You don't have to prove yourself to anyone.
He knew that, Levi was never one to care what other people thought of him, to prove himself to others because he knew there was no need. However recently he's felt like he needed to prove himself to Erwin, prove that he was still capable of fighting despite his injuries... no matter how many times the blond told him otherwise he just couldn't help but have that thought in his head.
" I know that....I was just saying that after my recovery is over I'll need to practice with the ODM gear." he lifted his right hand as if to gesture to his missing fingers " With some practice I should be good as new, as for my eye I can just adjust to accommodate the blind spot." at this point he was just pointing out his flaws but he wasn't looking for pity, he didn't want to be treated any differently and that's what scared him most.
The idea that the others would treat him differently, this was just his way of telling Erwin that he didn't need any special treatment and that he didn't have anything to worry about.
"Being stuck in this bed is beginning to get to me....I'd much rather start training tomorrow if you'd permit me. I know I'm not fully recovered and I'll be sure to take it slow....but I don't think I can spend another day in this bed."

Connie had come to visit the Commander while he recovered and every time he'd visit Erwin would be asleep....and understandably so considering how he was in a fucking coma for so long after picking a fight with Eren....and winning.
Honestly they owed this man so much, Connie wasn't even sure where to begin but didn't hesitate to move towards the bedside when the blond suddenly spoke.
" C-commander Erwin??? You're awake!?" he gasped, according to the doctor he wasn't expected to wake for another 3 weeks....this man certainly defied the laws of nature....why couldn't he do that?
" A-ah hold on!" Connie stumbled away from the bed to open the door to the room before shouting " Hey Commander Erwins awake!" within seconds footsteps could be heard rushing over, it was the 104....or what was left of them.
" Ah! Commander you're really awake..." Armin said a bit shocked, he knew that even Connie wouldn't joke about something like this so why was he so shocked by it?
" How are you feeling? You must be so dazed and confused..." Armin muttered a bit with a sigh before Jean walked over to glance down at Erwin " Captain Levi was worried about you, we all were sir. It was dangerous taking Eren on like that." he said as if to reprimand his superior....it wasn't intentional of course....
Mikasa stood in silence for a moment at the doors entrance before slowly making her way besides the others who crowded the Commanders bedside, she didn't hold any malice towards the man but it didn't stop her heart from aching " I'm glad you're awake sir..."

"Do you ever hate me for not allowing you to go back and save your squad, Levi?" He had made the best call he could, knowing full well that Levi's chances would have decreased without a full tank of gas. It was not an easy decision to make, but he he felt he had no choice but to pick. More deaths to add to his seemingly neverending list, and more things for him to mull over when the lights were out and he was within the warmth of his bed.
♞ -- The question was so out of the blue. That had happened some time ago and even at the time that thought had never blamed Erwin and he sure as hell didn't hate the man.
It was a decision that Erwin had to make. And if he had gone back to his squad there was every possibility that he'd have died to. And he was a life that could not yet be sacrificed.
Did he miss his team? Yes. But it was best not to have regrets about this sort of thing. It was best to keep moving forward as Erd and the others would have wanted.
"There is nothing in this world you could do that would make me hate you." It was as simple as that. "I understand why you did what you did. Not that it didn't hurt... but hate or anything close to that has never once been felt by me towards you."
