so, the off-broadway production in comparison to the film gave me some thoughts so I'll dump here (pls keep in mind that I only listened to the stage-show as I am yet to find a bootleg so opinions might not be 100% accurate)
- I'm glad they cast Haley Bennett instead of Jasmine Cephas Jones as Roxanne. I don't think Jasmine's voice suited the role at all. She has a great voice but it sounded too jazzy and poppy in my opinion
- the stageshow is a lot more comedic? Like the entire first act feels more like a comedy than a drama while the movie has a more bittersweet feel from the start. The movie has its little laughs but in the show the characters sometimes feel a bit dumbed down (especially Roxanne and Christian). I feel like that kind of clashed with the tone of the music and characterization. Also, writing wise I preferred the first Act in the film
- I think the 2nd act is better in the play though. It's a lot more detailed and they included scenes that they left out in the film. Scenes that in my opinion are quite important to make the story seem less forced and more natural
- De Guiche is a better villain in the play (played by Ritchie Coster) although I'm not sure how much of that is due to acting. I think it's more the fact that he appears more in the play than in the movie
- Peter Dinklage is a god
