Cary Grant lisant "Mr Blandings builds his dream house", le roman d'Eric Hodgins, qui deviendra un film réalisé par H. C. Potter en 1948 (titré "Un million clé en main" dans sa version française) dans lequel bien évidemment l'acteur tiendra le premier rôle en compagnie de Myrna Loy.
L’auteur a écrit ce roman à partir de sa propre expérience et des problèmes inimaginables qu'il a rencontrés lors de la construction de sa propre maison dans le Connecticut. La version originale du roman - qui tient Cary Grant - était illustrée par William Steig.

Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House was written by Eric Hodgins and was published in 1946. This comic novel follows a man and his wife as they attempt to build their dream house. They run into all sorts of unforeseen circumstances and it ends up costing them much more than they thought it would!
Did I Like It?:
I picked this book up because I like the film that was based on this book starring Cary Grant and Myrna Loy. The movie is a cute and funny old black and white. The story in the book however had a different tone. I know it was supposed to be funny, but I really didn’t find it to be so. I found it rather stressful and a bit monotonous in fact. The charm of the movie was not in the book I’m afraid. Not a statement I like making. What I got out of this book is that building a house is infinitely more complicated than I realized! It seems like you can sure get into some difficult scenarios. If in future I find myself in that situation I shall remember the warnings of this book. Besides the story, the characters were flat I’m afraid to say. I’m glad this book exists because it was turned into a cute movie, but I would have been ok if I had never picked this up to be honest.
Do I Recommend It?:
Nah, give this one a pass. If you like old movies though, go watch the movie of the same name, you’ll enjoy that much more.
