Netflix’s adaptation of author George Saunders’ 2010 dystopian short story “Escape from Spiderhead” makes for one oddly unsettling sci-fi thriller about altering human nature with a 1980s-inspired pop art meets yacht rock sheen. Starring Chris Hemsworth and Miles Teller as a pharmaceutical head and his prisoner test subject, we follow several experimental drug trials that manipulate inmates’ emotions and actions on a remote tropical penitentiary island.

Resembling a kind of cinematic thought experiment, Spiderhead never fully commits to any particular lane—whether it be a futuristic satire commenting on the current state of self-medication, a tight psychological thriller about the art of manipulation, or a philosophical human drama about abusive relationships. Its scattered pace drops us into an immaculately designed world without a clear or certain path and only vague questions. Still, Hemsworth's strangely offbeat performance keeps enough of the film a watchable experiment on screen.
