed my hands from my mouth and approached the bars, looking down at the flooded stairs and seeing a boy.
He looked somewhat scared. I couldn't imagine how long he had been underwater. The boy looked at me, tilting his head slightly as if examining me. I frowned, and shortly after, he turned to look at the cat. The little feline was beside me, so he looked at both of us before emerging from the water.
I moved from my spot to help him, extending my hand, hoping he would take it. Though he hesitated at first, he eventually took my hand and accepted my help. Once he was out, I looked around, searching for the cat, but it seemed to have gone. However, I quickly spotted it again; it had moved three or four spots ahead, seemingly heading to an alley.
I dusted off my clothes a bit and started following the cat, but I could hear a pair of "stealthy" footsteps behind me. I knew it was him, so taking advantage of a small café's awning, I stopped and turned around, frowning at him. "Go away," I said in a low voice, to which he just shook his head.
"Why are you following me?" The boy still didn't answer, so with the little patience I had, I moved a bit closer and spoke again, this time a bit louder, "What's your name?" This time, it took him a bit longer to even make a gesture. I waited a bit before he finally spoke in almost the same tone as me, "Eric, my name is Eric."

The nights spent working at the NYU Law School library were peaceful. Where dimly lit aisles provided a sanctuary to any student burning the midnight oil. Your job was easy enough, re-shelve a few books and help the occasional student find something. Whilst night shifts weren’t ideal it was a sure way for you to save up to achieve your dream; going to art school. Besides, it gave you plenty of time to work on your sketches.
It was nearing 2am when someone burst through the doors, looking up from the returned books you were sorting though you saw a disheveled young man anxiously scanning the room until his eyes landed on you. Rushing over he blurted out, ‘Excuse me, I need a book on constitutional law. I have a paper due and my laptops just crashed on me.’
You smiled, hoping to ease his panicked state. ‘You’re gonna need to go up a floor to aisle 23, there should be some constitutional law books on the 2nd and 3rd shelf.’
‘Okay, perfect, aisle 23,’ he repeated as he began to walk away. ‘Thank you so much!’
You watched him go, slightly chuckling to yourself as he went to go downstairs instead of up, clearly too distracted to remember everything you said.
‘Hey,’ you softly called out. He halted, and turned to you. ‘Upstairs,’ you pointed up to emphasise where he went wrong.
‘Oh right, yeah of course, you said that. Thanks again,’ he stammered out as he quickly corrected himself, bounding up the stairs two at a time. You couldn’t help the small laugh that escaped you as you watched him go. Shaking your head you returned to sorting the books.
The next few hours passed uneventfully, a couple of other students came in and out but no one needed anything from you. As the clock ticked closer to dawn you decided to take a walk around the library, to check if any books had been left out.
As you made your way upstairs you wondered if the guy from earlier had found what he needed. Turning the corner at the top of the stairs you spotted him, working diligently in a sea of open books. The desk light bathed him a soft glow as he ran his hand through his already tousled hair. You don’t know what possessed you to go over to him, you only ever spoke to the students if they came up to you at the front desk, but you found yourself drawn over to him.
‘Hey,’ you said quietly, not wanting to break the serenity the library provided, ‘did you find what you were looking for?’
His deep brown eyes met yours with a hint of gratitude as they flicked up from his notes. Despite his frazzled appearance he had an undeniable charm. His slightly stubbled jaw line may have been tense with the stress he was under but there was a softness to his features that drew you in.
‘Oh hi, yeah I found everything,’ he gestured to the scattered books around him. ‘Thank you again for pointing me in the right direction, this place is still a bit of a maze to me.’
‘Not a problem, late night book adventures are all a part of the job,’ you joked, earning you a small chuckle from him.
‘I’m Eric, by the way,’ he said as his gaze lingered on you, causing a warmth to spread inside you. You hoped you weren’t blushing as you managed to reply with your own name.
He repeated it, his English accent making each syllable sound deliberate and thought out. ‘Thanks again. I should probably get back to it before the caffeine completely wears off.’
Understanding his situation, you nodded. ‘Good luck, if you need anything else let me know,’ with that you made your way back to the front desk. You tried to work on some of your sketches but your thoughts kept wandering back to Eric. You’d seen your fair share of late night students, but none had captured your attention quite like him.
Hours slipped by, the library remained quiet with only the occasional rustle or soft footsteps echoing in the stillness. Each sound drew your attention to the stairs, hoping to see Eric walking down.
But soon enough the first rays of sunlight began to filter through the windows, signalling the end of your shift. You packed your stuff, glancing over your shoulder every few seconds in the hope of seeing Eric one last time before you left. Feeling a bit foolish for lingering over a brief encounter you sighed and stepped outside.
The next night came around quickly and before you knew it you were back in the library, among a new shipment of books, in need of scanning and logging onto the system. The smell of fresh pages and the rhythmic beeping of the scanner offered a welcome distraction from the lingering thoughts about Eric. You’d scolded yourself for fixating on a man you’d only had a few interactions with, deciding you needed to get out more.
You settled into a steady rhythm of logging the books but time still seemed to drag. Just as you were about to take a break the main door creaked open. A smile unconsciously spread across your lips at the site of who walked in. Eric seemed calmer today but he still had a determined glint in his eye.
He spotted you and matched your smile. His steps towards you were more confident than the previous night, your heartbeat picked up the closer he got. ‘Hey Eric, need help finding something?’ you greeted him first.
His smile widened as he reached the desk ‘no not quite. I actually wanted to come back and thank you properly, you really saved me last night.’ He leant on your desk, resting on his forearms as he looked down at where you sat.
‘Oh you didn’t have to come back just for that,’ you flushed. Had he really just made the trip here in the middle of the night to thank you again? Maybe you’d affected him as much as he had you, you tried not to dwell on the thought.
‘Yeah I was actually planning on bringing you coffee but I wasn’t sure what you liked,’ he scratched the back of his head nervously. ‘Didn’t want to bring you the wrong thing you know? And a lot of people don’t like to drink caffeine at night so I didn’t know if you’d want it at all, and it might be a bit weird for me to just turn up with it…’
He was anxiously rambling and boy did you find it endearing. ‘I like coffee,’ you gently interrupted, once again hoping to put him at ease. ‘I usually stop on my way here for a latte.’ You nodded towards the empty takeaway cup you’d thrown out earlier.
His shoulders visibly relax, ‘good to know.’ His smile returned as he spoke, somehow warmer this time.
The subtle implication that he was remembering that information didn’t go amiss, filling you with pleasant anticipation. A comfortable silence fell over the two of you, you wanted to continue the conversation but had no idea what to say.
‘Well I guess I should leave you to it,’ he said as he straightened up again, tapping the desk as he did. You couldn’t stop the small pang of disappointment at him leaving so soon. Why had you expected more? After all, you barely knew each other.
Despite the urge to ask him to stay, you were technically working and were unsure of how appropriate that would actually be. You found yourself saying ‘okay, have a good night.’
You could’ve sworn you saw a flicker of hesitation in his eyes. He gave you a small nod and said ‘well, until next time.’ He flashed you one final smile before he turned and left as quickly as he’d arrived.
Watching him go, the echo of the closing door filled you with a mix of regret and anticipation. You wished you’d had the courage to ask him to stay but the moment had passed.
Sighing you got back to scanning the new books. You spent the remainder of your shift internally debating yourself. You’d only just met Eric, you felt crazy thinking about him so often but there was just something about him that lingered in your thoughts. And his parting words ‘until next time’ left you wondering if perhaps you weren’t crazy at all.
It was rare for you to speak to any of the other people that worked at the library, due to being on the night shift you always worked alone, offering polite hellos and goodbyes to the people you swapped shifts with. That's why it was odd that Jennifer, the girl you were taking over for, approached you as you arrived at work a few days later.
‘Hey, someone came in here looking for you about an hour ago,’ she began whilst rummaging through her bag for her keys. ‘Cute guy, kinda had a lost puppy vibe. Anyways I told him you started at 10.’ Without waiting for your response she triumphantly lifted her keys from her bag, said goodbye and all but skipped out of the building.
She had to be talking about Eric, right? You’d been doing your best not to think about him the past couple of days. He hadn’t been back in since his second visit and you figured he was probably just being polite. You took a seat and began trying to sort through the returned books you’d need to re-shelve but you couldn’t stop glancing at the doors knowing Eric could walk in at any moment.
Why were you so nervous? You attempted to distract yourself by focusing on the task at hand but your mind kept wandering. What if he didn’t show up? What if he did? Your stomach churned at the thought of both possibilities. The familiar quiet comfort of the library did nothing to calm you tonight.
You couldn’t help but over analyse every fleeting interaction you’d had with Eric. Was he really interested or were you reading too much into it? Maybe he wasn’t planning to come back after he’d left earlier. You told yourself it didn’t matter, that you didn’t care if you saw him today. But you did care, more than you wanted to admit and the uncertainty gnawed at you.
Just before you had the chance to truly spiral the door swung open and there he was, the man who had been occupying your mind, holding two coffee cups. Relief seemed to wash over him as he spotted you, a shy smile making its way onto his face.
‘Hi,’ he greeted, making his way over to you. ‘Hope I’m not bothering you.’
‘Not at all,’ you replied, your heart fluttering.
He placed one of the takeaway cups down in front of you, ‘one latte, like you mentioned.’
‘Thank you so much, you really didn’t need to,’ you flushed as you reached for the drink. Your fingers briefly brushing against his sending a tingling sensation to shoot up your arm.
His smile was calm and warm as he looked at you. ‘So… is working the night shift at a law library as glamorous as it seems?’ He joked as he took a swig from his own drink.
You laughed, ‘it’s not so bad, yeah it’s messed up my sleep schedule but it’s a pretty easy gig.’ Not taking the risk of him leaving again you continued the conversation, ‘what about you? Is being a law student as hectic as you made it seem?’
His laughter filled the air, a sound you could definitely get used to hearing. ‘Probably more stressful than I made it seem.’ he admitted before continuing, ‘so I take it you aren’t a student here then?’’
‘Oh, no. Law definitely isn’t for me,’ you replied, noticing his raised eyebrows prompting you to carry on. ‘I needed a job and it just so happens that not many people are rushing at the chance to work the night shifts here. I’m actually trying to save up to go to art school.’
His eyes lit up with interest, ‘art school? That’s amazing, are you planning to go to one here in the city?’
‘That’s the plan,’ you grinned up to him.
A slight tension buzzed between you both as silence fell. Neither of you were eager for the conversation to end but both nervous to take the next step. Eric finished his drink and attempted to throw the cup in the bin, missing spectacularly.
‘Oh shit,’ he scrambled to pick it up, his cheeks reddening with embarrassment. You couldn’t hold back the laugh at the failed attempt. In a playful gesture you picked up a crumpled piece of paper from your desk. Throwing it with a flick of your wrist you got it on the first try.
‘Oh I see how it is,’ Eric said, rounding the desk and pulling up a seat next to you. His arm brushed across your shoulder, the contact sending a shiver down your spine, as he reached around you to grab another piece of paper. ‘It’s on,’ he concentrated with mock seriousness, his tongue peaked out between his teeth. With one eye squinted he dramatically tossed the paper, landing it perfectly.
He threw his arms in the air and in a faux commentator voice exclaimed ‘And Eric makes the epic shot with only seconds left to spare! The crowd is going wild!’
You both dissolved into laughter, the moment completely breaking the ice between you. Any lingering awkwardness dissipated and you settled into a rhythm of throwing paper into the bin and sharing stories about your lives. It was easy, and the quiet of the library was the perfect backdrop to your flourishing connection.
After hours of uninterrupted conversation Eric glanced at the clock. ‘Woah I didn’t realise it had gotten so late,’ he stretched into a yawn as if to emphasise his point.
‘Yeah, I guess I’m just used to it at this point,’ you replied, trying to stop your eyes from drifting down to where his top had risen during the stretch.
‘As much as I would like to stay, I have an 8am class,’ he murmured, another yawn escaping him. He looked over to you, not yet making a move to stand up. ‘Maybe I could come back and see you sometime? If that’d be okay?’
His eyes locked with yours and your pulse quickened, his words were confirmation that you weren’t reading too into this connection.
‘I’d like that,’ you replied softly, feeling a light blush spread across your cheeks.
Eric’s smile widened, the tiredness in his eyes briefly fading. ‘Good, that’s great,’ he couldn’t hide his happiness at your reply. Standing up he added, ‘I’ll see you soon.’
‘See you soon Eric,’ your smile didn’t fade as you watched him leave.
Just as he reached the door he paused to turn back to you, ‘goodnight.’
‘Goodnight,’ you echoed with a small wave. He returned the gesture as he stepped out into the night, leaving you looking forward to your next shift with a warm feeling in your chest.
Over the following weeks Eric became a constant part of your life. He frequently turned up during your shifts, always bringing you a drink and staying with you to talk. What started as nervous small talk soon blossomed into something more. You found yourselves sharing stories, your dreams and even just being able to rant about your daily lives to one another. You’d even swapped numbers, occasionally sending each other random texts throughout the day.
So why had neither of you taken the step to suggest meeting up elsewhere? You wanted to, you really did, but the fact he hadn’t suggested it yet made you hesitate. Was he content with the way things were, or was he just as unsure as you about taking things further?
You found yourself lost in thought one evening, internally debating whether you should just take the next step and ask him out or keep things the way they are. A rubber band hitting your arm drew your attention back to the present, and the man sat in his now usual spot across from you.
‘Hey,’ he gently called. His eyes, soft as they met yours, showed genuine concern. ‘You were in your own little world over there, are you ok?’
‘Oh, yeah, I’m fine. Just thinking about some stuff,’ you deflected, hoping he wouldn’t pry any further.
‘Hmm,’ Eric hummed as he raised an eyebrow, a mischievous smirk playing on his lips. ‘Were you thinking about finally letting me see your sketchbook?’
Heat flooded your face, but you couldn’t suppress a smile. ‘Definitely not,’ you replied, placing a protective hand over the book.
‘Oh come on,’ he persisted. ‘I’ve seen you drawing for weeks now. They can’t be that bad!’
You shook your head, ‘they’re not bad, it's just… personal.’ If you were being completely honest you’d never show anyone your sketchbook and the thought of sharing yourself like that felt almost too intimate.
He offered you an exaggerated pout and his best puppy dog eyes, you’d be lying to yourself if you said it wasn’t working. ‘You wound me,’ he clutched his chest dramatically.
‘Wound you?’ you laughed ‘I’m sure you’ll survive if you don’t see my drawings.’
Eric let out a theatrical sigh ‘You never know, I might wither away from curiosity.’ He chuckled as he cast you a playful glance.
‘You’re so dramatic,’ you teased, rolling your eyes in an attempt to hide your amusement.
He leaned forward, ‘Dramatic? I’m just expressing my unfulfilled wish to see your artistic genius.’
You laughed at that, shaking your head. ‘Artistic genius? Now you’re just trying to butter me up.’
‘Is it working?’ he asked with a hopeful grin, his eyes sparkling as he leaned even closer.
Your heart almost skipped a beat at the way he was looking at you. You stuttered, trying to put a cohesive thought together. ‘Not a chance,’ you managed to say.
He laughed, leaning back in his chair ‘Okay, I’ll drop it,’ he turned back to his work. ‘For now.’
A comfortable silence fell over the two of you, the kind of silence that only comes when two people are genuinely at ease with each other. You were content, happy to spend your time in this little bubble the two of you had created. Eric apparently had other ideas as he broke the quiet after a few moments.
‘So, I’ve been thinking,’ he began, his tone had shifted to something more sincere. You turned to see him looking nervous, his eyes downcast. ‘I’ve, urm, I’ve really enjoyed spending time with you,’ your heart jumped up your throat, what was he about to say? ‘I was thinking we could, if you wanted, we could go out sometime. To dinner?’
His eyes finally met yours, showing his vulnerability. For a moment you froze, the weight of what he was asking sinking in. A smile spread across your face, ‘I’d love that.’
His face lit up as the words left your lips, relief evident in his eyes. ‘Great! How about this Friday? There’s a new Italian place I’d love to take you to.’
‘Perfect,’ you agreed, feeling a flutter of anticipation. Friday couldn’t come soon enough.
Friday arrived quickly and you could hardly contain your excitement. You spent the morning out running errands. You found yourself in the grocery store, mind buzzing with thoughts of your upcoming date. Whilst reaching for a carton of milk your phone buzzed in your pocket. Seeing Eric’s name made you smile like a schoolgirl that just found out her crush likes her back.
‘Can’t wait for tonight, see you later :)’
You felt a rush of warmth and quickly typed back a response, ‘Me too, see you soon!’
Before you could fully revel in the anticipation an ear splitting crash shook the world around you. The store windows shattered, sending shards flying causing you to duck down instinctively. All around you chaos broke out, people were screaming, car alarms blaring outside and another sound you couldn’t quite pinpoint.
Heart pounding, you stood and assessed the situation. Everything was in disarray, broken glass covered the floor and random produce was everywhere. Dust and debris clouded the air, obstructing your view of the outside. What the hell was happening?
Screams were still ringing out and you could hear car wheels screeching. Adrenaline surged through you and before you knew it you were rushing outside. You couldn’t believe the chaotic scene that unfolded before you the moment you stepped onto the street. Rubble rained from the sky, people ran in all directions, and a bus was flipped on its side in front of you.
Panic surged but you forced yourself to move. Moving where though, you had no idea. Would your home be safe? Should you even try to get there? Your legs began to push forward of their own accord, taking you away from whatever was going on here.
A screeching sound rang out and you whipped your head in the direction of the sound. A large shape rushed by the corner of your eye, its speed too high to fully comprehend what you had seen. Adrenaline took over again and you began running in the opposite direction.
An army truck roared into view, a speaker on the roof blaring out a message- ‘STAY INSIDE! TAKE COVER!’ Suddenly the truck was violently flipped into a nearby building. You skidded to the floor and looked to where the truck had previously been. Your mouth fell agape at the scene before you, a giant monster stood in the centre of the road.
You froze, taking in the unbelievable sight before you, as a woman ran past you shouting for help. The monster's head snapped towards her and it lunged, smashing her into the ground with one swift swipe.
A scream stuck in your throat and you scrambled backwards. What the hell just happened? What the hell was going on? You had to be dreaming, this was some manic nightmare and you prayed you’d wake up soon.
You continued to crawl backwards, your hands scraping against the rough ground. Whatever was left of the woman’s body laid a few feet away from you. The creature's head turned, snapping towards any sound that rang out. You held your breath, every instinct in you told you to stay silent.
A siren sounded out nearby and the creature bounded off towards it, Seizing the moment you scrambled to your feet and sprinted down a small alley. Hoping that the narrow passage would provide some sort of cover. You crouched low behind a bin, curling yourself into a ball and covering your head. You could still hear the sounds of the absolute havoc going on around you.
Tears began to stream down your face, you wrapped your shaking hand around your mouth to stifle any sobs that threatened to escape. You were, understandably, terrified. Nothing could prepare a person for this situation. Your body shook uncontrollably and your mind raced, trying to grasp at any logical explanation.
You shifted slightly and felt your phone digging into you from your back pocket. Your mind instantly fell to Eric, was he okay? You grabbed your phone, without thinking you tried to call him but the line was completely dead. You prayed he was okay, that he’d found a safe place to hide. You knew you couldn’t stay here forever, maybe you should make your way to where he was and try to find him.
A crashing sound echoed in the alleyway and you looked up just in time to see one of the creatures jumping from one roof to the other. Debris cascaded down and the last thing you remembered was raising your arms to shield yourself from some falling bricks before the world went black.
You regained consciousness hours later, it was dark and the chaos from before had fallen eerily quiet. Dust completely covered you and your head throbbed. You tried to focus and come up with a plan but the pain was making it difficult to think clearly.
You brought a shaky hand up to your forehead to try and alleviate some of the pressure. Your fingers met something warm and sticky, pulling your hand away you were sickened to see your fingers covered in blood. A groan threatened to escape but you quickly remembered the situation, remembering how quickly the monster had reacted to sound.
Despite the pain you knew you couldn’t stay here much longer. Deciding it would be safest to move once it was daylight you huddled closer into the small space you found yourself in.
The silence pressed down on you, making every breath you took sound far too loud. You put your hand in front of your mouth to dull the sound of your laboured breaths. Images of the creature's viscous attack flashed across your mind. As the hours drew on, the terrifying thought that there were probably more of them gnawed at your mind. The city was far too quiet for there to just be one.
As you hugged your knees to your chest, praying for time to move faster, your thoughts circled back to Eric. Had he managed to find safety? You didn’t let yourself think of the alternative. You hoped with every ounce of strength you had left that he was somewhere safe, and that you’d be able to see him again.
As a dim light began to rise, a rhythmic thumping noise began to grow louder and louder. As it drew closer you realised it was a helicopter and from it a message was blaring out.
‘BOAT EVACUATIONS ARE BEGINNING NOW AT SOUTH STREET SEAPORT. TRAVEL SOUTH WITH EXTREME CAUTION.’
You forced yourself to stand, taking small careful steps forward as you focused on the remainder of the message.
‘THIS IS A MANDATORY EVACUATION ORDER. WE REMAIN UNDER ATTACK, SEEK SHELTER ON WATER, THE ATTACKERS CANNOT SWIM.’
Hope. If you could make it to the boats you stood a chance of escaping this living nightmare. You made your way to the alley's exit and tried to figure out the best way to go. The street that you would usually expect to see filled with people and cars was silent. The paths were now littered with rubble, cars were abandoned haphazardly, smoke billowed from a few of the buildings and people’s belongings were scattered everywhere you looked.
The once vibrant and bustling city had been turned into a war zone. You began to make your way south, walking as quickly as you dared to go. Every small sound had you on edge, terrified that one of those things was going to appear at any moment. Your head still throbbed though the blood covering your forehead seemed to have dried.
As you continued through the city, more people began to come into view. As everyone silently walked in the same direction you couldn’t help but look to the other faces around you, hoping to find a familiar one in the ever growing crowd. Dread filled every step you took, the more people that joined the silent march the more you lost hope. How would you find Eric in all of this?
You clenched your fists, determined to not let thoughts like that overwhelm you. Eric was okay, he had to be.
Before long at least a hundred people, maybe even more, had joined the crowd you were in. No matter how quiet everyone was trying to be a group that large couldn’t help but give off noise. You carefully made your way to the edge, thinking it would probably be best to find another way to get to the seaport, away from the bustling of the large group.
Just as you made it to the edge, loud screams tore through the air sending a chill down your spine. The monsters had found you all. Panic instantly erupted in the crowd, people tried to run, desperate to escape from the terror that had arrived.
Your heart raced as you dived into what had been a clothing shop. You ran to the back and crouched behind an overturned display, trying to steady your breathing. Peeking through a crack in the counter you could see the creature's terrifying forms moving wildly through the crowd.
You waited with bated breath, until the world had fallen silent again to emerge from your safe spot. Your whole body shook but the seaport was still your only chance to get out so you forced yourself to move. Slipping back onto the street you found it almost empty, a few survivors darted away, smoke billowed from buildings, more rubble had fallen and in the middle of it all stood a black and white cat.
The cat seemed to be looking at you. You tentatively took a step towards it, but it scampered off. Your eyes followed it, watching as it playfully chased a rat down the middle of the road, before it ran towards a subway entrance out of your eye line. For that brief moment, amidst the devastation the sight of the cat felt strangely grounding.
You let out a breath you didn’t realise you had been holding and turned away, refocusing yourself. You didn’t think you had too far to go now, though the imminent threat had you treading carefully, staying vigilant to not draw any attention to yourself.
As you continued the sun began to slowly set once again, how had a day passed already? And to make your journey even harder, it began to rain. Deciding it would be too dangerous to continue at night in the rain you opted to find shelter.
You found a small abandoned cafe nearby and slipped inside, grateful to be taking shelter from the hard rain. You tried to make yourself comfortable behind the main counter. The hours dragged on as you stayed hidden, listening to the thunder rolling overhead. Exhaustion tugged at your eyelids, though you fought to stay awake, fearful of what could happen if you let your guard down.
You found a small abandoned shop nearby and slipped inside, grateful to be taking shelter from the hard rain. You tried to make yourself comfortable behind the main counter. The hours dragged on as you stayed hidden, listening to the thunder rolling overhead. Exhaustion tugged at your eyelids, you fought to stay awake, fearful of what could happen if you let your guard down.
Dawn broke and thankfully the rain had stopped. You cautiously stepped out, determined to reach the seaport as fast as possible. You kept to the shadows, moving as swiftly as you dared. It wasn’t long before the faint sound of water lapping the docks reached your ears. Turning the corner you spotted a crowd waiting at the edge of the water, silently filling onto a boat. The sight spurred you on, safety was so close.
You stumbled onto the deck, your trembling legs almost giving out beneath you as relief flooded over you. A shuddering breath escaped you as you looked back to the city, now a desolate landscape. You found a spot near the back of the boat, watching as others boarded too, their faces a mix of exhaustion and desperation.
As you looked over the people boarding, a tousled head of brown hair caught your eye. You stood up on your tiptoes, your heart beating faster. Could it be him? It was like a scene from a movie, the crowd began to part, you held your breath as the man's face face was slowly revealed to you. Though your heart dropped as more of his face came into view. It wasn’t Eric. You felt foolish, believing that out of everyone in the city you’d actually make it onto the same boat as him.
Taking a seat you wrapped your arms around yourself. It all felt surreal, being caught between two worlds. The chaos you had escaped and your uncertain future that lay ahead. The boat pushed away from the city, finally putting the hell behind you. All that was left for you to do was to wait, and hope that everything would turn out ok.
‘Stop the boat…STOP THE BOAT!’ shouting jolted you from your thoughts. The urgency in the voice made everyone turn back to look at the city. Standing you followed the gazes of everyone on board and spotted a lone figure sprinting towards the water’s edge. The sight of the monsters chasing them made your blood run cold.
The entire boat seemed to hold its breath as the person ran with everything they had, the monsters closing in on them fast. Without hesitation they leapt into the water, narrowly escaping the creature's outstretched arms. People rushed to the side of the boat, lowering ropes as they shouted encouragement. You noticed a discarded blanket on the deck, and grabbed it, knowing they would need it.
As you pushed through the crowd you caught sight of a drenched cat being lifted from the man's hands. And then your breath caught in your throat. The man’s eyes met yours and time seemed to stop. It was Eric.
The shock hit you like a wave and before you could fully process what was happening you lunged forward, reaching out for him. ‘Eric!’ His name escaped your lips, a mixture of disbelief and overwhelming relief.
He looked equally as stunned as he whispered your name, his voice full of emotion. You fell to your knees in front of him and wrapped your arms around him tightly, afraid he might vanish if you let go. ‘You’re here,’ you heard him murmur as his arms closed around you. Tears welled in your eyes, blurring your vision as you held onto him. ‘I thought…I didn’t know if...’
You pulled back just enough to look into his eyes, not giving him a chance to finish that thought. ‘I’m here,’ you reached up and cupped his face gently. ‘We made it.’ You looked into his beautiful soft eyes, his tears mirroring your own. You wiped away a stray tear and smiled as he leaned into your touch.
And then, without another word, seeming more determined than you’d ever seen him, Eric closed the distance between you, capturing your lips in a desperate but tender kiss. The warmth of his touch grounded you in a way that nothing else could, washing away the horrors of the past few days.
Eric’s hand came up to cradle the back of your head, deepening the kiss as if he was pouring all his unspoken words into it. When you finally pulled away, breathless, his forehead rested against your own. ‘We made it,’ he echoed your words, his voice barely above a whisper as his lips brushed against yours.
Against all odds you’d found each other. The world around you seemed to fade away as you sat there, holding on to one another. The boat rocked gently beneath you as it resumed its journey away from the city. Despite everything that happened, despite the chaos of this new world, you were together, and for now, that was enough.

# FRIDAY 21ST SEPTEMBER 1996
# MORNING! 🌥️
The unbearable series of screeching from the school bell, cued the sound of wheels scraping against the pavement outside. A pair of blue cargo jeans complimenting a classic pair of red jordan’s glued themselves to a skateboard as it began flipping and jumping curbs. The wire of a walkman dangling, the flimsy headphones leaking sounds of a noisy guitar through the hallway of the school.
“Eric Sohn. No skating in the corridor and you’re late to class.” A nerdy-looking hallway monitor approached the skateboard wielding boy, holding out some form of citation for Eric to sign with a wavering hand.
“I’m not signing that.” He laughed, snatching the sheet making sure to crumple it into a tight ball before throwing it behind him. “You didn’t see me. Thank me later.”
The hall monitor, whose name tag read ‘Younghoon’ looked down with eyeballs bulging from his skull at the cigarette in his palm, tears pricking his waterline. Eric continued to skate the corridors to his homeroom, biting into an apple with that jaw of his that had to have been sharpened by the gods-
at least…. that’s what you saw….
Eric was a childhood crush of yours, considering you two lived on the same street growing up and you still vividly remember the heart eyes that pumped from your skull when you watched him play basketball on his driveway from your windowsill every night after school. Everything he did was enchanting, he made the simplest things look hot and his charm was next level too.
As for what Kevin sat next to you was seeing: just some dude burping and blowing it into his friends face afterwards.
In your sick love fantasy, you still thought he was the funniest most angelic man to first stick his feet in the soil of the earth.
“If you wanna survive senior year, you need to stop staring at him like that. it’s gross and it’ll leave you the minute it gets heart eyes for anything else. How many times can we have this conversation?” Kevin laughed and scribbled down, ‘1. NO F**K BOYS (especially Eric Sohn)’ in bright red ink at the top of your page.
“So!” Your homeroom teacher waltzed into the room with a wide grin glowing from cheek to cheek. “The class of 96’ how do you feel?! Your time at this school is almost over! Some of us are setting good examples, sat in our actual chairs and not the table Mr. Sohn?”
You giggled as Eric turned with a sigh, crossing his arms and sinking into his seat, secretly you hoped he would catch eyes with you just for a second and share a smile. However, the boy just put his headphones back on and slammed his head on the wooden desk as if he were to fall asleep.
You looked down at the diary where,
“ 1. NO F**K BOYS ”
had been written so passionately by Kevin and thought, if you’re gonna make senior rules, you should at least make the best high school ‘how to’ guide the world has ever seen.
——
The entire school day, word had gotten about ‘Kyu’s first party of the semester’ renowned for his crazy mansion of a house, and parents that were home a concerningly small amount of the time. Happening tonight, you hadn’t even thought about what you were gonna wear yet, or the fact that Kyu himself was Eric’s bestfriend.
Eric had a rather large friend circle of boys in your year, from Juyeon who was into sports to Jacob who was a bit of a music nerd and closer to Kevin if anything. Despite this, neither you or Kevin had received an invite to Kyu’s house for later that day.
# LUNCHTIME ! 🍛
Filling your metal tray and sitting next to Kevin on the end of one of the empty lunch hall tables, before you you could even begin biting in the panini you’d paid for, it was snatched out of your hand by...
“Sunwoo, that was my sandwich.” You groaned, looking at your empty plate and then back at him with a glare. “Do you not have your own food?”
“This looked nicer than my food, just have it back.” He shrugged dumping the half eaten sandwich back on your plate.
“Oh no it’s all yours.” You smiled sarcastically watching as he smiled and took the sandwich back in one animalistic gulp.
“So sorry about that y/n. Isn’t he just awful? I got you a new one.” Hyunjae, as if the entire scene was staged, sits beside you with his hand smoothly rested on his cheek. He pushed a new sandwich in front of you with a carton of orange juice sat at the top of the tray.
You rolled your eyes before you almost tripped over your comically untied laces (how did both of them end up that way?) You flew backwards only to be caught by Hyunjae, once again returning to his cringey script.
“Falling for me, I see?” He smirked lifting you back to your feet as you sat down to retie your laces that had been undone by someone at some point in time.
“Is this just going to happen every lunchtime?” You cocked an eyebrow with a huff, tying bunny ears in your converse and briefly looking back up to the boy.
“Of course, however each time it just gets more creative.” He smiled confidently, you were unaware that these were romantic gestures since Hyunjae made it seem like one big joke with his extravagant concepts.
“Please make it stop.” You rolled your eyes and tucked into the new sandwich, Kevin laughing to himself. You began to zone out as you noticed Eric from across the canteen, sat on the table skateboard propped up and talking to his friends. He looked at you momentarily with a smile before you were interrupted by Hyunjae waving his hand in front of your face.
“Are you guys coming to kyu’s?” Hyunjae asked, biting into his own.
“No. We’re not cool enough.” Kevin began to fake cry, wiping invisible tears and squealing in a high pitched whine.
“He said anyone can come, of course you guys are invited. When has he ever asked anyone?” Sunwoo added punching Kevin the back lightly and taking a seat at the table. “Just show up.”
As lunch ended, you found yourself digging through your locker for the biology notes you’d written the other day. However as you dug through your shelf you just couldn’t find them.
“What you looking for?” A deep voice alarmed you, looking up to see Eric Sohn throwing his jacket in the locker that belonged to him next to yours.
“Oh. Uhm.” You stuttered for a moment, wondering if your eyes and ears were telling you the truth. “Just some notes for biology, we have a test coming up.”
“Oh yeah, you can borrow mine for now. Just slot them back in my locker on Monday.” Eric passed you a few pieces of A4 with neatly printed notes, the cigarette resting on his lips bobbing as he spoke.
“Thanks, that’s uh, really kind of you.” You smiled as he shook his head nonchalantly.
“It’s nothing, don’t stress.” He added before breezing past you to the exit of the school with a confident stride in his steps, his skateboard under his arms.
# EVENING 🌌 :📍Y/N’s HOUSE
“Okay so what are you wearing?” Kevin asked turning around in his sequin shirt and jeans, complimenting his outfit with a crossbody bag and sunglasses.
“Uhm. Not sure yet. Might go for baggy jeans and a sequin top too.. I have a lot.” You showed Kevin the options, watching as he scratched his chin and looked between them.
જ⁀➴ৎ୭ OUTFIT OPTIONS:
(feel free to mix & m a t c h!)
“Gorgeous!” Kevin smiled, fixing you a few necklaces of his behind your neck. You smiled and looked in the mirror briefly before setting off down the block.
The house pulsated the entire street as guests spilled in the front door to the infectious rhythm playing at max volume from the many speakers around the house. A kaleidoscope of vibrant lights drowned the space, as drinks circulated everyone from the kitchen.
House parties tended to be like some sort of cringe trashy and incomprehensible version of a homecoming dance for adults that you couldn’t seem to understand. Sure they were fun but, high school students embarrassing themselves sure wasn’t.
“Hey Kevin.” A very drunk Ji Changmin sauntered over to us at the entrance, “Who’s the plus one?”
As Changmin looked over with his devilish glare, apart of you started to get nervous. As if you were mixing with the wrong crowd, a gentle flip in your stomach warned you, something was about to go incredibly wrong.
“Hi, I’m y/n.” You introduced yourself with a smile, as he passed you a beer from the many in his arms.
There was one thing that would determine whether someone would survive senior year: alcohol.
“2. PARTIES = STATUS”
Probably one of the most screwed survival tips, but unfortunately for teenagers who were just short of legal age a sip of liquor was enough to emphasise them as ‘cool’. Even if drinking is not your thing, the general consensus of being popular in senior year was to attend parties, host them and make lethal mistakes whilst there.
Throughout the night, you and Kevin found yourselves bouncing from group to group eventually watching Sangyeon and Juyeon play the most intense game of cup pong ever played in the competitive sports world.
♫ ANOTHER NIGHT - REAL MCCOY playing from speakers ♫
“Do you wanna take this one?” Sangyeon asked, holding the ping pong ball in front of you with a raised eyebrow.
“Me?” You asked laughing from the sidelines as he nodded, standing up properly you walked towards the table where most eyes were fixed on the table.
You’d gotten the grips of how to play, grasping the ball with a nervous clench before watching as Juyeon stared down the table with a sly smirk, his arms folded over his white tank top.
Bouncing off the table the ball hit the top of the few cups cups before landing in the fourth, making Juyeon’s total three. The crowd watching laughed as Juyeon threw his head back in defeat, taking the cup and gulping down its contents.
“Taking advantage of beginners luck is dirty play.” Juyeon shook his head at Sangyeon who laughed knowingly. “Whatever. If I land this you’re drinking this.”
Sure enough, as Juyeon bounced the ball across the table it landed in one of the two cups left leaving one. You’d hoped he’d missed not wanting to get to drunk around a group of people you’d never met. Nevertheless you took the cup and necked it’s contents, with a cheering crowd. Juyeon eventually won against Sangyeon, seeing the close of world’s most competitive game of cup pong.
A few drinks through the night, your brain chemistry had already began buzzing and the socialite in you stepped out of hiding, as you spoke to almost everyone you encountered. Hearing commotion from the living room, you dragged Kevin to investigate.
The room buzzed with anticipation as people gathered in a circle, forming a tight-knit group. Nervous giggles filled the air, drowned out by the music playing in the background. Sunwoo placed a bottle in the center of the circle, ready to determine the first pair of an early game of ‘spin the bottle’.
With a flick of his wrist, the bottle spun, its rotation echoing the excitement in the room. Hearts raced as it slowed down, pointing towards its chosen target. The room held its breath as the Sunwoo locked eyes with a girl he’d had a crush on for most of his childhood, their cheeks flushing bright pink as he made eye contact. With a playful smile, Sunwoo picked out one of the ‘fates’ written in the hat, revealing the crumpled paper to the crowd.
“Kiss.” He laughed nervously, smiling as she was, the circle squealed in anticipation. He leaned in to give her peck which raised a “booo” from the crowd at the underwhelming gesture.
“Y/N JOIN IN.” Hyunjae yelled from the group, causing the circle to laugh at how pathetic he was. You jokingly stepped behind Kevin to hide as “Join” began to be chanted in the room, persuading you to sit down in a gap made by Hyunjae and Haknyeon.
You took the bottle and spun it, the booze causing nerves to disappear. As the bottle began to slow down, Hyunjae grabbed the glass pointing it towards him - no one protesting considering this was his life long goal.
You sighed, hoping the paper in the hat wouldn’t do you dirty in this situation, looking up you noticed a familiar figure. Eric’s eyes stared down at you, stood from the other side of the circle, rested against the mantlepiece in his tank top and baggy jeans - a bottle of beer gripped loosely in his hands.
All of a sudden, your hands began to shake in adrenaline, Hyunjae’s eyes wavering as he noticed the way you looked up at the other boy. You began to unfold one of the pieces of paper from the hat, “7 minutes in heaven” you could have screamed. This was truly a worst case scenario, as the circle cheered and Sunwoo ushered the two of you to the bathroom.
Hyunjae locked the door with a sigh, sitting both legs in the bathtub and taking a lengthy swig of his beer in a saddened manner.
“Are you not going to do anything?” You asked curiously, folding your arms and taking a seat on the toilet cover.
“No.”He sighed, resting the bottle on the side and turning to look at you with an inquisitive stare, his eyebrows furrowing as if they contemplating internal questions.
“Why not?” You asked further, leaning forward as Hyunjae’s confident demeanour seemed to have suspiciously faltered.
“I see the way you look at him.” He suddenly spat, as if something within him snapped. “You’ll never give it up will you. Everyday, I do something to make you laugh, smile and show you someone cares. Yet… Every time I try, you’re still staring at that motherfucker who wants nothing to do with you.”
“Sorry?” You asked almost confused, the outburst seemingly unnecessary as he went to speak again but was interrupted by an ominous banging at the door.
“I get you guys are probably exchanging cooties in there, but I need to shit.” The sweet sound of Haknyeon’s charming voice and vocabulary echoed through the bathroom causing you to hold back a laugh in the situation.
“Listen y/n. I need to ask a favor.” Hyunjae proposed, stopping you from reaching for the handle of the door. “My parents have been bugging me about having a girlfriend, since my brother has one now and they’re telling me I’m a good for nothing man who will never be able to commit to someone. Which is kind of true. But will you pretend to be my girlfriend to get them off my back?”
“Will I? Hmmm….” You pretend to think for a second before retorting with a loud. “NO.”
“Please. I’ll help you get him, I’ll do everything I can to help you win Eric over. I’m one of his bestfriends.” Hyunjae’s eyes glistened in genuine sparkle, an expression you’d only come across once or twice in your life.
“I’ll think about it. But for now, it’s not a yes or a no.” You closed the conversation, head spinning as you opened the door, Haknyeon spilling into the bathroom and beelining straight for the toilet.
“3. DONT PRETEND TO BE SOMEONE’s GIRLFRIEND WHILST YOUR TRYING TO GET THE ATTENTION OF THE LOVE OF YOUR LIFE.”
Oddly specific rule, however as you proceeded down the stairs it seemed you wouldn’t have to convince people you were dating - their dirty minds had already assumed what had happened in that bathroom.
“You’re on.” You looked back at Hyunjae with a smile before linking arms with Kevin to leave, the party only dying down in the early hours of the morning.
# SATURDAY 22ND SEPTEMBER 1996
# MORNING 🌥️
The gentle rays of sunlight peeked through the curtains, birds began chirping outside, and the comforting aroma of breakfast drifted from the kitchen. Your eyes stuck together and your head booming with music from the night before, on the floor Kevin was sprawled emitting gentle snores.
The sound of a car horn outside, immediately brought you to your senses, with your fingers your gently moved the curtain to see Hyunjae leant against his car.
“Your dating Hyunjae?” Kevin asked, giving you the fright of your life as he appeared over your shoulder.
“No.” You immediately refuted, getting shivers from the sickly idea of having to date such a inferior choice of male.
“So why’s he here?” Kevin asked with a sarcastic voice, laughing at the stupidity of the scene.
“We’re dating but like just so his family gets off his back.” You sighed, standing up out of bed and beginning to make yourself look more presentable.
“You’re FAKE dating, Hyunjae?” Kevin’s jaw dropped even more than it already was if that was even possible. “That isn’t gonna look good to lover boy now is it?”
“Listen, he’s helping me get him. He’s on the inner circle, if I have a chance of getting Eric this is it.” You sighed taking your clothes to change in your arms.
“I’m calling Jacob.” Kevin suddenly added, pulling out his nokia with its antenna.
“Don’t you dare he said don’t call unless it’s emergencies, he’s in exam mode.” You recalled, knowing Jacob is practically unreachable during exam season.
“This is an emergency.” Kevin emphasised each word with a sarcastic edge.
“It’s not and if you call him, I’ll make your life so difficult.” You pointed at the boy with a warning finger before walking out to meet Hyunjae in front of his car.
♫ ALL THE SMALL THINGS - BLINK 182 playing from the car radio ♫
“Hey.” You smiled, climbing into the passenger seat of his car, the soft top rolled down so the breeze would eventually leave you wind swept. “Where we heading?”
“Bowling with my parents.” Hyunjae grumbled, more than happy you were in his car but visibly stressed with the entire situation.
“Is this all I have to do and I’m not your girlfriend anymore?” You suggested, leaning your head on the side of the car and letting the wind catch your face.
“Should be. Then I’ll tell you all about him.” Hyunjae chuckled, one hand on the steering wheel and another raking through his hair.
The bowling alley downtown was lively, decorated with neon lights and the sound of crashing pins. The smell of hot dogs and nachos wavering faintly in the air. The lanes are filled with laughter and ‘friendly’ competition.
Hyunjae swiftly introduced you to his mother and father, who looked you up and down before sending him an impressed smile.
“I’ll have to warn you dear y/n, they both get a bit competitive.” Hyunjae’s mother smiled as Hyunjae age his dad began squaring up to each other in the lane.
Whilst you were putting on your shoes, you felt a pair of eyes on you from somewhere unable to tell where.
“Hey y/n!” A familiar cheerful voice greeted you, looking up shell shocked you saw Eric, dressed in his work uniform with a lollipop. You felt your heart shatter, Hyunjae had to know he worked here, he set you up, but why?
Eric looked gorgeous in uniform you had to say, his pinstriped shirt and jeans complimented by the blue cap. However, you had bigger issues.
“You on a date with Hyunjae?” He asked, polishing a pair of shoes behind the counter next to you, happening to notice how pretty his hands were. “You look pretty, he’s a lucky guy.”
What did he say?
“Oh Eric! You met my girlfriend! This is y/n!” Hyunjae wrapped an arm around you with a condescending smile, for you everything felt as if it had frozen in time.
Eric swivelled the lollipop in his mouth for a moment, observing the look of shock you’d tried to conceal with a smile on your face and chuckled to himself.
“Landed a nice one there haven’t you buddy?” Eric almost began to patronise his bestfriend, a look of suspicious nature hidden in his big smile like a cheshire cat.
“I’m just going to go to the bathroom.” You giggled before excusing yourself to the toilets across the arena with a nervous pace.
“Well that backfired.” A voice sounded, someone pulling you back from one of the booths in the canteen. Kevin and Jacob sat like spies with sunglasses tuxedos and newspapers had been watching the entire time.
“He set me up.” You sighed putting your hands in your head. “I know he’s jealous of him but i didn’t think he’d go this far.”
“It’s Hyunjae. This is probably hilarious content to him.” Kevin rolled his eyes as Jacob nodded along, them both peering around the corner to watch the scene unfold.
“Y/n have you ever considered that Eric might like you?” Jacob asked taking his sunglasses off to look at you properly before you answered.
“He definitely doesn’t like me like that, maybe as a friend?” You suggested, twiddling your thumbs together over the wooden surface.
“Well he doesn’t seem to like the entire you and Hyunjae thing.” He added looking back over to the icy conversation between the two boys at the check in desk - Hyunjae’s parents stepping in to tell him they were ready to play.
“How can you tell?” You furrowed your brows in confusion, waiting for the reply as he began to speak.
“Duck! He’s coming.” Kevin quickly hid you under table covering you with his jacket as they both got back to their newspapers.
“Kevin?” The sound of Hyunjae’s voice from above the surface startled. “You seen y/n anywhere?”
“No? I saw her come in with you.” Kevin cleverly redirected the question allowing the boy to shrug and walk in a different direction looking for you.
“I told you these disguises wouldn’t work, we needed the moustaches.” Kevin hissed across the table to Jacob, the both of them having watched a few too many over the summer.
“Listen what do I do? Because I can’t tell Eric I’m fake dating Hyunjae because then he’d find out I was doing it because I have a stupid little thing for him!” You exclaimed, frustrated as you’d fell right in to Hyunjae’s trap.
“4. DON’T FALL FOR YOUR CRUSH’S BESTFRIENDS BLACKMAIL”
“I wouldn’t call it little. But hope things work out for you!” Jacob smiled angelically ignoring the pain shimmering in your eyes.
“Me too!” They began to gather their things ave scramble, about to take flight from the situation.
“Where are you guys going?” You asked panicked they were about to ditch you and leave the sticky situation.
“Getting you out of here.” Kevin replied taking your arm and sprinting out of the nearest exit - they may have set an alarm off for opening a fire door but oh well.
“5. DO HAVE FRIENDS THAT WILL GET YOU OUT OF SITUATIONS YOU CAUSED YOURSELF”
# MONDAY 24TH SEPTEMBER 1996
After hibernating in your bed for the rest of the weekend and 13 times Kevin had tried to ring the landline to check if you were okay. It was time to face them all at school and you could not think of anything worse.
“Oh my god. It’s aliveeee.” Kevin acts out a poor excuse of a Frankenstein impression as you laughed and breezed past him to your locker.
“If you see Hyunjae hide me.” You chuckled as he signed ‘rodger that’ with a salute and began rambling about the pasta he cooked for dinner the night before.
All of a sudden you were pushed into the locker, Kevin stood in front on you casually reading a book as Hyunjae walked by with a question mark above his head. He didn’t bother asking where you were, assuming if you weren’t with Kevin you weren’t there at all.
You eventually broke free of the hiding spot, fixing your hair and brushing down your clothes. The sound of wheels rolling down the corridor coming to a halt beside you.
“Were you?-” Eric was about to ask but refrained considering Kevin was signing ‘cut’ and ‘shush’ behind you flailing his arms around like a maniac.
“Here’s your notes.” You smiled, a touch of pink rising to your cheeks as your hand grazed his defined one, the notes you’d borrowed in pristine condition.
“Thanks, cutie.” He smiled, the nickname causing you to freeze up in your tracks, you knew he only said it out of courtesy or like the others that was ‘just his personality’ but it made your heart melt - as you watched him skate down the corridor, his biceps flexing to maintain balance.
You managed to survive your classes without being berated by Hyunjae or any of his friends, having to sadly eat lunch in a cubicle surely wasn’t a high moment of yours.
Soon the bell was sounding for the end of the day as students flocked out of the grounds excited for the school’s baseball match that evening.
“There she is!” You heard an annoyingly shrill voice yell from behind you, as you were about to cross the car lot. Behind you was Eric Hyunjae and Juyeon, walking in a line towards you whilst Eric was on his skateboard.
“Told you I saw her.” Eric laughed as you were clearly avoiding Hyunjae at all costs, you turned with a bitter smile as they got closer.
“You coming to Eric’s big game tonight?” Juyeon asked giving a friendly elbow to Eric, clearly nervous as it was the first big game of the season.
Eric looked at you with an ounce of hope, only to be quickly shot down, but you couldn’t help but notice the way his eyes sparkled at the idea.
“No she’s actually got a date with me.” Hyunjae answered for you with a snide tone, eyes flickering towards you.
“No,no. I think I’ll go.” You smiled, “I really like baseball.”
“I don’t wanna interrupt you guys.” Eric looked between you both with something suspicious lingering behind his eyes as he turned his baseball cap to the left.
“You’re not interrupting us! Perhaps this ‘date’ can be on the pitch.” You suggested looking at Hyunjae’s wide eyes, knowing his plan was falling to pieces but he couldn’t disagree, not in front of everyone.
“Cool.” Eric smiled smugly, “See you there.”
You watched as him and Juyeon walked to the pitch for pre-match practice. Not wanting to spare Hyunjae anymore time, you walked at lightning speed in the direction of your house, ignoring him yelling your name from behind you.
“Y/n give me a second.” Hyunjae caught up to you on the sidewalk, grabbing your arm to turn you around. “You don’t have to do this anymore, go get him. It’s clear you’ll always love him and I can’t change that. I’m sorry, I took it too far.”
Despite the fact you appreciated the apology it seemed as if it was a little to late, he’d already tried to bring everything crashing down between you and Eric and now he thinks the both of you are on a date at his game. You smiled at him and nodded, swiftly turning on your heels and rushing home.
# LET’S GO H A W K S, LET’S G O O O !!🏟️
The chanting of cheerleaders and commotion amongst the crowd sang from outside of the pitch, Kevin and Jacob having already bought snacks rushed to a bench with good sight of the pitch.
“I’m so excited for this, there’s literally no way we lose.” Kevin watched as your school team walked out on to the pitch, immediately spotting Eric and making smoochy faces at you.
You didn’t notice too much of Kevin’s torment, as you were captivated by the sight of him. Eric looked up at the bleachers as if he was scanning the crowd for someone in particular his eyes landed on you for a moment - or Kevin maybe even Jacob.
The game commenced, no home-runs were scored by the competition and our team was not looking to beat them either. Time was running out as the ball left the hand of the pitcher, Eric stood in formation waiting for the ball to reach him. He swung the bat behind him and hit the ball with astonishing force triggering a roar from the crowd. He made a run for it, it was a home-run, the winning home-run.
“Go get him girl.” Kevin said as the players began to leave the pitch, watching as you ran off immediately to find him.
You patiently waited outside the locker rooms for him, knowing the other players would be tossing him around and winding him up. He eventually emerged from the lockers, wet hair and a towel around his neck.
“Can I talk to you?” You asked as he caught eyes with you, confused to why you’d waited.
“Sure, where’s Jae?” He asked, following you as you began to walk to somewhere more private.
“I’ll explain all of that.” You sighed, looking back at the boy for a moment, feeling your heartbeat pause in time as the sunlight hit his skin.
You both made your way under the bleachers, Eric already making a joke about what happens underneath them before even getting there.
“Eric. I have to say this otherwise one day I’m going to implode.” You began, your heart facing the adrenaline kicking through your veins and it was as if a theme park was screaming in your stomach. “I like you.”
A silence sat amongst you, the conflict in his eyes bouncing back and forth making you increasingly apprehensive for what he was about to say.
“Y/n I can’t do this to Hyunjae. Listen I really like you but that’s my-” Eric tried to collect himself, holding on to the top of the bleachers with one arm and wiping his forehead with the other.
“Eric we’re not dating! I know you can see that.” You pleaded with him, watching as his gorgeous eyes twisted to confusion.
“You’re not?” He asked, more than confused.
“No…. I agreed to ‘fake’ date him to get his parents off his back and to get to know more about you. But.. he took it too far and I think he might’ve been jealous I liked you.” You admitted, chewing your bottom lip and looking anywhere but at the boy fresh off the pitch in his baseball uniform.
“I don’t know because what if you’re lying to me.” He suggested, you couldn’t get offended because what if you were?
“Eric you’ve known me since we were kids I wouldn’t lie to you, I wouldn’t get anything out of doing that.” You reassured him, watching him contemplate ideas in his head as if mini cogs were turning.
“Y/n I know I don’t show it, but I really was interested in you but Hyunjae I couldn’t hurt him. Do you mind if I?” He asked, pulling you closer to him with his back leant up against the metal beam behind him.
“Of course I don’t.” You smiled, your voice barely above a whisper as you watched that beautiful grin of his spread across his lips, his brown eyes sparkling down with the sunset peaking through the gaps of the rows.
He kissed you, so sweetly, so gently, holding your face with the palm of his hand and bringing your waist closer as your stomach flipped and your heart filled with love. As you parted he brought you into his arms, it was the warmest hug that just felt as if everything was right.
“Now that you’ve said it, it makes sense. I’ve never seen someone avoid their boyfriend so much until now.” He laughed thinking of the time you escaped the bowling alley with Kevin and Jacob and further went to extreme lengths to avoid him at school too.
You giggled in his arms, looking up to his face that smiled back down at you, gently moving in for another kiss.
“I think I won twice today.” Eric laughed, giddy with excitement the grin on his face practically beaming from ear to ear.

second chapter: wombat poop
Summery: y/n (genderneutral)* and Eric are still on the boat and have to compensate the hurtful memories of the last hours
Warnings: Just human beings being human beings, panic attacks, hurt/comfort I guess?
*Because this is now a multi-chapter story, I had to give y/n a background and character traits and stuff, so y/n is now an OC.
The facts so far: has an anxiety disorder, a family (parents and siblings), a cat, is between 25 and 30 years old and reserved
a/n: I used a translater and checked, if all makes sense, but I'm still unsure, since english isn't my mother language. It just feels.. off. If anyone likes to be a beta reader- I'm so here for it! 🫀

I let myself fall next to him against the ship's wall and had to take a few deep breaths myself. Cautiously, I glanced to the side. Eric was leaning forward, his face in the cat's fur. He was still sobbing, but at least his body seemed relaxed. I sighed inwardly and turned my gaze away from his hunched back to look at my hands. They were still shaking a little. I would probably need until tomorrow or the day after to get his pain out of me. To regulate myself.
My gaze went upwards and I looked around. In the faces of the people who, despite the safe situation, were still speaking only quietly and tensely with each other, fear was written. The day was grey. We were heading towards the open water. New York had been overrun by monsters, too many people had died in the last few hours. My family...
My gaze returned to Eric's cat. My cat... All dead. Maybe I would need a few more days to regulate myself. It started to tingle in my stomach, it would rise into my chest and end in the form of nausea and an unstoppable flow of tears if I didn't stop it immediately.
"What is her name?"
Eric needed a few seconds before reacting and let himself fall back against the wall.
"Frodo," he answered tiredly, staring into space. A hand slipped out of the black-and-white fur and disappeared into the jacket pocket.
"He didn't run away when it started? He stayed with you?" The tingling in my stomach eased. Nala. Red fur. Young. She had limped. I hadn't managed to get back to her in the apartment when it started. The tingling returned.
"Eric?" I asked.
He closed his eyes and shook his head. "Frodo belonged to a friend. He led me... to her."
"How romantic.."
"Platonic," he corrected me and smiled at me faintly, "You remind me of her."
"Yes?"
"You reminded me of her. Just now.." he cleared his throat, "Thank you."
I shook my head: "You can definitely make it up to me later."
He looked at me questioningly, and I held out my trembling hands to him. "Anxiety disorder. Since I was 14."
He pressed his lips together and nodded slowly. "I'm sorry."
Again I shook my head. "Did you know that earwigs can fly?"
"That's.. strangely creepy."
"I think so too," I laughed, "Their pincers – they use them to unfold the wings. That's what they have their pincers for."
He smiled: "You like insects?"
"No. I respect all animals, at least I try. But like?"
For a while we remained silent, and I could only hear the water hitting the boat. The engine. As if a plan were slowly being forged around us, about how things should continue. The tingling was now so quiet that it no longer posed any danger.
"Tell me more," he murmured, and I didn't know if it was intentional, but when he changed his seating position, he came so close that our arms touched, sending a shiver down my spine. I yawned.
"You first," I smiled.
"Okay.." he raised his eyebrows thoughtfully, "In Washington, it is forbidden to sweep dirt under your carpet."
"You're lying!" I laughed.
"It's true!" he replied loudly, and I noticed a few glances darting our way.
"What's the punishment?"
"No idea.."
"How do you know that?"
"I'm studying law."
I looked him up and down. I wouldn't have thought that. But I also wouldn't have thought that the muscular Henri, who had saved me, played the flute in an orchestra.
"And then you don't know the punishment for the law?"
"I'm not particularly interested in the law..," he smiled, "Your turn."
"I am unemployed."
He laughed: "That's not what I meant."
I looked into his brown eyes and a wave of relief washed over me, warming my cold skin. I don't know when anyone ever reacted that way to me being unemployed. Suddenly I was even more aware of his closeness. And wanted to be even closer to him. It took a moment before I could gather a thought again. Far too late I laughed too and frantically thought of another fact.
"Wombat poop is cube-shaped."
He laughed out loud, and it triggered something in me that had been stuck for a long time. Maybe it was him, maybe it was me, or maybe just because it brought more warmth, but we moved even closer together.
I looked at my wristwatch as my stomach growled. We had been playing the game for at least half an hour. I yawned again; it was my turn.
"I'm hungry."
"Strange fact," he smirked before sighing, "me too."
I looked up and searched for Henri's gaze. It didn't take long to find him. He was standing in a group of about six people and was looking at me. His gaze flicked back and forth between me and Eric.
"I'll go ask Henri if there's a plan."
Eric frowned but nodded. His arms pulled the sleeping Frodo closer to him.
My legs felt somewhat weak and I got dizzy as I stood up. Not good, but considering the circumstances... Henri broke away from the group and came towards me.
"You should rest," he murmured, as quietly as he could, "You've lost a lot of blood."
It seemed important to him from the very beginning that no one found out about my injury.
"The boy—"
"Eric." I interrupted him, "And I think he's almost 30, Henri," I laughed.
"What's with him?" he wanted to know.
I looked around and gave Eric a glance. He had turned on his side and closed his eyes.
"Nothing..." I shrugged, "What's with you guys?"
"Touché," Henri smirked and came a bit closer to whisper even quieter, "It might be a bit wiser to keep it a secret anyway."
Henri wanted to keep my wound a secret and now also Eric's panic attack. Slowly, it sank in.
"You mean because it makes him look weak?"
"Yes, the situation on the boat is—"
"Do you think I'm weak?" I had to restrain myself very much to keep my anger in check, not to raise my voice.
"Y/n, it's not about that, I-"
"Or you?" I interrupted him again, "With your broken rib?"
"Y/n," he said seriously, and I knew I had to listen now, even though I would have rather yelled at everyone on the boat. What were they thinking! What was Henri thinking!
"We are all strangers to each other," Henri continued quietly but seriously, "In a strange, life-threatening situation. The dynamic still seems friendly and empathetic. But I don't know if it could shift. In case it does, Eric is a serious threat."
"Then so am I."
"Right. And I, alone, can't get us through with my rib. We rely on the group, so please... just until I'm sure."
"What do you mean?"
"They seem to like my ideas."
"Your ideas are always good.."
He chuckled: "Thanks. As soon as I'm sure they all like my ideas, hold back. I make sure, you can be you. But that needs time."
"And that you can be you. I hardly believe, that anyone here is completly healthy."
He nodded before looking around and taking a bit of distance again. The next topic seemed safe enough.
"Loise knows of an island, just nearby. Maybe it's safe. We want to head there."
I exhaled.
"Loise knows her way around," he turned around and pointed to a small, thin woman with curly dark hair. "She's currently all we have."
"Alright..," I mumbled, nodding, "And food? Have you guys already talked about food?"
"While you were laughing and having fun with Eric?" Henri laughed. I felt the heat in my face.
"We didn't want to be disrespectful. Sorry."
"All good," he laughed, "Everyone survives here in their own way. Water– that's our priority once we reach the island. After that, we'll have to sort everything else out."
"Good..." I murmured, automatically holding my stomach, "Shit."
He nodded slowly and pulled me into his arms, just to whisper quietly into my ear, "And now sit back down before the wound opens up."
I took a deep breath in and out and obeyed.
"Water has priority," I murmured as I sat down next to Eric. He stretched his legs out until his feet touched mine. I wasn't sure. But I was also too tired, too hungry, and too overwhelmed by everything to think further about it – I placed a hand on his feet.
"We're going to an island. Loise knows her way around. As soon as we have water, we can think about food."
"Hm," he just said. His breathing was slow.
"Maybe we'll eat Frodo until we find something else."
Eric just growled and pulled the cat closer to him. I laughed quietly and also closed my eyes.
"Are we safe?" I heard Eric ask quietly.
"We are safe," I murmured, and shortly after, he fell asleep. And sleep came for me too.

Listen to ♡ Nightwalker by Ten
You knew damn well what you were doing. You’re the village’s resident witch. Every potion, spell, ritual, you know it. That being said, as much as you could destroy the people who live in this village with you, you choose to do good and be the healer as well. Sometimes, though, having a little fun with your practice is the best part. You’re currently in your small cottage on the edge of the village with different plants, stones, and runes around the room. You methodically move things and speak both out loud and in your mind. You kneel on the ground and throw your head back as you move your upper body in a dance-like motion, eating a few pomegranate seeds every few moments. You chant a few phrases each time you eat the seeds.
It might not be the easiest way to get railed by someone, but who’s going to stop you from summoning a demon? You know they’ll at least do you right and make sure you cum hard. Just as you reach for more seeds, you feel a hand wrap around your wrist. You keep your eyes closed for a moment but feel your heart rate spike with anticipation.
“You called, little witch?”
His voice is low and smooth, everything you want to hear right now. You look down at your pomegranate-stained fingers and see his hand wrapped around your wrist. He has claws protruding from the space where fingernails should be. They taper into sharp tips. They’re pressed against your skin, not enough to break your skin, but enough to leave indentations. His charcoal-colored claws and fingertips fade into his skin tone. His arm is veiny with toned muscles. Finally, your eyes find his. They’re an unnatural electric blue. A smirk grows on his face. You can see a sharp fang barely peeking out from beneath his upper lip.
“Hmm, little witch? Did you call for me?”
Your mouth is suddenly very dry, “Maybe I did.”
“Maybe? You hear that, Eric? It’s only a maybe. Guess we’ll just head back-”
“No!” You nearly shout, “No, I did. I summoned you.”
It’s only then that you process the second demon in the room. You had only meant to summon one, but you don’t see any issues with having a second to make you see stars. He has similarly colored claws and fingertips. His eyes are a fierce bright green, though. The second demon, who you assume to be called Eric, has pale blond hair with a cut you can almost compare to that of a wolf’s mane. The long, wavy hair falls forward in his face, only making his eyes more piercing through the curtain of hair. Eric tangles his claws through your hair, the sharp ends scratching at your scalp slightly. He grips your hair tightly, forcing your head back further so your eyes are forced to be locked on his.
“You want to have some fun, little witch?”
“Yes,” you breathe out, “Show me how you demons have fun.”
“Juyeon, you hear that?”
“Mm,” The blue-eyed demon hums, “Her little heart is beating so fast. You’re either terrified or excited beyond words, little witch.”
The first demon, who is still holding your wrist, releases it to drag his claw up your arm and wrap his long, pretty fingers around your exposed throat. The tips of his claws dig into your skin in a way that makes your eyes roll back. With your eyes now shut most of the way, you can’t see the look either demon is giving you. One of them wraps an arm around your waist. Another hand starts to tug at the laces of your corset. Juyeon’s hand tightens around your throat again, and you feel someone, you assume Eric, claim your lips in a heated kiss. One of his fangs grazes against your lip, making you gasp lightly.
“As pretty as this dress is, you’re far too dressed for our liking,” Eric growls against your lips.
The awkward angle doesn’t allow you to nod, especially with his hands still tangled in your hair. Juyeon finally releases your throat, yet you still feel the phantom touch of his claws and hand against your skin. You hear the tearing of fabric followed by the feeling of claws dragging against your thighs. Eric finally releases your hair and lets you breathe for a moment. The moment doesn’t last long. You make eye contact with Juyeon and see the lust swirling in his blue eyes. He lunges forward, forcing his way between your legs, and practically devours your lips in a harsh kiss.
Eric busies himself, tearing the rest of the fabric from your body. Soon enough, you’re entirely bare. Both men barely had clothes on to start, but they also stripped the rest of their clothing off. They have you lying out across the runes and circles you had chalked into the floor, completely spread out for them. Eric starts marking up your neck with bruises and bites while Juyeon trails his claws up and down your inner thighs again.
“Please,” you gasp when Eric bites down on a sensitive area of your skin.
“Please, what, little witch?” Eric muses against your neck, causing goosebumps to rise on your skin.
Juyeon is now lining kisses just out of reach of where you want him. You look at Eric’s green eyes and see how his pupils nearly engulf the entirety of the fluorescent color. He smirks before sucking another mark into your skin. You tangle a hand in Eric’s long hair as his kisses and bites trail lower and finally wander across the expanse of your chest. He toys with your nipples, one with his tongue and fangs, the other with his hand. A sharp breath sounds through the room as you feel his sharp claw flick your nipple. The sensation of the sharp claw against your sensitive skin makes a gush of arousal escape your needy hole.
“You’re fucking soaked, little witch. Those pomegranates really did a number on you, huh?” Juyeon teases gently, kissing your clit before moving back to your thighs and the skin just above your pussy.
You shake your head, letting out a shaky breath, “Y-you did, fuck! E-eric, please!”
“Wouldn’t it be more fun to leave him there while I take care of your leaking pussy?”
You hear Eric growl before moving his kisses back up your throat to reclaim your lips. A loud moan rips from your throat as you feel Juyeon’s tongue finally lick a wide stripe up your pussy then suck your clit between his lips. You grind down against his face while gripping on Eric’s hair. Each one of your sounds is swallowed by him. Even as Juyeon tongue fucks you through your supernova of an orgasm, neither of them gives you a break.
Eric wraps one of his clawed hands around yours and guides it to trail down his body before resting it on his cock. You instantly wrap your hand around him and know he wants your mouth around him. You turn your head and guide his tip into your mouth. The green-eyed demon groans and forces your head down on his cock fully. You choke around him, small tears springing at the corners of your eyes as you squeeze them shut. Juyeon chuckles before you feel his bunt cock head against your entrance.
“I guess we best fuck our little witch stupid.” Juyeon muses before pushing into you.
Eric matches his tone, “She’s already so far gone just from your tongue and me fucking her mouth.”
You attempt to make some sort of noise in response, but it’s garbled with Eric’s cock still far down your throat. He pulls your head off of him fully, and you look at him with a debauched expression. Another string of moans falls from your lips as Juyeon starts to thrust into you at a rough pace.
“Whatcha think, little witch?” Eric hums, “Let us lay our claim on you?”
“P- fuck– please, wanna be your cumdump, please!”
Juyeon pushes a harsh thrust into you before responding, “You heard our little witch, Eric. Let’s show her just how dumb we can fuck her.”
You find yourself tossed into at least three different positions. Juyeon cums deep inside you, only to switch places with Eric. Then on your knees, you sloppily suck Juyeon’s cock while Eric fucks the other demon’s cum back into you. It’s filthy, it’s wrong, and you fucking love it. You have bruises and bites all over your body from the harsh wooden floorboards and the attention of both men on your body.
You’re so fucked out you hardly process the sun rising outside your cottage. It’s not until Eric hisses out a curse and cums across your back. Juyeon groans, cumming all over your face, some of it landing in your hair and across your collarbones.
“Sun’s rising, little witch.” Juyeon sighs, “That’s our cue to go.”
You whine, “Do you need to?”
Eric laughs lightly, “What, you wanna hang off our cocks for the rest of your living days?”
“And dead days if I can.” You smile with a challenging glance.
Juyeon wipes a bit of cum away from your lip and kisses you lightly.
“If you really want, we’ll come back nightly.” He offers, “We have our own duties to attend to in our world.”
You pout, “Every night? Promise?”
“Promise,” Eric confirms, rubbing comforting circles into your hip, “For now, you should go down to the river and wash up. You look a right mess, little witch.”
Juyeon kisses your hair, “See you after sunset, little witch.”
As if on cue, a knock comes to your door. It’s likely one of the villagers looking for a remedy tea for the sickness that’s been cycling recently. You turn to look for your two demons to see they’re nowhere around. You sigh sadly before finding a dressing gown and a heavy fur house coat to toss over your body until you can make your way to the river later. On your way to your front door, you wipe your face and hair as best you can. Opening the door, you see one of the women of the village.
“Good mor- Oh my! Did you come down with a new illness, miss? Were you attacked in the night?” She worries.
Your neck, you forgot how aggressive your demons were with their marks.
You shake your head, “No, I’m fine. Just some rituals and remedies I was making overnight.”
She didn’t need to know what rituals you were doing or what exactly you were remedying. You have to fight a smirk from growing on your face. Just get through the day. Get through the day, and then you can get yet another release from your handsome demons.
Plot: Eric has always been protective of you, he's your best-friend, so of course he is, it comes with the territory, right? But once he interrupts another one of your dates, you start to wonder if it might be something else entirely.
Pairing: Eric | Sohn Youngjae x Gn!Reader
Warnings: Use of Y/n. A couple kisses towards the end.
Words: 2.8k
There was coincidence and then there was intention. Something you were starting to understand the difference between.
A coincidence is when you run into your friend during a date once.
A coincidence is not when you run into that friend every time you were on a date.
Your eyes flicked back and forth from the man in front of you and to the door where you swore you saw a familiar head of hair outside of the restaurant. Looking around and seeing no sign of Eric, you let out a soft breath. It must just be your imagination.
Or the trauma perhaps, of Eric somehow always ending up at your dates.
The first time, you thought it really was a coincidence. He, Juyeon and Jacob showed up “by chance” and saw you. The date became something else entirely when they decided to join you. You never went on another date with that guy.
The second time, Eric called you in the middle of your date for an emergency, which, once you arrived at his place in a frenzy, turned out to be him losing his laptop charger and wanting to borrow yours.
The reasons your dates always got cut short varied. Eric got stranded and needed a ride, he wanted some Italian and happened to go to the same restaurant as you. He and Changmin wanted to go to the arcade for the third time this week, it just so happened it was the same one you were with a date at.
You decided that Eric was doing it on purpose. But, not for the reason you wanted. Not because you wanted him to be jealous, but simply because he was protective of you. Like a sibling, a brother that wanted to make sure you never dated.
You hated it. You didn’t want Eric to protect you like a sibling, it only made your hidden feelings for him feel more pathetic.
So, whenever you had a date now, you didn’t tell Eric, hell you didn’t tell any of the boys, knowing they would let it slip to Eric anyways.
This was your third date with the guy in front of you, Sunghoon. He was cute, and nice, and you were comfortable about him. But that was it. There were no sparks, no desires. You told yourself you would have three dates with him, and if there was nothing there by the third, you would accept it. It was disappointing to say the least.
Nodding along to his story, your eyes had naturally moved to the door as someone entered. Your heart jolted as goosebumps rose up your arms. It really was Eric. But how did he know you were here? He had no idea you had been on a few dates with this guy, let alone that you had one tonight. So how did he find you? There was no way it was actually a coincidence.
As Eric’s eyes met yours he paused before he smiled. You saw a sheepishness to the action that made you realize you were probably giving him a look that could kill.
Sunghoon paused, “What’s wrong?”
Looking back at him you cleared your throat. “Oh sorry, just saw my friend come in.”
“Oh?” Looking around, Sunghoon’s eyes fell on Eric as he walked towards your table.
Eric grinned as he approached, “Y/n!” He greeted, as you eyed him suspiciously.
Eric introduced himself to Sunghoon as he sat in the seat beside you. “Wha- why are you sitting?”
Eric looked at you with an innocent smile, “Huh? Can’t I?”
You looked between him and Sunghoon, “Eric, we’re- we’re on a date.”
Eric opened his mouth in realization, and you could tell it was fake. He already knew. This was on purpose.
Looking at Sunghoon he chuckled, “Oops. Sorry. But, hey, it’s a good time to introduce myself, right?”
As you took a drink of water, your chest tightening, you missed the subtle glaring look Eric gave Sunghoon. Sunghoon rose his brow in confusion at the sudden look of murder thrown his way.
As Sunghoon tried to save the moment, he asked Eric if he was here to have dinner with friends.
Eric just smiled and shook his head. "No, I was just walking by and saw you guys. So I thought I'd say hi, maybe get some food while I'm here."
Pulling out your phone, you texted Eric, knowing you couldn't confront him in front of Sunghoon.
'I know you already went to dinner with the boys, so why are you really here?'
Eric stole your glass of water and took a drink as he checked his phone under the table. You could see him replying as you tried to talk to Sunghoon again. You might not care if nothing happens after this date, but you felt bad for the situation Eric put him in.
'I just wanted to make sure this guy was worth your time. You seem to like him enough to keep your dates a secret.'
As you read the text you spared a glance at Eric, seeing the annoyance that your secret caused.
'I kept it a secret because you always do this. How did you find out anyways?'
"Did you want to get dessert Sunghoon?" You asked innocently.
He smiled and nodded as he checked over the menu.
"I'll have the brownie." Eric added with a smile and you stared at him.
Sunghoon hesitated briefly. "Yeah sure." He smiled, obviously feeling awkward.
Looking at the text reply you sighed internally.
'Nari told me about it.'
You expected one of the boys to tell Eric about your date, which is why you kept it a secret. But your best friend knarking? You did not expect that.
Another text came in and you felt your heart jolt.
'He seems kind of boring, why would you choose him? You should have just come here with me.'
The restaurant you were at was a well known date and couple spot. Why would you come with Eric?
"I'm gonna use the bathroom." You said as you stood up, Sunghoon smiled and nodded.
Eric grinned up at you as if he was innocent in this situation. You spared him a quick glare before heading to the rest room.
Something in his text showed jealousy, but you weren't sure if you were overthinking. Taking a few minutes to gather your thoughts, and thinking of a way to save your date, or at least end it easily, you finally headed back to the table.
You noted the obvious difference in the atmosphere between the two boys, and you immedietely regretted leaving. You gave Eric a look but he avoided your gaze.
'Oh God what did he do?' You thought to yourself as you sat down.
Sunghoon cleared his throat, "I'm sorry Y/n, but something came up." He shook the phone in his hand. "I have to go. But I'll text you later okay? I'll pay the bill on the way out, so don't worry about it."
He spared Eric a glance after this comment as he stood, and something told you, you would not be getting that text.
"Oh, okay, thank you. Is everything alright?"
"Yeah just a small family emergency. I'm sorry again."
After he left the restaurant, silence lingered between you and Eric for a moment before you turned towards him.
"What did you say to him?"
Eric looked at you with a raised brow, "What? I didn't do anything!"
Which of course was a lie.
As soon as you were out of ear shot Eric gave Sunghoon a sly smile as Sunghoon swallowed nervously.
"You don't have a chance."
Sunghoon stared at Eric for a second before scoffing. "And why's that?"
"Three dates and I never heard about you. Must mean Y/n's not interested."
"Why would they tell you anything?"
"We're best-friends."
Sunghoon leaned back in his seat. "Something tells me you don't want to be."
Eric smiled and leaned back as well. "You're right. Me and Y/n are meant to be together, so I recommend you back off."
Sunghoon almost laughed. "Sure you aren't a bit delusional? If you were meant to be, wouldn't you be together by now?"
"You don't need to worry about that. All you need to know, is that you aren't worthy of even breathing in Y/n direction."
Before Sunghoon could retaliate, Eric continued. "What's Y/n's favorite color? Favorite band? Favorite food? Fears? Dreams? When you look at Y/n, do you picture your future together?"
Sunghoon let out a bewildered scoff. "Dude we've only been on three dates."
Eric leaned forward, putting his arms on the table. "Exactly. Yet, I knew the answer to all of those things after knowing Y/n for three days. You don't have a chance in hell dude. Not with me around. So I suggest you drop whatever this is while you can."
Sunghoon sighed, seeing you walking back to the table, he decided as much as he liked your company, it wasn't worth it. Grabbing his phone he cleared his throat.
Eric struggled to keep back his shit-eating grin as Sunghoon excused himself and left.
And now as you stared him down, knowing he did something, he could barely resist smiling proudly.
Sighing, you stood up as Eric followed, feeling a bit guilty as he noticed the disappointed look on your face. You weren't actually into that guy were you?
Once you got outside, you started to head towards your car, ignoring Eric as he followed right behind you.
"Did you really like him?"
Spinning around, Eric stumbled back, surprised.
"How did you even get here?"
Eric spoke sheepishly, "Hyunjae gave me a ride. Can you drop me back off?" He gave you a puppy-dog smile and you sighed softly.
"I should leave you on the sidewalk."
"But you wont...you wont right?"
Turning away you headed towards your car and Eric jogged to catch up.
"Come on Y/n, that guy was totally not worth your effort."
You stopped and faced him once again. "And how would you know that? Did you even catch his name?"
"Yeah, it was Sung...Sung-something."
You rolled your eyes. "Eric, why do you keep doing this?"
"Did you actually like him?" Eric asked again, ignoring your question.
You opened your mouth but closed it again letting out a sigh. "You are lucky I didn't because if I did and you pulled that shit again I would not be talking to you at all right now."
Eric felt relief wash over him, "Well then I did you a favor didn't I?"
"A favor? Eric you embarrassed me. At this point I'll end up alone forever because of you."
Eric pouted. "No you wont, you have me. You'll always have me."
You sighed, feeling your heart cracking a little. He would never understand.
“I’m talking about a relationship Eric, not a friendship. Its not the same.” You turned to unlocked your car as Eric spoke.
“It can be.”
You were about to respond before you paused, thinking about his words again. Turning back you looked at him with a confused gaze.
“What?”
He swallowed, his heart hammering in his chest, “It can be the same. It can be a relationship.”
Your words got stuck in your throat as your thoughts seemed to vanish. Finally finding your voice, you shook your head in bewilderment. “Wh- wait I’m confused.”
Eric sighed as he took a step closer to you, gently grabbed your arms as he stared you down.
“I don’t chase off all your suitors because I see you as a sibling Y/n. I do it because I’ve been in love with you for years.”
His words stunned you into silence as you stared at him. All this time you thought it was because he saw you as family. And now he just told you it wasn't that? That you were wrong, all this time?
All this time you spent forcing yourself on dates, hoping one day you would find someone that would make you forget your unrequited feelings. Unrequited feelings you were apparently wrong about.
“You- you’re in love with me?”
He let out a soft sigh as he nodded. You might not feel the same, he knew that. This might jeopardize your friendship, he knew that too. But you had to know. He couldn't keep living every day with this pain in his heart.
“Yes. And, even if I can't be with you. I hate the idea of letting anyone else have you. And I was afraid you would never want me like that, so, I decided to just…sabotage any chance you had with someone else. “
As the words left his mouth he felt guilt wash over him. Was he really keeping you from being happy? Would you hate him now? He avoided your eyes as he let go of your arms, wondering if this was the last time he would really be close with you.
You could see both the sincerity of his words on his face, and the guilt at his admission of why he always ruined your possible relationships.
“You should have told me sooner Eric.” He met your eyes, and you continued. “We could have avoided all of it.”
His chest tightened. “All of what?”
Your heart was pounding painfully as you felt short of breath. “Thinking our love was unrequited.”
Your words ran through Eric's brain a few times before he really seemed to process them. “Our love?”
You nod softly, as you struggled to find your breath. “I've been in love with you for years too Eric.”
The two of you stared each other down for a moment as Eric processes what you said. All this time, you felt the same.
"Then...why go on these dates?"
You let out a sad chuckle. "So I could get over you."
He let out a breath of realization before he suddenly grabbed you and pulled you into his chest. You grunted in surprise as you now rested your head in the crook of his neck.
You could feel his pounding heart as his breath was uneven. He spoke into your ear, desperation and excitement in his voice.
“Say you meant it, say you’re not joking.”
You smiled softly, “I mean it Eric. Its not a joke.”
He pulled away from you and stared at you intensely, the ghost of a smile on his face.
“Do you mean it?” You asked.
He nodded as the faint smile turned into a grin as he cupped your face in his hands.
“I mean it.”
Your smile mirrored his own as he let out a happy giggle. His eyes scanned your face before lingering on your lips. You felt your ears and neck burn hotter.
"I've always wanted to kiss you." He met your eyes. "Can I?"
You bit the inside of your lip nervously as you nodded.
Grinning he gently pulled your face closer as he leaned in. Your lips brushed together as his eyes stayed locked with yours. Slowly you closed your eyes as he smiled just as his lips met yours.
He was still for a second as the moment sank in, before he slowly started to move his lips with yours. His fingers gripped your face a little tighter as he struggled to contain himself.
Moving his hands down to your waist, he pulled you closer to him as he gave in a little and deepened the kiss.
Your whole body seemed to tingle and feel light as you wrapped your arms around his neck, leaning deeper into the kiss. Eric let out a involuntary sigh at this as his grip tightened and he deepened the kiss further.
You don't know how long you got lost in the embrace, but finally pulling apart to catch your breath your eyes caught before you both broke into grins. Eric let out a soft chuckle as he gently caressed your cheek.
"I really do love you Y/n. I'm sorry it took me this long to tell you."
You felt almost overwhelmed as you smiled softly at him. "And I really do love you too Eric. I could have said something too. I think we were both just afraid to ruin our friendship."
Eric wrapped his arms around you and pulled you closer again as he smiled at you. "I think so too. But hey, now our friendship isn't ruined, its just upgraded."
You giggled, "You're right."
He kissed you again, smiling into your lips. Pulling away he let out a sigh as he hugged you tightly.
"Now I get to be the only one to take you on dates."
You smiled as you rested your head on his chest. "Good. You owe me a few anyway after the ones you ruined."
Eric blew a raspberry and you chuckled. "Ruined, please. I'll take you on better dates than those guy's ever could."
"Oh yeah?"
He nodded as he rested his head against yours. "Just watch."
As you giggled softly Eric chuckled, swaying slightly as he held you against him. He'll do whatever he needs to, to prove that he was right. You really were meant to be with him.

A/N: I know this is quite the long fic... and I honestly struggled a lot writing it, only being able to make significant progress the past few days... so I truly hope to get some feedback on this.
“There’s been an increase of hybrid abduction in the past few weeks”, the leading commander of the task unit announced loudly, his voice carrying the heaviness of the situation.
Everyone inside the room stared with serious expressions at the presentation, the graphic showing the spike of abductions.
“There have been leads those are connected to a large hybrid smuggling ring. While we stopped a few transports, we still need to find the head of the organisation. So take all the leads we have and find that godforsaken bastard. That’s all for today! Dismissed!” The commander waved with his hand, watching how his subordinates left the room.
You stared at the pictures in your open folder with a crease between your brows. The unit had known about the abductions and the smuggling ring for a while now but nothing seemed to work. Every lead you received was too late. Every time you arrived at the scene only remnants of the ring were left. Scattered clothes, dead and heavily malnourished hybrids that didn’t make it.
A shiver ran down your spine. You knew too well what they had gone through. Sometimes you considered the found bodies to be the lucky ones. Their suffering and fear had finally ended, while the remaining ones still had to deal with torture and more unfathomable things and survivors were plagued with trauma, nightmares and anxiety.
“Detective Lin.”
You looked up, snapping out of your thoughts when you heard the voice of your superior. “I’m sorry, sir.”
He sighed deeply and rubbed over his tired looking face. Over the few years you had worked under this unit, he had aged immensely. His once dark brown hair had now streaks of grey in them, his sun kissed face had deep lines all over it and his eyes - once full of life - seemed to dread every second of his existence. “Are you alright?”
You blinked a few times before a soft smile appeared on your lips. “Still the dad of the unit”, you snickered and shook your head playfully. “I’m alright, sir. You should take more care about yourself, if I may say so.”
The commander laughed dryly, knowing full well you were right. “Not until I know everyone in this community is where they belong.”
Now you were the one to sigh. “This unit needs you. Don’t overwork yourself.”
“I could tell you to do the same.” The commander tilted his head as he stared at you with a playful twinkle in his eyes. “I know this case is getting to you on a personal level. If I could I would remove you from this case but we need your senses to have at least a small break-through.”
You grabbed the pages and neatly stacked them inside the folder again before you stood up, your expression tense from anger. “I would ignore your command and work on it either way. I don’t need your permission to help my kind.”
He stood up as well and rounded the corner of the table, joining your side as you two made your way to leave the meeting room. “I know, I know. That’s the only reason you’re still on it. You’d go rogue otherwise and put yourself and probably others in danger.”
You relaxed again, turning your head with a bright grin. “You know me too well.”
He laughed in amused defeat and patted your shoulder, as if he was telling you to stay in line and not do something reckless. With that he left for his work space and you followed his back with your eyes until he was out of your sight.
You made your way to your own desk, nodding at your colleagues who you passed. Technically this was the last meeting for today and you were free to leave. Yet you, and most other colleagues too, decided to stay after hours working on the case. Once you reached your desk, you placed the folder on the surface and sat down on your spinning chair.
“Time to find a new lead.” You sighed deeply and started the computer, quickly typing away on your keyboard. Your eyes flitted across the screen, the pictures and headlines of articles reflecting in your eyes.
At one point your thoughts drifted away from the case and got mixed with your own memories:
You shivered from the cold, having sat down in the farthest corner of the cage. You had wrapped your arms around your legs, which were pulled against your chest, trying to preserve any warmth left. The thin clothes on your body hung loose and were mostly torn to shreds as well.
Your skin was covered in bruises and scars, some better healed than others. You received at least half of them during the rough transport. They had picked you up and thrown you into a transporter with no isolation nor security. After they reached their destination, they dragged you out and threw you in this cage in the basement.
While you stayed there one man came down every morning and threw some moldy bread and stale water in a bottle towards you. When he wanted to get the empty bottle back, he used an electric stick to keep you in one corner of the cage while coming inside.
Sometimes that man enjoyed your yelps of pain when he electrocuted you just for his own enjoyment.
You were nothing but a child back then. You barely understood what happened around you or why they even kept you in a cage.
You snapped out of your thoughts again, staring at your screen with distant eyes for a moment longer. Even though years had passed since that incident, the memories felt like it only happened a few days ago. You rubbed over your arm, the phantom pain of your bruises haunting your body.
It had been a miracle back then that you were found by authorities before anything worse could have happened to you. Even now you struggled to believe there was a fate worse than what you had experienced.
Only the pictures in your folder told you differently.
With one last glance at the pictures on your computer screen you decided to leave it for the day. You closed all the files and turned the pc off, cleaning your desk afterwards.
Right as you were about to turn off the little lamp on your desk, the red light of your telephone started blinking.
Your hand halted mid air as you stared at the light of the phone station. You had the sound turned off since the ringing hurt your sensitive ears. Instead the light would blink whenever you got a call. Which rarely happened. And never after working hours.
“Detective Lin?” You said questioningly into the receiver after picking up the phone.
“Thank goodness, you’re still there”, someone on the other side of the line breathed in relief. “Can you come to the emergency call centre on the first floor? We got a situation that could use your help.”
You didn’t ask what situation it could have been. The second you heard they wanted you at the emergency call centre, you already had grabbed all your belongings. “I’ll be there in three.”
With that you slammed the phone back on its station and rushed away from your workplace. Instead of using the elevator from the fourth floor, you pushed through the doors of the staircase.
Your steps steadily echoed through the air with every step you took. It was rare for your colleagues to ask for your help. While all of you were equals and worked for the same cause, they kept their distance from you. Simply because you were a hybrid and your hardened scales that covered parts of your skin seemed to freak a lot of people out.
Or they thought of you as something dangerous. It was well known that hybrids tended to be stronger than humans - even if they were the weakest kind of hybrid like a hamster or a mouse. You yourself weren’t considered a dangerous species as well. Just a very desired one on the black market, same as your animal counterpart.
The pangolin was probably the most traded animal on the black market. Their scales of hardened keratin were supposed to have some special healing abilities in several ancient medicinal practices. Some rich assholes even liked to have them as pets since they looked rather adorable despite their large claws.
The biggest difference to your animal counterpart was the fact you as a hybrid were able to regrow lost scales like normal strands of hairs. A fact that made you as a hybrid way more valuable than the animal itself.
You skipped the last step and jumped to the ground, running to the door towards the first floor. You rushed along the hallway and pushed through the last door without knocking, finally reaching the emergency call centre.
“Over here”, someone called out.
You quickly followed their voice and hurried over to them, only stopping right behind their chair. With a short glance at the screen, you saw they had an ongoing call. You furrowed your brows, wondering why you were called now.
“I don’t have much. He seemed frightened and confused but he confirmed being a hybrid. I thought maybe you could get through to him.” The operator explained to you shortly, getting up and offering you their chair.
You nodded hesitantly and sat down, grabbing the headset and putting it on. “Hello?” You heard rapid breathing but nothing else. “If you’re not able to speak right now, please tap the phone twice.” You waited for any sound but except for the rapid breathing there was nothing else.
“My name is detective Lin and I’m here to help you, okay? I heard from my colleague that you’re a hybrid? I’m one myself, can you tell me what kind of hybrid you are?” You tried to sound as reassuring and kind as possible, wishing to calm the hybrid as much as possible so they would answer you.
“Eric.” His voice sounded hoarse as if he hadn't had something to drink for a while now.
“Eric? That’s your name? Okay Eric, can you tell me where you are?” You pressed gently, needing the information so you could actually help him.
“At a gas station. I don’t know where exactly. I’m hiding in the forest nearby.” His breathing had slowed down considerably, though he still only spoke in a whisper.
You turned to your colleague and mouthed to them that they should track the phone call, hoping to get the exact location that way.
“Alright, can you tell me what happened? Why are you hiding?”
His breathing hitched momentarily and if you hadn’t your sensitive hybrid hearing you probably would have missed it. “They kidnapped a hybrid. They grabbed them inside the toilet rooms of the gas station and dragged them away to a transporter. I’m hiding so they won’t get me too.”
“Are they still there?”
“I don’t know, maybe.” He whimpered softly, making your heart ache.
You knew what kind of terror he must be experiencing right now. At that moment your colleague placed a sticky note with the address in front of you, silently telling you they had sent a police car to check the situation.
“Hey, there are some colleagues on their way to your location. Do you think you can hold on until then?”
“Are they hybrids too?”
You sighed softly and shook your head: “No, probably not. Most hybrids aren’t in the active field, so I’m afraid the two will be humans.”
“Can’t you come?”
“Me?”
Your eyes widened in surprise at the request. For a moment you were too stunned to speak and simply turned to the operator with a questioning look in your gaze.
They nodded and waved one of the technicians over to you. With a few adjustments on your phone, which they had asked for quietly, they transferred the emergency call to your mobile phone. That way you were able to keep in contact with Eric while you made your way to the location.
“Alright, I’m on my way.” You replaced the headset with your phone, relieved you heard his breathing and whimpers. With a short gesture of your hand you bid your goodbye and left for your car. On your way down to the garage you also texted your commander, informing him of the situation.
During the ride to the gas station you kept Eric talking, needing the reassurance he was still with you. For some reason you feared the smugglers were still around and would get him before you could reach him.
Though when you reached the remote gas station you only saw the car of your colleagues parked to the side. You parked beside them and got out of the car, looking around with narrowed eyes.
You colleagues just exited the gas station, heading towards the toilets at the back. You hurried towards them, joining them with a short nod.
Technically you were there to get Eric and make sure he was alright, but you remembered what he told you about another hybrid being kidnapped on the toilets. You had to see the crime scene, you needed to make your own picture of it, hoping to see a clue or connection to the other cases.
“Hey Eric? I’m here now. I’ll just check the toilets before I’m going to look for you, yeah? My colleagues are with me in case something happens. But don’t you worry, okay?”
He didn’t answer you this time. You only heard some rustling and the sound of his breathing. Therefore you focused on your surroundings for a moment.
As your colleagues opened the doors, you immediately wrinkled your nose in disgust. The smell of urine and other unspeakable liquids invaded your nostrils against your will. You quickly raised your hand and pressed the sleeve of your jacket against your mouth and nose. Even though every fibre of your body was against it, you stepped inside the toilets and looked around. Trash and used paper towels littered the ground, the walls and doors to the toilets were covered in stickers and tags.
You made a face, knowing there was no way of finding any kind of useful forensic evidence. There was simply too much of everything around. “Guess that won’t do”, you sighed as you turned around your own axis.
You came to a halt when you noticed someone standing in the entrance. At the same time the connection of the phone call ended with a click. Confused, you turned to look at your phone in your hand and then back up at the person.
The colleagues, who had checked the stalls just now, came back out and were about to shoo him away, when you stopped them with one word.
The person had stepped back, as if he was afraid of your colleagues. He held a phone in his hand and his eyes flitted back to your form.
You tilted your head and dropped your hand as you took one step closer towards him. “Eric?” Even though his sweet honey scent barely managed to overpower the gross smell surrounding you, you picked up the hybrid in the air.
He nodded slowly, staring at you with his mouth slightly agape. Eric moved further into the room, rounding you slowly.
Your colleagues told you they’d leave again since there was no sign of a crime. You nodded, barely paying them any attention anymore. Something about Eric pulled you in and you couldn’t avoid your eyes for even a moment.
“Detective Lin”, he breathed out, his eyes roaming over your form. He reached the mirror and leaned against the wall, tilting his head in wonder.
You nearly missed how he wiped something away from the mirror and froze the second you realised what he did. “Wait!” You leaped forward and pushed him aside, staring at the remnants of some letters. “What was that?” You turned your head to look at him, demanding an answer.
“What was what?”
“Don’t play around! You just wiped over this message! What was written on the mirror?” You hit the sink with your hands and turned around fully, glaring at the other hybrid with annoyance.
His eyes widened in surprise. “I did? Shoot, I’m so sorry! I didn’t mean to wipe something away. Do you think that’s from the smugglers?”
You crossed your arms over your chest. Something about him rang your alarm bells inside your head, yet you couldn’t pinpoint what exactly it was. Still, you decided to keep your guard up. You sighed deeply, reminding yourself of the disgusting smell surrounding you. “Let us go outside, please.”
Eric nodded and stepped outside, holding the door open for you.
“How come you don’t seem as scared as you sounded on the phone?”
He stopped at the edge of the parking lot, contemplating your question for a moment. After a while he shrugged with his shoulders, slowly turning towards you. His eyes implored yours when he said: “I guess, I just feel safe with another hybrid around. Especially a hybrid detective.”
You snorted and shook your head, avoiding looking him in the eyes. You felt the heat creep up your neck and onto your cheeks. Before he could notice something, you turned around and brushed your hair out of your face, keeping your hand on the top of your head. “Alright, let us go somewhere to eat something and then you can tell me what you saw.” You motioned for Eric to get inside of your car and shortly followed after him.
The ride itself almost felt stuffed, despite the air conditioner running on full power. Neither of you said anything, and while you tried focusing on the road you couldn't ignore his presence at all.
Your instincts told you something wasn't adding up but you had absolutely no evidence to know what it was exactly. Additionally your head refused to even consider another hybrid being the reason for all the recent abductions of hybrids.
Though your instincts rarely betrayed you.
The interrogation with Eric over some dull fast food brought no new leads. You had noted down every minuscule detail but when you compared them to the information you already got, nothing added up.
You sat at your desk again and stared at the open files thrown over the surface. The desperation to find something gnawed at your insides and slowly suffocated you.
Before you could despair completely, the leading commander called for an emergency meeting. Within seconds everyone jumped up and rushed to the meeting room, eager to know what the commander had to say.
“We got a new lead”, he announced as he walked into the room. The few conversations immediately died down. “Someone noticed a suspicious looking truck standing in the parking lot of a school.”
“How is it connected to the abductions”, you asked with a raised eyebrow. Sometimes truckers use parking lots to rest there for a while before continuing their long routes across countries and states.
The commander nodded shortly, thankful one of his detectives questioned the intel they got. “According to the caller the truck has been standing there for several days now and he claims to have heard voices from inside.”
You nearly jumped up from your seat, ready to bolt and get to that truck in an instant.
“I need two officers, who are willing to check out the situation. I don’t want to send a whole squad for a possible prank”, he explained with a grim expression, “still everyone, who isn't going, has to stay on standby in case it's real.”
Your arm shot into the air. “I volunteer.”
“I had hoped you'd say that”, the commander chuckled with a soft smile. “I need your keen senses to check this out.”
When you arrived at the parking lot with one of your colleagues, you hesitated to step out of the car. Your eyes were glued towards the parked truck. You tried to mentally note down every little detail you could see before you’d use your other senses for intel.
The second you stepped out of the car and moved towards the truck, your pulse spiked. Nervousness creeped up your back and had a tight grip on your neck. It controlled your every movement.
Your colleague checked the front cabin, silently motioning to you that it was empty. He gave you a sign to walk around the truck and meet with him at the back again.
You nodded once and cautiously started walking. You moved forward while keeping somewhat close to the ground, checking underneath the truck as well. Though you didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary.
At the back of the truck you stepped several feet away and raised your weapon, pointing it at the closed door. You nodded towards your colleague, who stood at the door and waited for your signal to open it.
He pulled it open with force and immediately got out of your shooting line, backing away as well and pointing his weapon at the open entrance too.
Nothing happened and both of you quickly realised the truck was actually empty.
You secured your weapon again and walked towards the open doors. Though as soon as you reached the edge of the truck, you held your breath and hurriedly stepped back again.
“What’s wrong?”
Your colleague looked at you with a raised eyebrow. He took over and walked to the truck, checking the empty inside.
“It reeks of death”, you told him with your arm pressed over your nose and mouth. Ever so slowly you dared to move closer again. Your eyes wandered over the floor and walls, seeing remnants of blood.
“There are no bodies here though.” Your colleague jumped on the platform and walked into the area. Even he wrinkled his nose in disgust, but you were sure he only smelled the stench of blood and maybe a mixture of excrements in there as well. “Are you sure someone died inside of this?”
You shook your head. “I don’t think someone actually died. But those, who were trapped in here, were on the verge of death before they got out.” You hesitantly took one more whiff and stepped back again. “I smell several hybrid breeds, though the scent is faint and I can’t pinpoint what kind they were nor how many.” Your throat suddenly closed up, the urge to throw up overwhelming you. Tears pricked at the corners of your eyes as you fought against the tension inside of you.
Still, you had to run a few metres away from the truck so you could pull your arm away and greedily suck in fresh air through your mouth and nose. Your chest still constricted for several minutes, urging you to throw up but you pulled through.
With a large distance you walked back around the truck to the front, deciding to investigate the driver cabin. To your surprise it wasn’t locked and you easily pulled open the door. You smelled sweat, old fast food and something that made your skin crawl.
You climbed up the steps and looked over the seats, noticing a memo pad next to the driver’s seat. You leaned over, noticing his sweet honey scent even stronger now. Your thoughts raced inside your head, questioning why you smelled Eric’s scent inside this truck. Most importantly you were sure he wasn’t hurt but that would make only one other option the possible outcome - and you still didn’t want to believe he could be part of the smuggling.
You grabbed the memo pad and the pencil next to it, gently scribbling over the surface and revealing a message.
“Abandoned opera out of town, auction starts 11pm”
At the bottom of the note you even saw a date and your jaw clenched. Almost automatically you pulled out your phone and dialed the number of the commander.
You told him about the message and the bloodied back of the truck, but you kept secret about having smelled Eric. The commander promised to send an investigation team and that you should return the second they took over. In the meantime he would prepare for another emergency meeting.
You shortly updated your colleague about the situation, before you walked back to the car and sat down on the passenger seat again. You kept the door open and stared out into the distance, deep in thought.
To be honest with yourself, you liked Eric. When you spent time with him at the fast food restaurant, he definitely made an impression. He was funny, kind, a little bit silly but still incredibly charming. You would lie if you said you didn’t have fun spending time with him. You would also lie to yourself and anyone else, if you said you hadn’t thought of texting him at all since then.
Your fingertips twitched, the idea of simply messaging him now twirling around in your mind. You watched your hands move around as if they didn’t belong to your body, seeing how they turned on your phone and dialed the number you somehow had memorised already. Your thumb hovered above the call button and before you knew it, you had pressed it.
It only rang once before you heard his distant voice from the speaker. You ever so slowly raised your hand with the phone to your ear, hearing him call out again.
“Hello?”
“Eric?”
Silence. For a moment you heard nothing but his breathing and your own loud heartbeat.
“I was wondering when you’d call me, Detective Lin.”
A small grin tugged at the corners of your lips upon hearing his cheeky statement. “So you missed being interrogated already?” Somehow flirting came naturally to you when you talked with him. You leaned against the seat and pulled your legs up to the edge of the car. “Why did you wait for my call though?”
Eric laughed and you could picture him shaking his head. “Didn’t your boss tell you I was the one calling because of the truck?”
Almost instantly you sat up straight again, barely missing bumping your head on the roof of the car. “What?”
His laugh stopped and his tone suddenly became serious. “I pass that parking lot every day on my way to work. I thought it was suspicious, that’s why I called.”
You stepped out of the car again, turning around your own axis. For some reason you felt being watched all of a sudden and you couldn’t shake that feeling off. “I haven’t said a word about the truck”, you whispered, unconsciously holding your breath right after.
“Isn’t that the reason you called?” Eric kept quiet for a few heartbeats. “That would have been the only logical connection in my book, unless-”
“Unless?” You exhaled shakily, somehow fearing what other conclusion he came up with.
“Unless you want a second date.”
You snorted in disbelief, shaking your head as you started to relax again. “That wasn’t a date back then.”
“So you’re asking me on a first date.”
“I’m not”, you laughed, hearing him snicker cheekily as well.
“It was worth a try”, he told you after a while, almost sounding woefully. His tone quickly switched with his next question. “Anyway, why’d you call then?”
You weren’t able to dwell on the change as the investigation team arrived at the parking lot. “To be honest, you already answered the question I had. I gotta go back to work, talk to you soon.”
You cut the call and concentrated on your job again, making sure the team was aware of the things you had noticed before you and your colleague drove back to the headquarters.
The second the two of you stepped out of the elevators at headquarters you got ushered to the second emergency meeting that day.
The meeting dragged on for hours and you felt how your energy and motivation level sunk lower and lower.
All of you knew what had to be done but for some reason some of your colleagues were opposed to the idea - including your commander.
“Can we stop talking around the issue at hand?” You groaned and dragged one hand over your face before you straightened yourself again. “I will go undercover on the side of a hybrid and while I know it will be dangerous, I won’t be alone with some of you going undercover as buyers. And if push comes to shove, I trust you will save me.”
They shared a few glances with each other before your commander sighed in defeat. “Fine, but the second something doesn’t go according to plan you’ll get pulled out there.”
You bowed to him. “Understood.”
He still didn’t seem convinced but instead of voicing his concerns he continued with the meeting, going over every minute detail for the new undercover mission.
A few days after the emergency meeting you walked through the town at night. The commander had pointed out an area with the highest abduction rate and you strolled around that place in hopes of getting caught.
While you had to pretend of being unaware of your surroundings, you couldn’t help but notice the eerie silence around the street. Most of the lanterns weren’t lit and the few that shared some light, casted distorted shadows along the ground and walls.
You nearly jumped when your phone suddenly rang. You looked at the caller ID, immediately recognising the number. For a moment longer you stared at your display before accepting the call and raising the phone to your ear. “Eric?”
“Get out of there! Now!”
You stopped, rooted to the ground. “What?” Your thoughts tumbled over each other and you struggled to form anything coherent.
“I told you to get out of there immediately!”
Ever so slowly you turned around, looking behind you and to every dark corner of the street. “How do you know where I am?” A shiver ran down your spine.
“That’s beside the point! I need you to run now!” Eric frantically yelled into his phone.
His panic swept over to you and you felt your heartbeat increasing as adrenalin got pumped through your veins. Your body automatically prepared for whatever was coming, even before you knew what it was.
“Eric, I’m not leaving”, you tried your best to sound as nonchalant as possible. “I’m on a mission here.”
“For the love of everything that is dear to me”, he whispered exasperated, “this is not a joke, Detective Lin. You have to run! NOW!”
Right as his command ended, screeching tires stopped right next to you on the street. You barely managed to turn your head before you saw how the sliding door of a dark grey transporter opened and two bulky men jumped out.
You stared at them with wide eyes, frozen to the spot. Old memories flashed before your eyes as they grabbed your upper arms.
One of them snatched the phone out of your hand, grinning evilly as he slammed it to the ground, silencing Eric’s calls in the process, and stepping on it to destroy it completely.
They pulled you into the transporter like you were nothing but a ragdoll. You got thrown in the back, groaning from the pain and knowing your skin would bruise from that alone.
The men closed the doors behind them and told the driver to take off before they turned back to look at you.
“This looks like a feisty one”, the taller one said with the same evil grin on his lips.
“Whatever, we’re not testing”, the other cut in with a stern look in his eyes, “deal with this quickly.”
You barely even comprehend what he meant by that, before the taller one got closer and knocked you out with one punch to your jaw.
You woke up with a splitting headache and a dull throbbing of your jaw. A quiet groan escaped your lips while your eyelids fluttered open.
Even though there was only spare and dim lighting, you noticed the metal bars around you. Despite being awake now, you stayed in your position and assessed your surroundings.
You heard hectic bustling further down the hall, quiet sniffles, clattering teeth and shallow breaths closer to you. Ever so slowly you pushed yourself up, noticing you were barely able to sit properly in the small cage you were in. Carefully, you turned around, taking everything in, that you could make out in the dim light.
There were dozens of cages in various sizes lined up around you. Most of them were occupied with other hybrids - all of them in bad shape. The smaller ones looked severely beaten up while the bigger ones were heavily malnourished and all of them appeared to have broken spirits.
You scooted to the side of your cage, leaning against the cold metal bars. “Hey”, you whispered silently, catching the attention of a deer hybrid next to you. “Do you know where we are?”
They looked at you with utter horror, shaking their head violently and refusing to give you any sort of verbal answer.
“If I were you, kid, I wouldn’t talk so much.”
You turned and saw a feline hybrid sitting in the cage across from you. “Why?” You crawled closer to the male, curious about his intel.
He scoffed mirthlessly before he came closer himself, emerging from the shadows and showing his scar littered body.
You gasped and stared at him with wide eyes. “Did they do this to you?”
“That’s what happens when you defy humans.” His voice was laced with regret and his dark, sad eyes finally met yours. “There’s only one last hope, most of us cling to that now.”
“The police saving you?” You asked, knowing your colleagues would be at the auction. Though you didn’t want to crush his hope, fully aware the police didn’t have enough money to bid on every hybrid and while they could raid the place, your commander decided they would only do so if the head of the organisation would show their face at the event. Even if they would raid the opera there was no guarantee they would catch everyone and free every hybrid.
The hybrid in front of you laughed dryly. “As if the police ever cared about us hybrids.” He spat on the ground, showing you clearly how much he hated them. “I’m talking about TBZ.” He leaned back again, hiding his face in the shadows once more. A soft chuckle escaped his lungs. “Though it will be quite hard for hybrids to join the auction as buyers.”
You tilted your head in confusion. “What do you mean? Who are TBZ?”
Before he could answer a loud metal clang made you jump in surprise and let all the other hybrids cower in fear. “Shut your mouth, dirty scum”, a human with an electric stick shouted, glaring at you and the tiger hybrid.
He crouched down and turned to the tiger, tapping the metal cage with the stick. “I would have thought you had learned your lesson, Mr. New. Guess, I was wrong.” He pressed the button on his electric stick, letting little white lights spark the metal of the cage and jolting the tiger hybrid.
“Stop it!” You called out, reaching your hand through the metal bars in a fruitless attempt to stop the human. “I said, STOP IT!”
This time the human looked over his shoulder, still pressing the button and electrocuting the tiger. He raised an eyebrow as his eyes wandered over your form. “Who do we have here”, he mused with a sick grin on his face, finally turning around completely and letting off of the hybrid. “Did our royalty finally decide to wake up from their deep slumber?”
You gritted your teeth but did everything to keep your face neutral and emotionless.
He laughed out loud, his eyes crazed as he waddled over to you in his crouched position. “You are a feisty one! So Tango and Whiskey were right! Oh, it will be such a joy to break you like all the others.” Without even blinking he tapped the electric stick against your cage and pressed the button.
The pain immediately surged through your body, your muscles tensing uncontrollably from it. Yet, you didn’t want to give him the satisfaction of making a sound.
When he turned off the stick, you slumped down to the ground, unable to move. “I know it’s just a short time between us two but it will mean so much more”, he giggled and turned the stick on again. He watched you flap on the ground like a fish out of water, waiting with bated breath for you to make a sound. “Oh, darling, I will make you scream sooner rather than later.”
“Delta! Stop torturing the beasts and help us prepare the fucking auction!”
The man with the codename Delta turned off the electric stick with a loud whine - as if his parents just told him to do laundry instead of playing his video game. Still, he turned to you one more time, pressing his face between two metal bars. “We’re seeing each other again in no time, darling.”
“DELTA! Don’t make me come back there!”
Delta stood up with an annoyed growl. “I’m fucking coming already, Charlie. Get off my dick, man.” With that he left and moved back to the front of the hall.
“Are you alright, kid?” The tiger hybrid whispered in the lowest voice he could muster.
“I had worse”, you simply told him, turning your head and giving him a half assed smile. While your statement technically wasn’t a lie, this was a first and you already knew should you experience being electrocuted again you’d rather wish to die.
“That was quite brave of you, kid. And incredibly stupid.”
“Weird form of saying ‘thank you’, Mr. New.”
“Call me Chan-hee”, he told you, hesitating momentarily, “and thank you.”
You introduced yourself as well, still lying on the ground. You used the moment of peace to mull over the intel you got from this short and painful interaction.
Those jerks used the NATO phonetic alphabet for their code names and with Delta following the orders of a man called Charlie, you assumed each name had a specific rank to them as well. Therefore the guys kidnapping you must have been quite low in rank, while Charlie and Delta should be in the third and fourth position of the ranking. That would mean there were only three more above them in rank and the one at the top must be called Alpha.
You startled awake again from the loud sound of metal scratching over concrete. With a groan you pushed yourself up, groggily realising you must have passed out while lying on the floor.
“Wakey, wakey you bastards! It’s time to shine! The auction begins in a few hours!” Delta stopped next to your cage again. “Look, who is awake again”, he lowered his voice to speak with you, grinning like a maniac, “I’ll take especially good care of you, darling.”
You wanted to hurl right this instant but you kept your face passive and forced your body to stay neutral. Whatever that meant, you would endure it. For the sake of the mission, for the sake of the other hybrids, for the sake of your sanity.
The cages got moved to the front of the hall, people pulled the hybrids out of their confinements and dragged them away. Others returned with them, chaining them up along the walls. You noticed how they had a change of clothes and seemed to have bathed in some way.
You silently watched how dozens of hybrids were dragged away and brought back. Meanwhile you stayed in your cage until the very end. Even when the deer hybrid behind you and Chan-hee next to you got dragged away, you got left behind.
Until Delta came up to your cage again. “It’s your time to shine, darling.” He threw a collar into the cage and ordered you to put it on, tapping his electric stick against the bars when you weren’t fast enough. He then grabbed the leash that was attached to the collar, opened the cage and harshly pulled you out.
You stumbled forward, falling on your knees and hands. The yanking on the leash tightened the collar around your throat, making it hard to breathe.
Delta laughed again. “You wanna go on all four? Like the animal you are? Sure, be my guest!”
“Pangolins are bipedal”, you grunted and pushed yourself up on your feet.
“And I couldn’t care less”, he told you, his face only inches from yours, before he moved back and kicked you in your stomach, making you fall to the ground again. “So now, crawl.”
You ignored the humiliation and silently followed him out of the hall. Your knees hurt from the bare concrete floor and you knew, you scraped them already.
Not soon enough you reached something that looked like the showers of a football stadium. Grimy tiles and six shower heads on each side of the room.
“Undress.”
You looked at the man, waiting for him to turn around or at least leave the room. Though the second he pulled on the leash and made you come closer to his face again, telling you the same command through gritted teeth, you knew you had to strip in front of him.
With glares that could kill, you started undressing yourself. You let your clothes drop to the ground where you stood, not even trying to cover your nakedness. You were too damn proud to give in to his humiliation tactics.
His eyes roamed over your body, a sneer marking his face. He looked at your scale like plates covering your sides, shoulders, upper arms and hips. “You’re an abomination of nature”, he stated after a while. “Disgusting.” Delta then motioned you to go to one of the shower heads, telling you to get clean.
You froze in place, the gasp stuck in your throat when the ice cold water descended on your body. You waited a moment longer, hoping the water would turn warm against all odds. With trembling hands you started scrubbing your body.
Once you were done, you stepped away from the water and back to Delta. You tried to keep your body from shivering with the cold wetness clinging to your skin and hair, staring at the man and waiting for a command.
He threw a moldy smelling towel at you and told you to dry yourself, calling for someone with fresh clothes. Delta watched you intently as you got dressed again, grinning at the outfit he picked for you.
On one hand you were quite surprised how nice the clothes were to the touch. On the other hand you knew better looking merchandise got a higher price. Additionally his choice barely covered the intimate parts of your body, showing the hybrid traits that you owned.
You noticed everyone got clothes that highlighted their traits when Delta brought you back to the others, chaining you up at the very front of the line. “Remember to look pleasantly to the eye when on stage”, he told you with a smirk, zapping you one last time before he got called somewhere else.
Soon enough someone else unchained you again and dragged you towards a heavy curtain. He pushed you into a cage again, this one appearing to be made out of silver with an intricate design. Once the door of the cage got shut, some sort of mechanism pulled you upwards.
You grabbed the bars to your sides, trying to stabilise yourself from the sudden swaying.
“Ladies and gentlemen, I am pleased to welcome you to a night of wonders and exclusiveness.”
Your attention got pulled to the voice beyond the curtain.
“I’ll guarantee for a show that you’ll remember. The first few options for you to buy are already among us.” The voice laughed and seemingly walked around the stage. “All of our cute little waiters and waitresses can be bought tonight. You’ll recognise them from their maid outfits.”
You made a grimace from just imagining the sick and twisted mind behind that sort of display.
“Obviously that is not all! Tonight we offer you 37 hybrids, ranging from prey to predator, from common to extremely rare. While we won’t bid on this one until the very end, let me introduce you to the highlight of our night!”
With that the curtain opened and the cage moved forward into the bright light.
You squinted your eyes, slightly turning your head to the side from the brightness alone. You heard the audience murmur and whisper, until the auctioneer told them what breed you were, additionally with your age, weight, height and other measurements. You stared at him in bewilderment, a shiver running down your back at the thought someone must have taken all these while you were unconscious.
The cage lowered slowly and the lights didn’t blind you anymore. Your eyes trailed over the audience. The bright lights on the stage compared to the dim light in the audience made it hard for you to see any details.
Still, you were able to make out that every person wore a mask that covered at least half of their face. Women fanned themselves with feathered fans, men smoked cigars and all of them chattered joyfully like this was just another charity event.
“Now, let us begin with our first hybrid”, the auctioneer called out, waving his hand for the henchmen bringing the hybrids in.
Again the auctioneer told the audience what they saw in front of them and finished his introduction with the lowest price accepted.
Buyers rapidly raised their number cards, the price jumping higher and higher in steps of one thousand.
“Sold to the man with the number 24!”
You saw how one of the henchmen hurried over to a man with a silver mask sitting at a table far to the left. They had a short interaction, you assumed a check got signed, before the sold hybrid got dragged towards the man.
Your attention got pulled back to the stage with the next auction. With each new hybrid the starting price got higher and higher. When it was finally Chan-hee’s turn you noticed a change in his behaviour.
He almost appeared indifferent, confident even on stage. His eyes flitted to the number cards in the air and the corner of his mouth always twitched upwards when certain numbers were called out.
Confused, you turned your attention to the audience again. To your surprise you suddenly realised how the bought hybrids weren’t in the audience anymore, while their buyers still sat at their tables.
The number 30 with a yellow mask had bought the scared deer hybrid, number 19 with a purple mask bought a dog hybrid, number 2 in white currently grinned mischievously as he battled for the buy with number 82 with a red mask.
Your eyes flitted around the room. You could have facepalmed yourself upon realising all those numbers had the same kind of mask just in varying colours. You saw someone in a sky blue mask with the number 67, number 16 with a golden mask, also a black mask with the number 39, number 9 in orange and number 11 in blue.
The last one you saw was a man with a pink mask, holding the 22 as their number card. To your surprise he already stared at you, not even interested in the auction of the other hybrids.
You tilted your head, feeling some sort of pull towards him, as if you should be knowing him.
“The tiger goes to number 82!” The auctioneer cheered, catching your attention again.
You looked at Chan-hee, who barely contained the grin on his face as he got pulled to his new owner. As the next auction began, you decided to focus on Chan-hee and the buyer instead. You narrowed your eyes, seeing how he patted Chan-hee’s shoulder almost like an older brother, hugging him shortly. You also noticed how relaxed Chan-hee appeared and it slowly dawned on you.
“TBZ”, you mumbled, eyes immediately jumping back to the man with the pink mask. Your heartbeat quickened as you realised that all hybrids had been bought by these people so far and you slowly started to wonder who they were.
“It’s finally time for the highlight of the night”, the auctioneer announced and your cage moved again towards the middle of the stage. He repeated your details once more, remembering everyone how rare and valuable you actually were.
The man with the pink mask pushed himself away from the wall he had been leaning against the whole time, moving to the front. Others followed him, wanting a good look at you.
You barely acknowledged the presence of the others, completely transfixed on him. He tapped his chin with his number card as if he was thinking about something but the simple movement let his sweet honey scent waft over to you.
A knowing smirk pulled at the corner of his lips when your eyes widened in realisation.
Your mind reeled, questions tumbled over one another as you stared at Eric. Why was he here? Was he part of that group Chan-hee mentioned? Who were they? Were all of them hybrids? Why would they bid on other hybrids? What was their goal? Were they the reason for all the hybrid abductions or are they a whole different group to deal with? What if they were part of this smuggling ring and this whole auction was just a farce. What if this was a setup for the police?
Your attention drifted from Eric as your eyes searched the large crowd. The commander had ordered several masks and showed them to you, so you would recognise your colleagues even in the crowd.
You noticed some of them, seeing how they chatted with other buyers and barely paid you any attention.
For a second you were relieved to see your colleagues but something didn’t sit right with you. A bad feeling gnawed at your insides, a thought you couldn’t fathom just yet emerging from the back of your mind.
“50.000!”
Your attention got pulled back to Eric, who just yelled an incredibly large sum and raised his number card. You blinked several times, wondering for a split second if he actually got that much.
“60.000!”
You tensed, hearing the voice of Delta ring through the audience. You glanced at the auctioneer, who only raised an eyebrow questioningly but shrugged it off quickly to entertain the crowd.
You looked at your colleagues, confused why they weren’t bidding for you. Sure, 60.000 was quite a lot but there were undercover missions that were way more expensive.
“70.000!”
Eric yelled again, his jaw tense as he glared towards Delta.
“80.000.”
You looked at the man, seeing a lazy grin on his lips. He wasn’t concerned in the least, as if he was certain he’d win this battle.
“One million!”
Once again you checked for your colleagues and your mind raced all over again. Why wouldn’t they be bidding for you? Was there an order they followed that you hadn’t received yet? You tried to reason, mulling over every possibility there was. You glanced towards Delta. What if the commander hoped Delta would bring you to the head of this organisation?
In that case Eric would ruin the plan if he won the auction. You looked at Eric with worry in your eyes, seeing how determined he was to buy you.
“Five million”, Delta said, rolling his shoulders and twisting his neck. “I can do this the whole night, boy. Give up now before you seem too desperate.”
“Ten million.” He hissed through gritted teeth. Fear pooled in Eric’s eyes, seeing how Delta didn’t even flinch at that offer. He turned to look at you and you saw how he desperately tried to come up with something.
“I’ll be fine”, you mouthed at him, trusting the police had a superior plan in mind.
“Fifty million.” Delta waited a second before he called out again. “Wait, let me double that offer, one hundred million.” He leaned forward, silently challenging Eric to make a better offer.
Eric visibly deflated, shaking his head in defeat.
The voice of the auctioneer rang in your ears like a gunshot, telling the crowd Delta won and bought you for one hundred million.
You wished you could have talked to Eric for a moment but your cage got pulled behind the stage again. The curtain closed before your eyes, drowning you in darkness again.
When they opened for a split second and light pooled over your cage, your heart jumped with hope Eric had decided to barge through. Though your hope immediately got crushed when you realised it was Delta, who walked towards you now.
He threw that same collar at you and waited for you to put it on. “Did you hope that loser in pink would buy you?” He sneered as he pulled you out of the cage. “That guy never stood a chance. I told you we would see more of each other. After all, I still have to break you, darling. And until then you’re my little play toy.”
You silently followed him for the sake of the mission, even when everything inside of you screamed at you to run away.
The second you stepped into his car everything became a blur of pain and suffering. Every waking moment you had was filled with Delta ‘playing’ with you.
His interpretation of playing was torture. Some days he chained you against a wall, others he hung you head down for hours. One time he wrapped a plastic bag over your head and gave you a tube to breathe through, before he buried you naked in his garden - cutting off the air supply whenever it pleased him.
The first few days you still had hope nestling inside of you - hope, he would lead you to alpha; hope, the commander or a group of detectives would raid this place and save you. But with each passing hour where nothing happened that hope dwindled like the flame of a candle becoming smaller and smaller as it neared its end.
Delta tried to hurt you as much as possible without killing you, wishing for you to finally scream in agony. He got increasingly frustrated with your lack of reactions, not knowing you had lived through torture once.
He scoffed and shoved your naked body away, watching you stumble backwards until you fell down. Delta stared at you silently before he stood up and flipped the cigarette he had used to burn you into the tiled room and moved to the door. “Alpha told me you were a tough one”, he told you casually, “but I already know how to break you.”
You didn’t even manage to lift your head, simply watching him with your eyes as he walked further away.
“You scream the loudest when I hurt someone else.”
Your heart dropped into your stomach and your eyes widened in panic.
“THAT’S WHAT I WANT TO SEE”, Delta cheered loudly, clapping his hands as he saw the mortified expression on your face. He grabbed his phone and called someone. “Foxtrot, bring the mouse hybrid.”
“No”, you exhaled in a weak attempt to stop him but it was too late already.
Minutes later the door opened again and a woman brought a tiny girl into the room, shoving her inside before she left again without saying a word.
The mouse hybrid trembled like a leaf in the wind, nervously looking around until her eyes landed on Delta and your bruised form on the ground.
In an instant Delta shot up and crossed the room with a few steps. He grabbed the mouse hybrid by the throat and lifted her into the air. “The only way you’ll survive is when that abomination over there complies.”
“Let her go”, you croaked out. You tried pushing yourself up but your arms buckled underneath your weight and you dropped back to the ground.
“What was that?” Delta mocked you, knowing full well you wouldn’t be able to speak louder than that since he barely gave you enough liquid to survive.
“Please”, you whispered, tears pricking at the corners of your eyes as you watched the mouse hybrid struggle in his hold, clawing at his grip and silently begging for air. “Please, I’ll do anything. Just let her go.”
Delta huffed in annoyance. “I already took everything you had to offer. Everything except your agonised screams. You know what I want.”
“Please beat me, please. I promise I will scream.” By now you started sobbing. You weakly pulled yourself across the tiled floor, trying to get closer to Delta. When you reached him the mouse hybrid already stopped moving in his hold. You clawed at his pants, begging him to release the girl before it was too late.
With another huff he let go and the mouse hybrid dropped to the floor. She turned to her side and started coughing violently.
Again you tried pushing yourself up, succeeding this time. You gently rubbed the back of the girl, pulling her into a reassuring embrace when she calmed down enough. You cupped her cheeks, whispering to her that you would do everything to protect her.
She smiled at you weakly, nodding and blinking away her tears while you pushed strands of her grey hair out of her face.
Suddenly Delta cupped your hands and snapped her neck. “Her death is on you.”
You saw the light die in her eyes right before she lifelessly dropped to the ground.
You screamed.
You cried.
You tried pulling her back into your arms with trembling fingers, screaming even more when she didn’t move or react to anything you did.
Delta just stood in front of you, his expression showing you he just experienced complete and pure bliss.
“You monster”, you screamed at him, rocking the dead body like a mother would with her child. You sobbed as you caressed her face, silently asking her to forgive you.
You barely acknowledged Delta’s presence and became quieter and quieter. You gave him what he wanted and for nothing, you weren’t able to save that girl.
Delta stepped closer and ripped her body out of your hold, before he kicked you in the stomach - propelling you backwards until you slammed against the wall behind you.
You couldn’t even recover from the blow. Delta immediately got to you and chained you to the wall. “Don’t even think we’re done here.” With that he stepped back and towards the corpse of the mouse hybrid.
You stared at him with horror, already shaking your head because you didn’t want to believe it. “No”, you breathed out, “you wouldn’t.” You didn’t even hear your own cries and screams as you watched him defile the corpse. You pulled at your restraints, ignoring how the shackles cut into your wrists and drew blood already.
“You bastard! Monster! Let go of her! I will kill you!”
As your last curse escaped your lips the door got kicked in and several men in colourful masks filed into the room.
The one with the red mask knocked out Delta and watched him drop to the ground. Another with a golden mask checked the pulse of the mouse hybrid and sadly shook his head.
Only after the pink mask came into the room and rushed straight towards you, did you recognise it was the same group from the auction.
Eric unchained you and immediately caught your body as you simply slumped down. “Shit”, he cursed and quickly pulled you against his chest. He grabbed his jacket and wrapped it around you. “I’m sorry it took me so long.”
You inhaled deeply, your eyes fluttering shut as his sweet honey scent engulfed you. “It wasn’t your fault”, you whispered weakly.
“Let us get out of here.”
You nodded and got on your feet with his help, slowly walking through the room. You stopped when you reached the mouse hybrid and Delta’s unconscious body. You gently tucked on Eric’s shirt. “We need to take them with us.”
The men looked at each other, sharing a silent conversation that you didn’t understand. Only after the one with the red mask sighed and motioned for his comrades to grab these two, did they gather around them.
“Be careful with her”, you asked them before you turned your eyes to Delta. “And just make sure he survives.”
They grinned, some even snickered at your statement.
You watched how they gently picked up the girl and carried her outside, while two of them each grabbed an arm of Delta and pulled him along, uncaring how he bumped against steps and corners.
You turned to look at Eric. The energy keeping you up slowly died down and you noticed how the edges of your vision darkened. You wanted to warn Eric but all you could manage was a softly whispered ‘sorry’ before you passed out.
When you woke up again you found yourself in a soft bed. You didn’t know how much time passed while you were unconscious but it definitely wasn’t enough since the dull throbbing of pain radiated from each corner of your body.
“You shouldn’t move too much just yet”, the voice of Eric interrupted your thoughts. He walked into the room with a small tray in one of his hands, closing the door quietly behind him. “I’m glad to see you’re awake again.”
“Are you sure? This feels like a dream, seeing you serving me.”
Eric snickered and shook his head. “Good to see nothing has changed either.”
You made a grimace at the thought of what had happened. “On the contrary. Everything has changed”, you mumbled and sat up on the bed, leaning against the headrest. “How long was I out?” You looked around, trying to find a clue of what time or date it was.
Though the room was barely decorated and definitely didn’t have a clock hanging around. Additionally with the drawn curtains you only assumed it was daytime, not knowing for certain.
“A few days”, Eric told you and sat the tray with food on your lap before he sat down on the edge of the bed. “You sustained a lot of wounds, most of them only healed superficially.”
You hummed and nodded in agreement, sensing the throbbing within your body.
“Q said to give you a few more days and then the pain should be gone.” Eric looked at you, his eyes holding a sadness and pain you couldn’t fathom. “I’m sorry I wasn’t able to protect you.”
This time you shook your head, leaning forward despite the pain increasing, and patted his hand softly. “It wasn’t your fault. I had a mission to fulfil.”
Eric winced at your words. “No mission should require for you to live through torture”, he growled and pulled away from you, standing up and marching from one side of the room to the other and back again. “You could have died in the hand of that monster.”
You bit on your lower lip, secretly knowing he was right but you still didn’t want to admit it to yourself. You grabbed the tray and placed it next to you, slowly getting up and walking over to Eric.
He stopped his pacing, his hand shooting forward to stabilise you and hold you. His eyes roamed over your face, while a storm of emotions and questions plagued his features. “How can you be so calm about this?”
You shrugged with your shoulders. “Not my first rodeo.”
Eric closed his eyes, his face twisting in pain. He gently pulled you even closer to him, engulfing you in a tight hug.
For a moment you didn’t know what to do, but his sweet scent wrapped around you like a warm blanket and you melted into his touch. You hugged him back, having your arms wrapped around his hips and leaning your face against his collarbone.
At that moment the door opened and you saw Chan-hee walk into the room with another guy. “Oh, did the badger finally find his honey?” He teased, snickering with Chan-hee at his joke.
“My honey?” Eric questioned with knitted eyebrows. He looked from his friends to you and back again, before the realisation dawned on him and he desperately tried to hide his blushing.
You stepped away from Eric, surprised to see Chan-hee again.
“Good to see you again, kid.”
You huffed but smiled nonetheless. “What are you even doing here?” You walked over to him and hugged him shortly, thankful he seemed alright.
“Like I told you. TBZ.”
“Technically you only said their name and nothing else”, you countered with a roll of your eyes. “So would anyone be kind enough to enlighten me? The police force has no record about a group called TBZ.”
“I’m not surprised you didn’t get the records about us, Detective Lin”, Eric half teased and half grunted. “As a hybrid you would have been a danger for their mission to eradicate us.”
You frowned at him and then looked at the other two men, hoping to receive an answer to all your questions.
Eric gently grabbed your elbow and guided you back to the bed, motioning for you to sit down and eat while they would explain all they could to you.
“TBZ is a group of hybrids, fighting for the safety of other hybrids. We started this when we noticed the officials and the police barely did anything against the discrimination we received”, Eric told you with a solemn expression.
“We try to stay under the radar of the police but they have connections everywhere”, the man, whose name you didn’t get explained.
“Even in the smuggling ring.”
You turned to Chan-hee, looking at him for a moment as if you wanted to argue with him but scenes of the auction resurfaced in your mind and you decided to keep silent for now.
“We fight to get all hybrids from the smuggling ring before they leave town and transport them to safety. There are hybrid communities all across the globe and more and more hybrids and sometimes even humans joined our cause. Still, there are too many we cannot save.”
All of you looked down at the blanket, possibly remembering the faces of all the victims you had lost.
“Right now our biggest enemy and issue are the police.”
“But why?” You frowned, shaking your head softly. “We have a special unit that’s solely tasked to track down the smuggling ring and prevent more hybrid abductions.”
“And yet there was an increase in abductions”, Eric growled, looking away from you.
“Up until Eric showed up, how successful were you with your unit?” Chan-hee asked you with a raised eyebrow.
You blinked several times, recalling all the months you had been on that task force. Either the leads were flukes or your unit arrived too late at the scene. You grimaced at the realisation. “Not really good.”
The silence following your words was almost deafening. You knew their trust towards the police or the government couldn’t be restored like that anymore. Not until the last rotten egg was discovered and dealt with.
After you ate the food Eric had brought you, the men left the room again, telling you to rest some more.
You hadn’t even noticed how exhausted you were from this minimal interaction, though you knew most of your energy was used to heal your wounds.
Even with your hybrid genes it took a few more days before you were able to move around without feeling any sort of pain. Once Eric gave his okay as well, not wanting to put any sort of strain on you, you were allowed to do smaller tasks around the house again.
Though you didn’t really care about the opportunity to work out again. You wanted to do something else entirely.
So when you sat down with all the men, you immediately blurted out your request: “I want to interrogate Delta.”
All of them stared at you like you grew a second head. Before you could even explain yourself they started discussing the topic with each other, saying pros and cons as if you weren’t sitting right next to them.
“Not on your own. One of us has to be with you. For safety reasons.”
You turned to look at Eric, silently asking him if he would accompany you. While you got to know all the other men, you still felt the most comfortable with him.
“I’ll bring you there tomorrow morning”, he promised, ending the discussion at that point.
Though when he accompanied you to your room, Eric was far from convinced. “Are you sure you want to do this?” He asked and closed the door of the room behind the both of you.
“He knows who the head of the smuggling ring is. I need to find that person.” ‘And make them pay.’ The last part you only thought, unsure whether Eric or the others condoned revenge.
“Then let me do the interrogation. You don’t need to see that scumbag ever again.” Eric walked over to you, pulling you into his embrace from behind. He leaned his chin on your shoulder, gently nosing along your neck and jawline.
You slightly turned to look at his face with straight lips. “Don’t tell me you haven’t tried before.”
Eric chuckled softly and hugged you even tighter. “Fine, we did try and he wouldn’t talk at all.”
Now you turned completely and wrapped your arms around his neck, giving him a soft peck on the cheek. “I know how to break him, please don’t worry about me.”
“You know I can’t help but worry about you, honey.” Eric gently pushed you towards the bed, grinning when both of you fell on the mattress. “I just don’t want you to get hurt.”
You hummed softly, stroking his hair while he laid on top of you with his head resting on your chest. “What if I have to hurt that man to get the information I want?”
Eric contemplated your question for a moment, before he shrugged with his shoulders. “He had it coming then.”
“And you won’t think differently of me? No matter what I’ll do tomorrow?”
This time Eric pushed himself up to look at you, tilting his head with a frown on his face. “While I think I know what you’re capable of, I feel like I shouldn’t ask what you’re planning to do tomorrow.”
You turned your head away, not wanting to meet his eyes. “I’m not really planning anything”, you mumbled with a small pout on your lips, “it’s just that I learned a lot of ways to extract information the hard way.”
Eric gently grabbed your chin and made you look at him again. His eyes were so soft and you could have sworn his gaze alone turned you into a puddle. “No matter what you’ll be doing tomorrow, I’ll have your back. I’ll still call you honey and still hold you in my arms at night.”
You mouthed your thanks and leaned upwards, pecking his lips before dropping back on the mattress.
“That’s all I get?” Eric asked in mock offense, falling back on top of you. He grinned brightly when you started to laugh and tried pushing him off of you. Playing along, he grabbed your side and turned both of you around, so you straddled him now.
You raised an eyebrow teasingly, trying hard not to grin. Before you failed, you quickly leaned down and captured his lips in a kiss.
Soon enough one kiss turned into several and the kissing turned into making out. His hands roamed over your sides and yours over his chest. Both of you tucked at the clothes, pulling them off between kissing and throwing them somewhere into the room.
You spent the whole night together, connecting with one another even more intimately.
You had needed a night like that, needed Eric as your life buoy preventing you from drowning in the darkness that surely spread inside of you.
When the next morning came, you momentarily wished to turn back the time not wanting to leave his arms just yet. Not wanting to become the monster for the sake of getting the information you needed.
Yet, you still got up and Eric silently followed you, sensing your inner turmoil but giving you the space to deal with it the way you wanted to.
He drove you to an abandoned house a few miles outside of the town. Eric guided you inside and into the basement, where Delta sat on the ground - chained to the wall he leaned against.
“What a surprise to see you, darling.”
Eric growled at him, already getting into a stance to attack him.
You on the other hand kept your expression passive. With a simple hand gesture you calmed Eric down as well. “I need a chair and a desk”, you quietly told him, waiting for him to nod and search for the furniture.
For a few moments you had Delta for yourself, staring at him with a cold distance in your eyes. “You know there are two reasons for someone to use torture”, you told him, your voice void of any emotion, “one is to extract information and the other is simply for joy.”
“Why are you telling me this?” He spat, getting restless and tugging at the chains that held him.
“I mainly want one information from you. But believe me when I tell you I will torture you for my own twisted entertainment and nothing more.”
“You think I’d give you any information without torture?”
You didn’t answer him, hearing how Eric came back with a round wooden table and a folding chair on top of it. He placed the things in the middle of the room and looked at you expectantly.
“Could you put him on the seat while I get a few things?”
This time you didn’t even wait for Eric to answer you, walking out of the basement room and to the old kitchen. You heard how Delta fought and screamed but with his weakened state he had no chance against a hybrid - and definitely not against a honey badger hybrid. Though you paid them no mind, collecting what you deemed helpful in your cause: a few rusty knives, a lighter and matches, old cigarettes, a candle, some towels and a jug of water.
When you got back to the basement, Delta begrudgingly sat on the folding chair. His chained hands rested on the table in front of him, while another chain was wrapped around his torso, ankles and chair.
You placed the items on the surface of the desk in a calm manner, not saying a word as you did.
Eric stepped back to one wall, giving you the room you needed.
After everything was placed down, you sat on the edge of the table and grabbed one of the knives. You twirled it between your fingers a few times and then grabbed one of Delta’s hands.
“You know, my species is hunted for their plates. Yet they are nothing more than hardened hair. Just like fingernails.” You looked up, passively staring at Delta’s confused expression. “Do you know how they extract those plates?”
When he shook his head no, you slammed the knife right underneath the fingernail of his pinky, twisting it and therefore dislocating the nail until it dropped to the ground.
Delta screamed in pain, trying to pull his hand away from you but your grip with your own claws prevented him from even moving a bit.
You repeated the action on two more fingers, watching him writhe in pain with an almost bored expression.
“I can’t believe it was that easy to make you scream”, you taunted him as you let go of his hand.
“I wasn’t that brutal towards you”, Delta exclaimed in anger.
“No”, you shook your head, “you were worse.” You grabbed the lighter and the cigarettes, lighting one and pressing it down on random spots of his body - no matter whether it was covered with clothes or not.
After the sixth mark, Delta cried out: “What do you even want to know? You haven’t even told me what information you need from me!”
You hopped onto the table and crossed one leg over the other, tilting your head as you watched the mess in front of you. You still held the cigarette between two fingers, silently contemplating to just continue and ignore his outburst. Yet, you flipped the cigarette away and placed both hands on the table, leaning back on them a little. “And I told you, I’ll only torture you for my own twisted entertainment.”
You grabbed the matches and lit one of them, staring at the dancing flame in front of you. “Did you know that burning human flesh technically smells like any other burnt flesh? The only reason humans find it repulsive is the fact they know it is human flesh.” With that you moved your hand with the burning match to the hem of his shirt.
Delta tried leaning away from you again, but it was too late and the fabric already caught on fire.
You dropped the match to the concrete floor and calmly grabbed a towel to drench it with water, while more and more of Delta’s shirt started burning.
He screamed in agony, pleading with you to put out the fire.
You placed the towel over the flames before they reached his shoulder, making him cry out in pain yet again from the rapid change between heat and cold.
When he had calmed down again, you lit another match. You barely contained the wicked smile on your lips as you watched the dancing flame and the writhing body of Delta.
This time though you didn’t set him on fire but simply lit the candle on the table. Again, you threw the match to the floor, gently pushing the candle towards Delta.
“Tell me, who is the person behind the title Alpha.”
Delta trembled on his seat, tears streaming down his face. “I don’t know. I’ve never seen him.”
You hummed, staring at the flame of the candle, seeing how more and more wax turned into liquid. “I don’t believe you.”
“NO!” Delta tried freeing himself again. “I’m telling the truth. I’ve never seen him!”
“Yet you said to me Alpha told you I was a feisty one. How can you not know someone when you spoke with them?” You jumped from the table, grabbed the candle with one hand and the hair on his neck with the other, pulling his head back so he was forced to stare at the ceiling.
“It was a phone call. All our interactions were only via phone calls!”
You looked up at Eric, seeing his face seemingly sculpted out of stone. “Do you have his phone?” While you asked him you tilted your hand with the candle, letting the molten wax drop into Delta’s right eye. You ignored his struggling and cries of pain, waiting for Eric’s answer calmly.
Eric nodded and walked to a shelf on the other side of the room, pulling a phone from it. “We turned it off before we brought him here so we couldn’t get tracked.”
You thanked him softly and turned your attention back to Delta. “Is Alpha’s contact saved on your phone?”
“Yes, yes, yes, it is. Please, please let me go. Please show mercy.”
You let go of Delta and placed the candle back on the table, instead you grabbed a larger knife. “No.” With that you turned around and slammed it into his throat.
Delta’s eyes widened as he made gurgling sounds and blood started pouring out of the wound and his mouth.
“He hasn’t told you who the head of the organisation is”, Eric stated, a hint of confusion in his voice.
You looked at him, tears brimming at the corners of your eyes as your lips formed a pathetic version of a smile. “I never needed him to tell me.”
Eric immediately crossed the distance between you two and pulled you into his arms, shushing you and rubbing your back in an attempt to calm you.
You let him hold you until you heard Delta’s last heartbeat. Then you stepped away from Eric and grabbed the phone he had placed on the table. You turned it back on and unlocked it with Delta’s still warm fingerprint. Within seconds you found the contact name Alpha.
With one last shared look with Eric, you pressed the call button and put it on speaker. It rang a few times, before someone picked up.
“Yes?”
“Commander, I secured one of the men belonging to the smuggling ring.”
“Detective Lin? You made it out alive! I’m so glad! Where are you? I will come and get you.”
You motioned for Eric to write down the address, telling the location to the commander, who promised to be there as soon as possible and asked you to stay put.
When the call got cut, you dropped the phone to the ground. You looked at Eric, stepping towards him and cupping his cheek with one hand. You leaned forward and placed a soft kiss on his lips. “This is going to be ugly. More than what you’ve already seen.”
He leaned his forehead against your, cupping your face with his hands. “I’ll be by your side the whole time.”
You exhaled shakily, a soft smile playing over your lips. “Let us cut off the electricity. The only source of light should be that candle.”
Eric nodded and was about to go, when he stopped and kissed you more passionately this time. “You’re saving a lot of hybrids this way.”
“I know.”
You watched him leave and retreated to a corner of the basement, hiding in the shadow. Eric would join you soon, so you could wait for the commander to arrive.
“I’m ready to become the monster”, you whispered and closed your eyes, knowing there was no going back from the path you had chosen the second you had called the Alpha.
