I Propose that Light and Space Artists’ Concerns are Taken Up Later By Other Artists:
LS was concerned with:
New medium of atmospheric installations that played with perception.
How science and spirituality could be construed by creating ‘objectless’ art.
Lack of boundary between viewer and the art.
Focus on direct experience, Zen versus intellectualism.
Illusion seeks to integrate mind and body.
Bell’s shaped canvas give illusion of constantly being in flux.
Bell’s art-making process lies in childhood fantasy.
Art without usefulness (tech)
Not concerned with colour but the perception of colour.
Irwin: Focussed on creating sptial vibe, rather than beauty.
Turrell: Art becomes part of a person’s experience, he “leaves” with art.
Turrell: “I want you to sense yourself sensing. To see yourself seeing. To be aware of how you are forming the reality you see.”
Turrell made Ganzfelds (Drake). These experiments confirmed Buddhist notion that intention and reason shape experience.
Irwin: “There is little place in our frame of reference for “not seeing.”
Turrell: Work was about making 3D space and making allusions to the space beyond that.
Light and space used as a material.
Turrell referred to his paintings as containing a conceptual 3D space, “Little holes of reality.”
“What does the mind do with the information from the senses? To what extent do we create the external world by the order we give it?”
Turrell: Light creates spiritual experience.
Orr: Simulated producing voids (Rafman, Ratte), uses light, ice, shadow and air and sound, concerned with ancient mysteries and primal materials, pull toward magic.
Irwin: Not what viewer sees, but how.-- Viewer then left with the sense of presence rather than the image.
Initially, these artists did not have a language to describe what they were creating.
Interested in innovation and art as inquiry.
Drew on: Abstract Expressionism, Suprematism, Luminism.
Similarities:
Playing with perception (All)
Lack of boundary between art and viewer (All)
Illusion integrates mind and body (Rafman)
Illusion of constantly being in flux, shaped canvas (Sassoon, what I saw at the fair)
Bell’s art-making process lies in childhood fantasy. (All)
Vibe, rather than beauty (Sassoon)
Turrell: Art becomes part of a person’s experience (Ratte)
Turrell: See yourself sensing, creating reality (Ratte)
Turrell: Paintings as concepts 3D space, “Little holes of reality” (Rafman paintings)
Orr: Simulated producing voids (Murata, Ratte, Sassoon)
Innovated and art as inquiry (Arcangel)
Drew on Abstract Expressionism (Arcangel), Suprematism and Luminism (Murata)
Differences:
How science and spirituality could be construed by creating ‘objectless’ art.
Focus on direct experience, Zen versus intellectualism.
Art without usefulness (tech)
Not concerned with colour but the perception of colour.
