“There’s something calming about it. I recommend it.”
- Matt Duffer, regarding the unexplained plant creature that hosts Mike for unknown reasons
“What is it like to see these monsters come to life?”
Oh my gosh, it’s real. It’s so surreal to go from something we talk about, you know, and we start to conceptualise and we start to draw and illustrate and now seeing it where it’s tangible and you can play with it, it makes me feel like a kid.
- Eric Robles
Something something D&D campaign/imagination-inspired Tales From ‘85. Something something “we freeze time”…
(Interview from late April!)
Alright, Negative Nancys, listen up! I'm gonna be spreading some goddamn positivity in the Tales from '85 tag for once. (Holy moly, you whiners are relentless, btw, and like ignorant. You peeps really know nothing about animation, huh??)
So, I just saw an article about Eric Robles, the showrunner of the new spin-off series.
Which you can find here.
https://www.animationmagazine.net/2026/03/stranger-things-tales-from-85-showrunner-eric-robles-previews-netflixs-animated-return-to-hawkins/
And I recommend taking a look. Here are some quotes that have me curious and excited about the new series.
One thing to note is that the project actually has a longer development phase than I thought. "The project came about when he was taking a much-needed break in 2019." This doesn't mean they were actually working on the series at the time, but I do wonder how much the last two seasons influence the show if this idea was pitched to him in 2019.
So, originally, Eric Robles was going to make his return with his own horror idea. Honestly, I am kind of bummed we didn't get his original piece, BUT I'm glad Netflix decided to have him take over the '85 project. Because whatever Eric Robles' pitch to Netflix must've been aligned with what they wanted from the spin-off series. And I trust this man's creative vision. Like, the dude has 25 years of experience in the animated business. It's a good call to have him run the show.
Oh wow, look at that, the plot hole everyone keeps bitching about...
Oh wow! Looks like he took the assignment seriously and worked to find a creative solution to the problem by researching and consuming media from the era that inspired Stranger Things. Snark aside, I think it's pretty interesting to have Re-Animator inspire the show.

If you don't know the movie, check out the kill count. It does a pretty good job of summarizing, along with some production facts.
Look consultants! I think an interesting thing to note is that Eric Robles doesn't say he consulted the Duffers specifically on the writing. (Which is good, lmao) But I love that the advice he got was to make the monster of the week feel organic.
"Everything needs to have a reason to appear in the world, and they need to be legitimately from the Upside Down."
This makes me so curious what the rules are going to be established in this new series.
On to the art! You dweebs! Looks like Ian Graham plays a part in the production! Look, look, I know Tumblr loves Avatar: The Last Airbender. So preproduction was done in LA, run by the guy who directed The Last Airbender and Korra. Okay, now we're cooking here.
Alright, onto the art style. Now I've seen a ton of negativity about the show's art style, and all I want to say is, do you sincerely think Meybis is a bad artist???
Cause if you say yes. Then you're just full of shit. Sorry, not sorry. I sincerely urge you to take a look at her Instagram, cause her art is actually pretty freaking good.

And the last quote to note here is that I really believe this project is run by people who care about Stranger Things. Fans like you and me. He says he was able to play in their sandbox. Which gives me hope that they were given a lot of creative freedom to craft the story with care.
Who knows if it's actually good? But goddamn, I'm going to give a show a chance before I condemn it. And it sounds like season 2 already got greenlit (Which means they probably worked on two seasons at the same time and it was always going to air. That's how animation works, you dingbats, Velma on Max did the same thing. It's ALREADY been made.)
What's actually going to determine whether this show gets a season 3, though, is whether the toys sell. Viewership actually doesn't matter in this if kids end up buying the toys. Which seems to be the goal after realizing they have a toy line, lol.
NEW VIDEO. With the show that has been so pivotal to my online identity being five years old, and with me gaining so much perspective in that time, I figured it would be fun to analyze how well the show holds after all its time and why it struck a distinct chord with me. And you may also find some surprise discoveries from what was to come...
